Republican Presidential Latino Strategy Raises Loose Nuts and Bolts Question. Again.

Oh, boy, another Republican presidential primary contest is heating up, and what can be more entertaining?

Today The New York Times tells me that, while Republicans in the Congress continue to paint the kids at the border as an invading horde of knife-wielding lepers, Republicans with presidential aspirations are maneuvering to win over Latino voters.

Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey will journey to Mexico next month to meet with the country's new president, court its corporate titans and mingle with its cultural leaders.

Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky is about to set off for Guatemala, where he will put his ophthalmology training to use by treating local patients with eye disorders.

And Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin is pleading with the government of Mexico to open a first-ever consulate in his state.

But the Times also reports that, "There are no plans for Mr. Christie to visit the United States' southern border with Mexico, where Central American children are now pouring into Texas."

Earlier this week I visited with Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins for a story I'm working on about the refugee children at the border. He described going there himself and finding siblings locked up in drunk tanks, separated by age and sex. He remembered in particular one very young child reaching through bars sobbing for an older sister who was across the way in another pod.

Jenkins, a Democrat, has been aggressively generous in his own proposals for dealing with the influx, volunteering to take on thousands of refugee children here in Dallas County until a sudden drop in border crossings made his offer unnecessary.

It seems to me we went through an only slightly dumber version of this same syndrome in the last presidential election, when a dozen or so reality-TV characters were running for the Republican nomination. They all wanted the cops to pull over and deport motorists who looked Latino, but then they also reached out to Latinos on the basis of family values and free enterprise.

I distinctly remember a conversation at a coffee shop in East Dallas where a Latino dude said to me, "I don't want to discuss family values with you if you're going to arrest my gramma."

And economic theories about free markets and regulation and all that stuff? That comes way after the chat about deporting people's grandmothers. C'mon. Isn't this pretty simple stuff?

If your version of family values includes pulling people over on the highway because they look like me ethnically, then basically I hate your guts. What is that you say? You and I might agree on basic market theory? Well that is kind of interesting, isn't it? But I still hate your guts, because you express a fundamental lack of decent human respect for me and everybody who looks like me, and basic human respect comes first, way first, way ahead of theories.

All this business about the border is so transparently about ethnicity and putting the shoe on the other foot. Get me some news footage of a bunch of white French or German kids in a drunk tank screaming through the bars for their siblings, and all these same Republicans would be rushing down there with Lady Bountiful baskets to rescue them.

OK fine, tell me I'm wrong, tell me I'm being unfair, it's all about law and order and the fact that we can't let them in because a lot of those kids might have cleft palates. Go ahead. And then, please, by all means, court the Latino vote by visiting with corporate titans and cultural leaders in Mexico City while you refuse to go look at the kids in the drunk tanks on the border. See how that works for you.

The Republican presidential candidates are in the same position this time they were in last time around. They want to hang on to their base among the haters while reaching out for votes among the hated. You know why that doesn't work? It's stupid. It's so stupid it makes you wonder if they've got loose nuts and bolts in their heads.

Their dilemma was captured in a popular song lyric a half century or so ago:

"Did you ever have to make up your mind? You pick up on one and leave the other behind. It's not often easy and not often kind. Did you ever have to make up your mind?"

Stupid mainstream Republicans. The same amount of effort needed to chase one Bud Light swillin' drywall crew member's vote would garner them a thousand white votes. If not more.

Schutze, you're mixing up 'conservatives' with 'Republicans' again.  Sometimes they're the same, most of the time they're not.

The two of the three candidates you mentioned are NOT conservatives.  I don't know what Rand Paul is (what day of the week is it, and whose favor is he currying?) but Christie is about as conservative as Harry Reid, GOP title or not.

Walker courting a consulate...I'd have to read a lot more to seeing how that equates with the moves the others are making.  I didn't even know Walker had made moves to run in 2016.

In the meantime, please keep telling yourself that everyone against illegal immigration is all about race. Please.  Ignorance is a tool only for one's enemy, and it's clear you're the enemy in this particular fight, so that works for people who agree with me.

If they were gay white French and German kids in the drunk tanks, I don't think you'd hear any complaints.

Fuck the republicans.

I once voted for them based on their once sensible economic platform.

But since all they do is preach hatred, and then abandon a sensible economic platform, that ain't gonna happen again.

A couple of years ago Alabama put in a very tough law requiring non-citizens to carry all sorts of documentation. One sheriff set up outside the Mercedes factory. After about the 3rd carload of German executives was pulled over, the pressure came down on him. "Not those non-citizens."

