Former Texas GOP Chair: Homophobia, Not Oil and Low Taxes, Created the Texas Miracle

There are many plausible explanations for the so-called Texas Miracle, the state's decade-plus surge in economic and population growth. Job creators appreciate the low tax burden and light regulation. Workers like the low cost of living and lack of a state income tax. Heretofore unimagined quantities of oil and gas are being pumped out of the ground. Et cetera.

There's some truth in all of those things. But Cathie Adams, the president of the arch-conservative Texas Eagle Forum and one-time chair of the Texas Republican Party, has her own pet theory, which she advanced at an anti-gay marriage press conference last week covered by Right Wing Watch. What's really driving Texas' growth is its steadfast rejection of the "homosexual agenda."

"Texas is the fastest growing state in the nation, and there is a reason for that, and part of that reason is traditional marriage," she explains.

This [the state's gay-marriage ban] is good for Texas families. We do not accept the homosexual agenda, that is what we are talking about here. If those who embrace that homosexual agenda want to move to a state that does embrace homosexual marriage, there is a state of Massachusetts that they could move to. But we are finding is that they're not moving to Massachusetts, what is happening is that Massachusetts is declining in numbers, people are moving out of that state. So why in the world would Texas, that is growing and the fastest growing, want to join Massachusetts, that is declining? People are moving away, they are voting with their feet, out of Massachusetts.

Latin has a phrase for this: cum hoc ergo propter hoc, i.e. the fallacy of confusing correlation with causation. It's common enough, but Adams should be mindful that relying on a discredited rhetorical device can easily backfire.

Take the recent flood of Central American children across the Rio Grande. What if it's not the horrific violence in their home countries that's driving them here, or the whispered promises of asylum inspired, perhaps, by Obama's uncertain deportation policies? What if all those unaccompanied minors are simply yearning to live in a place where the constitution explicitly bans same-sex unions? There's just as much evidence to support this theory as there is to support Adams'.

As a gay man that just moved to Dallas from Palm Springs, CA a few months ago, I can say with 100% certainty that I did not move here because the state has "rejected the homosexual agenda"

Yes, the citizens of Texas are so opposed to all things homosexual that they elected a lesbian mayor of the state's largest city.  In our own fair county, we have elected a lesbian sheriff and a gay district clerk.  In our fairly sizable city we have been electing gay city council members for years.  Perhaps, just perhaps, the majority of the citizens of Texas are not so narrow-minded and hateful as some of our "leaders" would have us believe.  Watch out, Cathie, the arc of history is about to knock you into the dustbin of history.  Bless your heart.

while cum hoc ergo propter hoc is accurate, a better latin phrase would be "Praemitto vitiosa". That translates as "faulty premise".

(you know, I'd bet that Cathie Adams would strongly object to the use of ANY "Latin" phrase, cuz you know "Latins" aren't REAL Americans according to Cathie..)

The population of Massachusetts has INCREASED according to the Census Bureau, not "declining in numbers" as Cathie stated. 2.2% positive growth in Mass. pop from 2010 to 2013.

Not only is Cathie Adams ignorant in her statement that people are moving to Texas because they are fleeng "the homosexual agenda", she is so stupid that she didn't even take the time to check and verify the example she used to support her ridiculous comment to be correct.

stupid is as stupid does...

Women who join groups like The Eagle Forum are even more fascinating to me than gay men who join Republican’s or the Tea Party. It seems like blatant emotional S&M.

While after 35years no one has let me take a glance at the official Homosexual Agenda, I did (*by accident) receive a copy of part of the Eagle Forum agenda when it comes to how to be homophobic without appearing to be homophobic or as Colleen Hughes, President of the National Eagle forum says….. The issue has become such a tar baby, people don’t want to go anywhere near it, because the “homophobe” moniker is so dreaded and so liberally applied. It’s also very distracting, because the homosexual advocates are so strident and relentless in their attacks.

