Congressman Steve Stockman Gave an Interview That's Insane, Even for Him

220px-Steve_Stockman_official_portrait.jpg
House.gov
Representative Steve Stockman

Houston-area House member Steve Stockman never fails to make Unfair Park grateful it's based in DFW rather than anywhere near the congressman's Bayou City fiefdom. The guy has suggested arming infants, walked out of one State of the Union address and invited Ted Nugent to another. He's also raised funds to cover his defunct Senate campaign's debts by disingenuously promising to try to impeach President Obama -- whom Stockman apparently believes is a secret Muslim.

Unfair Park could go on and on. All that he's done is what makes his interview with World Net Daily earlier this month so amazing. If you view Stockman as some sort performance artist, he's clearly taken his work to the next level. If you don't, and you weren't already scared that this guy represents our state at the federal level, you should be terrified now.

Commenting throughout an article by WND's Jerome Corsi, Stockman claims that the current influx of undocumented minors crossing into the United States is the result of a plot by the president to destabilize the U.S. and gain electoral support.

The article claims that, while studying at Columbia, President Obama learned about something called the Cloward-Piven theory -- which is named after Andrew Cloward and Francis Fox Piven of the university. The theory was developed in the '60s as a way to fight poverty. Basically, it calls for overloading the welfare system to create chaos and necessitate a new, more robust welfare system taking its place.

Stockman says the president "is trying to do a Cloward-Piven thing with the border," because it's "an open secret Obama is trying to flood Texas with illegals to make it into a blue state."

"Obama follows all the far-left, Leninist, socialist-type stuff," Stockman told WND.

It is unclear from the interview exactly how undocumented folks who are unable to register to vote would cause a Democratic swing in Texas or which of Obama's center-right policies would make the Bolsheviks proud.

Nevertheless, we're glad Stockman has crystallized the problem for us. It isn't that Honduras has the world's highest murder rate or the escalating violence and crushing poverty of El Salvador and Guatemala that spurs families to send their children unaccompanied to the U.S. Instead, it is, like everything else, the president's fault. At least that's what the guy who got almost 71 percent of the vote in his last election says.

We tried to give Stockman the benefit of the doubt, so we asked his office if the quotes were legitimate. As of yet, the representative's camp hasn't responded. We'll update in this space if they do.

Rolling Stone headline this week:
Lone Star Crazy: How Right-Wing Extremists Took Over Texas.  In today's Texas, which is falling into the hands of gun nuts, border-sealers and talk-radio charlatans, George W. Bush would practically be considered a communist.

I certainly am no fan of Steve Stockman (the missing candidate on the campaign trail earlier this year).  But if writer Stephen Young wants to use Stockman to imply there is no real crisis on our southern border, then I fear it is Stockman who has a stronger grasp on reality.

President Obama's unilateral and illegal decision to stop enforcing the nation's immigration laws has served as a powerful incentive in attracting the surge at the border.  Endemic poverty and violence is not a new phenomenon in countries such as El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.  But the belief that any minor--though most are 14 to 17 year old males--who makes it to the border will be allowed to stay in the U.S. has never been stronger.

I believe Obama has multiple motivations for what he is doing.  But one that is seldom discussed in the DO is how a policy of open borders serves the cheap-labor interests of the economic elite.  I have to laugh when I hear Obama described as a socialist when in fact he is a crony capitalist just like Rick Perry.  It is no accident that virtually every billionaire in the country is campaigning for mass immigration (from the Koch brothers and Sheldon Adelson on the right to Michael Bloomberg in the middle to George Soros and Mark Zuckerberg on the left).  Nor is it any accident that mass immigration is supported by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, and THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS.

Who are the losers--the large majority of U.S. citizens in the middle and working classes.  Who are the biggest losers--those U.S. citizens who are poor and disproportionately African American and Latino.

Maybe Stockman thinks Obama studied at Colombia University, or...Universidad de Colombia, as it's known. I can see him getting confused on that.

Shouldn't a secret Muslim like Obama bent on implementing Sharia law and indoctrinating the vast swaths of the American sheeple into submission be supporting the republican policies of anti abortion, "family values", and open carrying of assault weapons (not unlike the Taliban or ISIS) instead of supporting some sort of pseudo Lenninist policy of overwhelming the welfare system in hopes of turning Texas into a rosey shade purple?  If a politician is going to spout xenophobic shit they should at least be consistent in the basis for their bull lest they seem like race bating sycophant desperate for a vote.

We got an AVALANCHE of undocumented minors rolling at us and this muthufucka thinks its God's Will?  There may be a million behind them if it works.

If the author of this silly piece had done any research at all, he'd find plenty of material connecting the idiot Obama with C-P, which the author apparently just heard about.

The reason this blog is (according to a local gay celebrity) turning into a right-wing hothouse is because the writing provides a target-rich environment.

A lot of items don't make sense to me about the whole situation.

Media reports talk about people paying smugglers $5,000 to $10,000 per child to get them to the US.  What doesn't make sense is that the per capita GDP of Guatemala is only about $5,000.  The average household annual income is about $2,500.  If someone in Guatemala could come up with that kind of money they would be in the upper quartile of wealth in Guatemala.

What is happening now at the border is the exact same thing that occurred prior to the 1986 amnesty.

President Obama wouldn't spend anything to increase border security, but will spend $2 Billion for housing the illegal immigrants.