AS I recall, President Obama was urged by the Wendy Davis campaign and Rick Perry among others to go to the Texas border and observe the situation there, but he was pressed for time (attending a fundraiser?) and refused.  I am not sure why it would be important or helpful for Gov Christie to observe immigrants at the Texas border.  It just seems illogical.  As for Judge Jenkins,I wish that he spent as much time and effort with current issues facing the county rather than seemingly exploiting this situation for naught. Also--for the record French and German kids are very rude+ nasty  and I can't think of a better place for them then confinement--esp since their parents are so lenient and let them annoy any given stranger.

orly?  Show me three quotes where Republican nominee seekers actually said they wanted that, much less "all" of the "dozen or so."

Face it -- the only people talking about pulling over everyone who looks Mexican is liberals trying to burn conservative straw men.  Ron Paul, one of the dozen or so, specifically disavowed it and has the identical position Obama is taking now.  Mitt Romney, in the second debate, took the same position as Obama on the so-called DREAMers and resisted deporting minors.  Gingrich was flat out pro-amnesty.  Rick Perry said that anyone who wanted to deport minors didn't have a heart.

This isn't just sloppy writing -- this is shitty lying writing.  Spin is one thing -- this one is a flat out lie to move the story forward.  Shameful.

Laws selectively enforced based on ethnicity? No!

Republicans would be rushing down there with Lady Bountiful baskets to rescue them

Conservatives and republicans have been at the border for quite a while, helping, saving lives while risking theirs.

Then, we have lefty writers sitting in their air-conditioned offices, sipping lattes and reminding us that these people at the border feeding Latino babies actually hate Latino babies.

...sobbing for an older sister who was across the way in another pod.

Damn those republicans!

He's stuck in cartoon mode where everything is two-dimensional.  Easily digested.  Like saturday morning TV for kids.  In fact, that's what the DO is.

angst-driven pablum for the insincerely clever in what passes for - "food for thought".

sensible economic platform HA!  Your dispshits have blocked every effort to submit a budget for eight years now so they can ad hoc spend a TRILLION more a year than we collect in taxation, loading up the next twenty generations with grinding, oppressive debt, screaming racism all the way.

What you and Mr. Schutze have done to set back not only the races  but society itself is an abomination.

And this shit is about over with.

Then we'll see you find your inner Constitutional separation of powers again.

Why, no doubt Mr. Schutze will become a regular Constitutional scholar (ha!) while the adults pull the pick up out of the ditch.

and, of course, screaming racism all the way.

The standardized box packs indicate these guys are mules.

The initial bunch are camouflaged.  They are also sweeping the trail for some reason.

If we don't get control of this our Liberals are going to take one in the face.

I still cannot fathom why the President initiated this "surge"?  Why?  What is the point of this?

If the border is a membrane and one side has a lesser atmospheric pressure, it follows the flow will continue through a hole until the pressure is equal.

300 million on one side and 7 billion on the other.

It's not a surge,

You seem to forget the border is secure, it's the Red Line that's being unexpectedlycrossed, so really, it's a global problem to be addressed by the international community via the UN and Vladimir Putin. Obama's options are severely limited by the Constitution and the Tea Party.

"lying"??? just can't help yourself from being a complete dick, can you? just comes naturally, part of your DNA.

the sentence was about the advocacy to "deport", that would likely be done by various means including pulling them off the sidewalks, out of any public area and YES! when seen driving in their vehicles.

want to be anal about this eh? I'll challenge you to show any quotes by the candidates saying they wouldn't pull over latinos in order to enforce the stated desire to deport.....

ivyhall

@TheRuddSki Not that I know of.  I was referring to the response of some Baptist groups, who are down on the border helping the refugees/migrants.

@TheRuddSki

I honestly don't see what is the problem.  I have visited and driven in Europe several times.  I have to carry my International driver's license, my TXDL and my passport when I am driving.  If I didn't carry all of this, I could be detained as well.  I was only pulled over once in Britain, however the policeman was very kind and gave me instructions on some of the finer points of driving in Britain.

ivyhall
ivyhall

@TheRuddSki OK is it safe to assume-according to the Daily Beast- that undocumented German executives driving big Mercedes are being racially profiled by southern conservatives?  Lordy! how can the Republicans ever get the white European vote back? (LOL)

everlastingphelps
everlastingphelps topcommenter

@mavdog @everlastingphelps No, the sentence was about ALL  of the Republican candidates advocating pulling over ALL LATINOS in a racial profiling scheme.

