Really? Cleveland?

Another gorgeous summer day in Cleveland, the jewel of Lake Erie.

GOP leadership has officially announced that exotic, exciting Cleveland will be hosting the RNC convention in 2016. The final announcement has come after weeks of teasers.

Last month, the RNC selection committee narrowed the convention site shortlist to four cities. Then, last week, they announced that Kansas City and Denver had been eliminated. Yesterday, the Twitterverse was in a frenzy hoping that the RNC would choose between Cleveland and Dallas.

Finally, after you could just about cut the tension with a bullet from your air rifle, the RNC announced this morning that Cleveland was the lucky winner. We hope you're all as tickled as we are with this decision.

While Dallas was a strong contender for the last several months, the appeal of a high-profile GOP event in solidly purple Ohio -- not to mention Johnny Manziel -- eventually swayed the RNC selection committee.

Dallas officials touted a high percentage of Hispanic voters as a key demographic that could be reached if the convention were held here. Also we have Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, not to mention the Cowboys themselves. No, really. DO NOT MENTION THEM.

But although Democratic leadership is increasingly investing time and resources to turn Texas into a battleground state, it will likely be some time before there is any serious battle over Texas electoral votes. For now, the GOP can sleep soundly knowing that Texas, in all likelihood, will remain a firmly red state in 2016. And no Republican president has ever won the White House without winning Ohio.

Still. We hear Cleveland really sucks.

Dallas was never in play.  If the GOP wants the White House in 2016 they need Ohio for the electoral votes.  Texas isn't in play yet.

That's what happens when you don't have enough available hotel rooms and dates the RNC wanted.

Actually this is good. Need a laff. The Dallas excuse machine will provide it.

Obama won Ohio in 2012 (and therefore won the election) by ignoring rule-of-law due process and stealing from US citizens in order to buy his way into office.

'Obama’s cars Czar strong armed GM through a political bankruptcy that flaunted judicial practice to reward Obama’s union allies and protect their gold-plated pensions, put the government in charge of product lines and investment, cheat creditors, and leave taxpayers on the hook for tens of billions of dollars.

Just ask the tens of thousands of retirees who sunk their life savings into now-worthless GM stock, whether Obama “saved” GM? Ask small bondholder, Debra June, whose $70,000 investment in GM bonds is now worth $200, whether Obama’s GM bankruptcy was fair to all or favored his political cronies?'

'Obama rejected this sensible and tried-and-true route favored by Romney. He wanted a political bankruptcy to reward friends, punish enemies, and secure Michigan and Ohio for the 2012 election.'

A recent poll from Quinnipiac University found that 45 percent of American voters believed the U.S. would have been better off with Romney as president compared to 38 percent who stated the U.S. would be in worse shape.

At least the city of Dallas won't have to pay millions to fumigate the stench left by the Republicans after they slither out of town.

The last time the GOP planned it's national convention, for 2012, they chose Tampa, Florida during hurricane season. The venue was available then, you see. Sure enough, Hurricane Isaac showed up. In 2008, Hurricane Gustav made landfall on the Gulf coast the day the convention was supposed to start in St. Paul, Minnesota. Most convention activities were canceled for that day, but the GOP rallied and managed to nominate the McCain/Palin ticket. Disasters seem to be tracking these RNC events lately. Look out, Cleveland, and look out, GOP.

Two things:

1. This is something that will be happening in the summer. Lets compare temperatures in both places for the next week. Dallas will be having highs in the mid to upper 90s. Cleveland will be having highs in the 70s to low 80s. The clear winner is Cleveland.
2. This morning on NPR, they were reporting one of the prime factors for the RNC is the capability and willingness of the host city to pay for the convention. Perhaps, they do not feel that Dallas can do this?

Personally, I am happy that entire circus is not coming to Dallas.

Every Texas Republican should not vote in protest of this egregious slight.

What, they're going to hold it in a swing state instead of one that's in the bag? SHOCKER.

I think it's partly about the immigration shelters that will be popping up.  They don't want to have the coverage of their convention overshadowed by protests against refugee children being given food and medicine.

It doesn't really matter where the next US President is nominated.

Having been on the Great Lakes in August and Dallas in August, you would see as I already know that it is a no-brainer if we are talking about weather. Last time I checked, the convention wasn't held in January.

Its nice to go out in the summertime without fearing the withering hot hellish flame wind that will greet your face as you do in Dallas.

I didn't think Cleveland had a large enough male prostitution scene to support a Republican convention.

I thought by pulling gay conversion therapy out of their retro back of tricks would do it.  They should have gone all the way with an attempt to ban inter-racial marriage.  Perhaps we can get them to read the comments of some of the Top Commenter's here to reconsider.  Some of them make Sarah Palin look liberal, rational and sane.

Sad day for Dallas hookers and bathroom stalls.

"Dallas officials touted a high percentage of Hispanic voters as a key demographic that could be reached if the convention were held here."

Well, considering the above demographic has been segregated (by City Hall) from opportunity and the strong confirmation of such by the FEDs that City Hall has been perpetuating segregation, its not surprising Dallas got the eventual AXE.

Big downside of getting caught committing racist acts against its own people, those that City Hall considers lesser citizens.

Nobody in the their right mind would want to associate with this kind of attention.

Good!  Since we can't afford, police, firemen, libraries, parks and streets; we certainly can't afford a political convention.

@ozonelarryb Dallas would not have been ready in June 2016.  This is the latest reason being given for the city not getting the bid.  That plus our refusal to accede to the demand of the GOP that the winning city foot the $60 million cost.

@holmantx

Quite coincidental that the government divested in GM (losing only 10 billion or so), just before the record recalls began. I'm sure the timing was entirely happenstancical.

Have you ever spent any time in the Great Lakes region during the summer months? I'll take a sunny 95 degrees in Dallas any day over an 85 degree day with 85% humidity anywhere in that region. Stifling is the word for it, I think.

I guess it doesn't much matter to me anyhow, as I honestly could not care less where the GOP hosts their little party.

But Dallas certainly has the section 8 and illegal alien population to greet the Democratic convention with roses thrown at their feet.

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul  That stuff is all just freeloader socialist crap anyway.  If the free market doesn't provide it, it's just not very important.  What is important is handbags with prestigious two-letter logos, 2741 cable channels, surgical enhancements to make 63-year-old women look 49, and little hollow pretzels filled with fake bacon-flavored cheese.

Yes, property rights and rule-of-law are both overrated:

'The root causes of Zimbabwe's economic meltdown are the corruption and looting on the one hand and the failure to restore confidence in the donor and investors alike that Zimbabwe will uphold property rights and rule of law. The regime has failed to address any of the two problems because neither could be solved without dismantling the party' political patronage system.'

I can best confirm approximately 3 percent in my own family research.