There is something else that is going on other than the children entering the country illegally.  If the border is flooded by children who walk up to the border agents and occupy their time and resources to process them, what is happening on the rest of the border.  It is sort of like the old Soviet Union military doctrine.  Russia has 100,000 tanks at the border.  NATO has 10,000 tanks.  With a kill ratio of 5 Russian tanks for every 1 NATO tank, at the end of the war, Russia has 50,000 tanks and NATO has 0 tanks.  Guess who won?

holmantx

The President would never flood the zone with kids, hold them there, apply a little political heat, manly transfer all available Border Patrol personnel to the southern border from where they are really needed, to protect us from Canada, and blame the Republicans for their heartless stance on immigration . . .

in order to capture the Hispanic vote.

I think he blamed a video.

Why, he didn't know kids would come until he read about it in the New York Times that they took him up on his offer of amnesty and found they could just turn themselves in to the nearest Border Patrol.  Why, it's bullshit he has been running ads in those countries and if is agencies have, he's outraged.  People will pay.

There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here!

Stockman's right, and the Observer is shrill.

Everything else aside, the enormity of this self-wrought problem, the eventual cost of the solution and the plight of these children, this event paints a poor picture of US politicians, on both sides of the aisle.  It paints an even poorer picture of US Voters, for being caught up in this whipped up controversy to the point of frenzy.  This is how Democrat-Republican politics works.  Spin the voters up on what is, in essence, a side issue.  Get them gnashing their teeth at each other and casting blame about recklessly.  They won't focus on the real issues.  The American people have proven it time and again, we are rapidly becoming too stupid to govern ourselves.  The political class does the bidding of the Corporate masters, the media throws bones to the populace, which throws itself into a political mosh pit, a mindless orgy of political fervor.

Enforce current immigration law.  There are two types of immigrant in the country, legal and illegal.  These children aren't legal immigrants.  You can call them illegal or call them refugees, but you can't call them immigrants.  If they are illegal immigrants, current LAW (as opposed to policy) demands we take steps to repatriate them to their home country.  If they are refugees, standard procedure is to segregate them from the mainstream, provide for their basic needs, and take steps to repatriate them to their home country.  We do not have an obligation to integrate illegal aliens or refugees into US society.  There is a legal process for foreigners to enter and join US society.  It is there for a reason.

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul  As to the price for smuggling- just a hunch, but if the cartels in control of smuggling drugs are also in charge of smuggling children, they may find it cheaper to smuggle children as a loss leader to keep the BP occupied while the drugs flow in with fewer seizures

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul We overthrew the gov't of Honduras a little over a year ago.  The jobs/economy has collapsed, civil war has broken out and drug running is increasing.  When we destabilize countries this happens.  In Jordan and Turkey they're called refugees, here, we're too stupid to know we overthrew the gov't and that they're refugees.

@scottindallas @dsjohnson64  I see you are very fond of quoting the phony deportation numbers from the Obama Administration as published on almost a daily basis in THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS (by way of AP dispatches and THE NEW YORK TIMES).

What the Obama administration has started doing on a massive scale is to include in their deportation numbers Border Patrol "returns" of those who have just crossed the border.  Previous administrations did this only to a very limited extent.

The Obama Administration claims to have deported 368,644 individuals in FY 2013.  But most of these "deportations" were actually Border Patrol "returns."  Only 133,551 were actual deportations from the interior of the country (for a 20 year low).

The odds of an illegal alien who has not committed a serious felony being deported from the interior of the country is close to zero (0)!  That is because Obama has been busy dismantling interior enforcement of immigration laws (as a strong incentive for more illegal immigration).

What is even more interesting is that even many illegal aliens who have committed felonies are not being deported.  Last year ICE released 36,000 illegal aliens with felony convictions--including murder convictions--in the United States.

So no wonder we now have a border surge.  And far more to come.

TheRuddSki
TheRuddSki topcommenter

@scottindallas

There actually is a crisis, according to the border patrol and many others. As to the deportation numbers, there is quite a bit of dispute surrounding the claims. But let's, as tradition now demands, simply declare that the debate is over, which solves any problems related to policy.

One thing that we must remember though - as in the IRS debacle, Libya, the fall of Iraq, the border rush, etc - this is the fault of Republicans, Obama has nothing to do with any of it. He's either fundraising, partying, vacationing or golfing, I'm not sure he's even been reading the papers so he may not even know about any of these Republican screw-ups.

However, when he does find out about them, you can bet that no-one will be angrier than him.

@bvckvs @RTGolden1 It is still a side issue.  It just had to become a bigger issue to achieve the desired effect.  It would not be hard to stem the tide, like it would not be hard to make the laws involving marriage equal and just.  The central issue facing our government, our population, and American democracy today has nothing to do with immigrants, homosexuals, heterosexuals, pot-heads, gun-nuts or any other fabricated class of people.  The central issues facing us are divisive politics, voter apathy and general stupidity.  WE could fix things if we would vote for people instead of parties.  WE could fix things if we would think for ourselves instead of letting pundits do it for us.  We could fix things if we would come together as a community and act on the problems, instead of blaming 'the other guys' for it.

@bvckvs Again, nothing to add to the discussion.  Do you really think, coming from you, accusations of stupidity have any meaning whatsoever?  Laws can be, and by constitutional definition, should be, equal and just.  It is quite simple for a forward thinking, reasonably intelligent person to grasp.  A marriage, in the eyes of the law is a business merger of the assets and liabilities of two entities.  The marriage vows are simply articles of incorporation (in the eyes of the law, which is bound by precedent and 200+years of constitutional interpretation to be free from religious prejudice).  It is not hard to take the words "between a man and a woman" and replace it with "between two persons".

Whether I agree with it or not, that is the way it should be.  Anything else is law colored with religion.
