Two Dallas Chinese Buffet Magnates Were Screwing Their Tipped Workers, and They're Not Alone

Yum. All this food makes me want to leave a bigger tip.
Ju Weng and Yu Con Weng are two brothers who have been living the dream life in Dallas, reaping the benefits of a very successful start-up business. The two have built a veritable Chinese buffet empire throughout the area: Together, they own and manage the Yes Buffet, Crown Buffet, Win Chinese Buffet, and Royal Buffet. If you've buffeted recently, chances are you've buffeted with a Weng Bro.

But the Weng brothers came under federal investigation this spring due to allegations that the predominantly tipped employees were being worked overtime for free. The investigation recently concluded, and it was discovered that the Wengs owed back wages to more than 60 employees.

The majority of employees at the four buffets were working between 55 and 60 hours per week without being paid for overtime labor. Most of these employees were also tipped staff, meaning their minimum wage sat at $2.13 per hour. The Wengs failed to ensure that the wages earned through tips matched the federally mandated minimum wage of $7.25.

This news comes in light of recent debate surrounding tipped workers' salaries. Many say that when the employer is dependant on the customer to provide a workers' salary, it incentivizes tip pooling violations, such as that of the Wengs.

The Weng brothers were unavailable for comment, but Juan Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Dallas bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor, told Unfair Park that the Wengs' story is just one of many around the city.

Often, he says, tip-pooling violations can come in addition to extra charges. Sometimes employers will also charge workers for broken equipment or dishes, or for their work uniforms. "This kind of thing happens quite a bit," says Rodriguez. "And unfortunately, it is fairly common around the DFW area."

No word on how long, exactly, the Weng employees were overworked without pay before someone stepped forward. "The most important thing is that people need to know their rights and call us if they think their rights are being violated," says Rodriguez. The Wengs will be paying $188,970 in back wages, to be divided among their employees depending on their overtime hours.

I just cannot bring myself to eat at a buffet.

Have you ever noticed that the "sneeze-guards" are waaaaaaaay to high to prevent children's sneezes from spraying all over that dim sum?

I have.

It is in the Chinese culture to abuse their workers.  That doesn't mean ALL of them in America do it, but it's quite prevalent.

One can't but notice that Chinese business, and especially restaurant businesses, are family affairs where everybody pitches in.  But, in the invisible caste system of the Chinese,  the workers such as waiters are kept at lower wages so they are afraid to lose their jobs for better jobs.

I DO admire their productivity and work ethic, but being extremely bright, they know they are cheating the system, and cheating their employees....not to mention breaking our laws.

Eliminate the sub-minimum "tipped" wage nonsense.

Raise the standard minimum to a livable wage.

Most of the meat in the photo probably had to go through Customs.

Not one comment about Yu Con-ning his employees out of their pay?

More attention needs to be paid to this if it is a Texas Cluster Fuck for employees. Fine and levy taxes on the restaurant until a plan for being honest is proven. This is just too sad.

Pay the help, and keep feral children away from the food. That's all we ask.

Cheap ass bastards. No one tips well at Chinese buffets either since they're just getting your drinks and clearing plates.

First! and first to eschew the screaming opportunity to make a pun out of Chinese names.

@DonkeyHotay Being a waiter is not supposed to be a career.  Typically, those are entry-level jobs, and it would dramatically make food prices go up to almost double the minimum wage.

It is yet another terrible idea out of this White House, which clearly has no understanding of Economics.

noblefurrtexas

@Montemalone No; this is the consequence of a Chinese caste system that was imported into this county in the 1800s. It could happen anywhere in America.

@pak152 You get your own drinks, too? Throw down a few bucks, you cheapskate.

That may be why they're having to work so many hours, just to catch up with workers actually paid minimum wages.

@J_A_ Actually I give them about 25% minimum. Plus if there's a tip jar at the mongolian BBQ or similar, they get a few bucks. Works wonders when I go back in.

Oh, alright, I'll do it myself: the Wengs are represented by their cousin, Mr. S. Chew.

Neither is being stupid.

@noblefurrtexas @DonkeyHotay What are your qualifications? Last I checked, the White House CEA consisted of PHDs in Economics from Harvard and UC Berkley, including the former Chair of Economics at Harvard...

But I'm sure your resume is much more impressive.

Funny, you politely requested that I not mention your name in posts some time ago, and I politely agreed. For some reason, I thought the gentlemanly agreement was reciprocal, I was mistaken, as this and numerous other comments by you make clear.

Odd that a queer and his sockpuppets who can't seem to quit me has surmised that I have a crush on him, apparently evidenced by my failure to mention his name.

As for the topic, the waitrons should get a minimum of 10%, more if you're a regular. If you consider Chinese buffets to be puke, you should tip 50%. If you're a queer with an inflated sense of self-importance, just stay out of Chinese restaurants altogether, they tend to not like Nancies.

@TheRuddSki  Why the fuck am I trying to have a rational conversation with you.  Just tell me what is meant by this sockpuppet bit.  I just looked it up and have no clue whatsoever.  So spit it out.  If I understand TheRuddsi is saying Jack Jett is a deceiving name?  And less chaff?  Less chaff that what?  Than you?

There is so much out there to find and rag on me about that bashing my name seems so far fetched.

Why the fuck am I trying to have a rational conversation with you.

So you can preen? I really don't know why you would troll me as much as you do, I really don't care, I just thought I'd wonder out loud, because it seems, in light of your request, somewhat hypocritical.

As to sockpuppets, let's just say there is (cough) similitude, but again, no biggie, relax and carry on.

JackJett
JackJett

@TheRuddSki  NO dude.  You call me out for being a sock puppet and do so under a pseudonym, a deceitful name would be incredibly hypocritical if you didn't have something to back it up.  Put the name in Search at the top of this page and there and there is proof I am who I say I am.

You are playing the hurt victim and when I ask you to back up your words you go into your word dancing with ..let's just say (cough-similitude-no biggie-relax)  You sound like a Sarah Palin impersonater.  HOW am I sock puppet when I use my real name  and not The Jett-Ski.  I want to know how to NOT be one.

I am not sure how one can attempt to read this blog and not troll you.  This blog is you and you IS this blog 24/7, infinity.  Any, as a poppy, you just keep growing and everyday someone has a new lawnmower,

But we love you beyond control.....now go see something about that (cough) as you know how much I worry. (place multiple cute avatars here, some happy, sad and laughing and one coughing)

TheRuddSki

@JackJett

There is no way to "prove" your sockpuppetry, but insuspect "TheRudeski" may be you, among others. It is your right as a free American to create alternate identities.

The way to not troll me is to not make catty little references to me with your girlfriends, and yes, that can be done.

Now, as a free American, you have every right to make catty with the girls, but when you get called on it - leading to a rush of deleted comments and a lot of haughty blather, especially after your referenced (and honored) request of me - it makes me wonder why you feel it neccessary, that's all.

Hopefully, you'll not feel the need to carry this on, I'm done.