One of the ways this group has found so they can “tar baby” without being so blatant in wearing white sheets, is to use “horror stories” in order to illustrate that allowing homosexuals in the military is not simply a matter of respecting one person’s personal choice, but they actually threaten our national security and in some cases individual soldiers’ personal safety. I know the horror stories are very difficult to find as you explained. It sounded like you did have some that illustrate the very serious issues. She goes on to state how she first learned about telling “horror stories” by attending a Focus on the Family group meeting designed for such action. So this is nothing more that her own version of Texas Horror Stories.

Just a reminder that this is the woman who thinks Grover Norquist is a Muslim because he has a beard……Adams warned that although “oftentimes we like what he says about economic issues,” Norquist is in fact “Trouble with a capital T” and is “showing signs of converting to Islam himself.” Her evidence for Norquist’s secret conversion? “As you see, he has a beard.”

Cathie says …….And that the United Nations is leading us to “end times” which I never know it that is a good or bad thing. ….“The Bible tells us that in the end times there will be a world government headed by a world leader, called the anti-Christ, who will profess a world religion, but did you ever think you would live in the day when these things would come into being? That is exactly what the United Nations is doing behind the backs of most Americans.”

Pastor Charles Flowers, seen in this video, says that part of this Agenda I have never seen will “seek special rights and a protected opportunity to punish and persecute anyone not in agreement with their lifestyle choice.” And Steve Washburn of First Baptist Pflugerville, citing absolutely zero evidence, Washburn said that gay rights activists are trying to enact hate speech laws and throw pastors in jail. “If it becomes illegal for us to stand in our pulpit and preach pro-family issues, if that biblical language becomes hate speech, if we are facing imprisonment by speaking our religion which is defended by the First Amendment, we are going to see thousands and thousands of Bible-preaching pastors going to jail,” he said. “And I don’t think anyone wants to see that.”

And my favorite, as there is nothing like a Hettie scorned, (seen above) Anti-Gay Marriage Leader’s Ex-Wife Left Him For Another Woman Earlier today we reported that Jonathan Saenz of the anti-gay group Texas Values put together a press conference last week to attack gay rights as a push to snuff out freedom and imprison pastors. In fact, Saenz has been one of the most vocal opponents of LGBT rights laws, alleging that they “terrorize women and children” and pave the way for Christian concentration camps.

Cathie will be proud of the number of gay men/women I have who are ready to attend her Texas Pray the Gay Away Jamboree & Spa.While I have never seen any blueprint for the upcoming Christian Concentration Camp, I would be totally in for sending most Texas Pastors to Prison just for the amazing work they could do while there and I feel certain the guys would reciprocate.

*I had scheduled to interview the new President of The National Eagle Forum and when she sent a not to reschedule she sent me an attachment meant for on of her Eagle tar babies by mistake.http://www.queerty.com/eagle-forum-leader-refers-to-gay-rights-as-tar-baby-peddles-homo-horror-stories-to-further-cause-20080929

The "homosexual agenda," as I understand it, is to be afforded equal protection under the law.

When you consider how misogynistic Christianity, Judaism and Islam all are, you have to wonder about the psychological gymnastics required for women like Cathie to rationalize their personal politics.

Ummm, would you please explain "queer trans women" to me?

Are you a woman who used to be a dude that liked women and still like women or are you a dude that used to be a woman that liked women but now likes dudes?

I am really confused and would like to know.

@Montemalone.....M. ...A short, sweet, and disgustingly dated story just for you.  When I first moved to LA, my friend got a job working as assistant to Richard Deacon (Mel Cooley/Dick Van Dyke Show).  After the first week, he found out part of his job was to care for Deak's Dildos.  He assume it would mean just to file them away according to color and size.  Butt he was wrong and the job turned shitty fast.  He immediately quit, yet took that experience and became one of our nation's top journalist by the name of Sean Hannity.  And today, he basically does for Fox what he use to do for Deak.

Not really, but he did quite show biz and returned to Texas to be the Prez of a Bank.  Just a little Throwback Thursday for my main man M.

I guess another way to put it is:

Or did you keep your bits and just changed clothes?