So, once again, stop lying.  Everyone can go back and read the sentence and see what it said.

As far as quotes, I can do better -- Rubio introduced a bill to ban the very thing Jim says he wants:

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/apr/17/immigration-plan-bans-racial-profiling-federal-law/?page=1

But buried inside the 844-page Senate immigration bill is a section specifically prohibiting the use of race or ethnicity as a factor in “routine or spontaneous law enforcement decisions, such as ordinary traffic stops.”

I understand why you have to lie and make this about harassing Latino American citizens -- you've overwhelmingly lost the argument on giving Amnesty to illegals.  The American people are overwhelmingly against it.  So, you have to lie and make the argument about something that you could win, because you never had anyone advocating it in the first place.

having a problem understanding the written word are you? comprehension just not your best trait?

"They all wanted the cops to pull over and deport motorists who looked Latino"

wow! look at the word in bold, D E P O R T.

hmm, wonder, how do they go about that act?

as was pointed out above, it would include:

  • detaining pedestrians walking in public areas
  • detaining people inside buildings, and
  • detaining people driving their vehicles.

if you deny the above you are lying.

unless, of course, you can show where any of these candidates who advocated deportation specifically stated they would prohibit authorities from "detaining people driving their vehicles", AKA "pull over...motorists".

a bit odd that you would point to Rubio when Jim specifically mentioned "the last presidential election..TV characters" who were comepting "for the nomination" immediately prior to the sentence. see, that is who "they" are, not Rubio...

yeah, that comprehension thing....

@mavdog From your own copy and paste, and just to be dickish about things (personally I can't understand why either you or phelps are engaging in this argument, you both come off as kind of juvenile):

""They all wanted the cops to pull over and deport motorists who looked Latino"

wow! look at the word in bold, D E P O R T."

Wow.  Look at the word right after deport: motorists.  By definition a motorist is not: A) walking or B) inside a building.  Phelps' reading comprehension may be in question, your ability to communicate effectively isn't, at this point.

everlastingphelps
everlastingphelps topcommenter

@mavdog NOBODY WANTS TO PULL OVER ALL LATINOS.

That is what Jim accused us of.  Racism.  Because Jim has race on his mind all the time (which says more about him than the people he obsesses about.)

Don't accuse me and everyone on my side of being fucking racists and then try to lie your way out of it.  We see what you said.

ivyhall
ivyhall

@everlastingphelps @mavdog Well actually it IS a little  schizoid to expect one class of  immigrants to fill low wage potentially exploitative  heavy labor jobs, then not allow their kids access to the educational system or social support systems.  I would like the Republicans to come up with an actual plan rather than just pandering to the most conservative party elements. How hard can it be?  i think that it is more opportunistic than "racist" per se.  Racism being such an overused accusation these days.

mavdog

@everlastingphelps

cannot answer the question above can you?

here, I'll repeat it as your lack of reading comprehension resulted in your missing it:

wow! look at the word in bold, D E P O R T.

hmm, wonder, how do they go about that act?

let us know an answer to the question that does NOT include having "the cops to pull over and deport motorists who looked Latino".

we'll be waiting for your solution.

bwhahahaha!

everlastingphelps
everlastingphelps topcommenter

@ivyhall @everlastingphelps @mavdog There's no point in having a republican plan when the president won't even follow the law we already have.  The laws on the books are fine -- it's the lack of enforcement that is the problem.

everlastingphelps
everlastingphelps topcommenter

@mavdog @everlastingphelps The solution:  attrition.

The vast majority will deport themselves if no one hires illegals.  Put real penalties on businesses that hire illegals.  When the IRS finds someone operating a business off the books, check their status and deport the illegals.

When they get stopped for something legitimate and can't produce ID, figure out who they are, and if they are illegal, deport them.

0 isn't a realistic goal, whether we are talking about illegal immigration or murder -- but we don't stop catching murderers just because some of them get away.  Same with illegals.

Turn them back at the border.  Turn them back at the job site.  Turn them back at the police station.  That will be more than enough to end the problem.

@ivyhall @everlastingphelps @mavdog There's no point in passing new laws.  ICE has had to sue it's own White House to try to get Obama to let them do their jobs, but the courts threw them out:

http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/politics/2013/08/01/judge-dismisses-immigration-agents-lawsuit-against-obama-program-to-suspend/

It was a standing issue, so maybe Congress could sue him to get him to move.  Right now, new laws are useless.  He won't enforce what we already have, so he sure as hell won't enforce a new law.
