Dallas Is One of the World's Sleepiest Cities

Yes, yes we do.

Using data drawn from what is admittedly a self-selected sample -- users of their UP fitness tracker -- Jawbone, a company famous for its Bluetooth headsets and speakers, has compiled some interesting findings about sleep habits and walking patterns from around the world.

You should check out and play around with the charts yourself, but the gist of the data is this: Dallasites go to bed early, sleep a lot when they do and don't walk very much, even if they fancy their health enough to wear a fitness tracker.

Jawbone says there were "tens of thousands" of tracker users in every American city they looked at, and those in Dallas sleep on average 6 hours and 54 minutes per night and about 75 percent are asleep by midnight each weeknight. As you click through the data, you can see the sleep patterns change on weekends and holidays. On New Year's Eve, for example, only a quarter of the sample was asleep by 12 a.m. Melbourne, Australia, the measured city that sleeps the most, gets a mere four minutes more than Dallas at 6 hours 58 minutes.

Whatever might be tiring us out so much, it sure isn't walking. Dallasites in the study managed a mere 6,910 steps per day, over 22 percent less than Stockholm, the world's walkingest city, according to Jawbone. It seems likely that number was a bit deflated due to the cancellation of the 2013 Dallas Marathon. There was a big jump in activity during the Turkey Trot, so it seems that last year's early December ice storm cost the city a few steps.

One of the most delightful things about being retired is that you can take a lovely siesta whenever you want.  The cats love their naps, too.  Trouble is, 90% of the time they're napping.

On the linked chart, it's revealed that "AT LEAST 10% OF DUBAI IS ALWAYS AWAKE"

That's gotta be rough after a few months, how do they do it?

Hello tollway tramps, trendy uptowners, bearded and hatted downtowners, former yuppies, also ran’s, hipsters, The Deep elite, and cozy + bored suburban refugee’s.

dallas=fat.....so the sleep ratio means nothing.

ps-I'd like to thank the Indian fella that called and left a message this morning saying the "department of debt" was looking for me, and that if I didn't call back "immediately", he would have cops "call me"......OH MY!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I keep hearing every doctor on the planet preaching about getting MORE sleep, developing regular sleep patterns, and making restful sleep a priority in order to be healthier, substantially reduce risks of Alzheimers, heart attacks, strokes, and over-eating.  (People with less sleep are hungrier, and eat more.)

Dallas has excellent employment statistics, so more people are working here than much of the country.  That means getting enough sleep to function well and be alert the next day.  It also helps with short lunch breaks, and the temptation to "snack".

Dallas has enclaves of nightlife, but it's not the Las Vegas of the Southwest - and neither is Ft. Worth.

Dallas has more and more people exercising than ever before, so a lot of the walking doesn't show up from YMCAs and gyms.  It's also no secret that our weather doesn't lend itself to outdoor walking year-round.

I miss the Turkey Trot, but that is more of a social event for charity than exercise.

We'd ALL be healthier if we walked more.  But, until Global Warming (or whatever they're calling it this week) arrives in full force, Dallas weather is not apt to dramatically change.

Now, it's time for my nap.  Later...........zz.z.z.z.z.z

I always said Dallas was tired.

So let's not stress about being walkable, be proud of being nap-able.

Don't you know that 2 people close together can generate plenty of body heat?

Maybe you're right though,

Up all night, gotta sleep all day...
