Did Those 15 Minutes of Air Time Between Obama and Perry Accomplish Anything? (No.)

U.S. Air Force
Air Force One, which the president parked at DFW yesterday before flying a helicopter with Gov. Perry to Love Field. We wonder how much that political compromise cost?
President Obama and Governor Perry have been facing weeks of political tension regarding the recent surge in unaccompanied immigrant children fleeing central America and arriving at the Texas border. Although Dallas has made headlines in its promise to shelter many of these kids, it's an issue that has been attracting national concern: Perry sent an open letter to President Obama criticizing his border policies. Obama, meanwhile, is seeking more than $3.7 billion in emergency funds from Congress to deal with the crisis, and taking political fire for not visiting the border himself.

Obama traveled Texas this week to attend fundraisers in Denver, Dallas and Austin. He flew to DFW airport before taking a 15-minute helicopter ride from DFW to Love Field. During those 15 minutes, Perry accompanied Obama on the helicopter to fulfill the meeting that Perry had requested.

Perry had, earlier this week, requested a private meeting with Obama. Obama had replied suggesting that the governor simply meet with Obama at the Austin airport for a quick handshake, and presumably a photo op, on the tarmac.

Perry then sent an open letter on Monday to President Obama criticizing his offer, saying it would allow time for a "thoughtful" discussion on the border situation. The two mended their quarrel when the White House compromised by calling for a Dallas meeting to discuss the border situation with Perry, Dallas officials, and local faith leaders. Perry, meanwhile, got his alone time with the president in a short helicopter ride.

The longer Dallas meeting, post-helicopter flight, was scrambled together last minute by Obama staffers, keen to avoid the political damage that was being caused by what some were calling Obama's "Katrina moment." The comment was first voiced by a fellow Democrat, Representative Henry Cuellar of Laredo, who compared Obama's seeming ambivalence in visiting the border to President Bush's infamous 2005 flyover of Hurricane Katrina damage to New Orleans.

The 15-minute meeting between Obama and Perry was at least cordial. Perry shared his worries about the current border situation with the President. Obama, in return, asked Perry for his support in requesting the $3.7 billion from Congress.

"The bottom line is there's nothing the governor indicated he'd like to see that I have a philosophical objection to," Obama said yesterday, calling the fleeting meeting a "good exchange of ideas." "If the Texas delegation is prepared to move, this thing can get done next week," he said.

Sounds simple enough, right? Oh. Wait.

It was so awesome to watch our President helicopter in to Love Field.I have several friends as well as myself who have greatly benefitted from the Affordable Care Ace in addition to saving hundreds of dollars per year.Yesterday we found out that a great number of Republican’s are enjoying the benefits as well.Yet they do have the option NOT to take the savings by offering the back to the insurance company, put self caps on their benefits and refuse coverage for their current pre existing conditions.

He has worked harder towards equality for all more than any other President and kept us out of needless wars. Not to mention he has kept this country safe, even from other American’s who despise him and threaten him.Just the fact he would fly into Dallas which doesn’t have a great reputation for its treatment of Democrat Presidents is to be admired.

It made me proud to be an American to see the first Black President flying into my city to raise money for my party. And to know the next President will break another type of glass ceiling and Hillary will continue to bring the country back to what it was when Bill was in control and prior to being hijacked by war monger for profit who can not leave the United States for fear of being arrested for War Crimes.

Obama ROCKS!

Clinton Part Two….Soon to ROCK!

I would like to know the statutory authority that the President has to commandeer public road ways.

Shutting down major routes during rush hour is a recipe for disaster.

For example, southbound Inwood was backed up to north of Royal Lane.  East bound Royal was backed up west of Inwood.  People were driving down entrance ramps on the DNT to escape the back up on the DNT.

And all of this for the President's political fundraiser visit.

I admit I do not care for many of President Obama's policies. But, what do they expect to happen when he comes to the border? Will all of those people coming here suddenly turn around and go back? Will the gangs in Central America suddenly decide to become charities? Will anything beneficial happen? The answer to all of this is no. What will happen is that people who are actually busy trying to do something will have to drop things so that they can put on dog and pony shows and run escort for VIPs.

It's the same thing when Bush didn't immediately fly to New Orleans. It is not that the President does not care. It is the fact that the President showing up somewhere that a lot of work is going on is detrimental to that work. It is better that he get reports from people on the scene and direct things from a distance.

A couple of observations...

Why, in each picture of the meeting held at Love Field, does it look like Perry is hitting on an unidentified woman while everyone else is engaged in the discussion?

Did anyone else notice that the President started his discussion of their visit by saying the Gov had 4 (four) main concerns he expressed during the meeting.  When he started to elaborate, I instantly imagined 1-3, then ... OOPS!

For the record, I thought Perry's letter requesting more than a tarmac handshake was well written and reasonable.  He was given VIP treatment and was praised by the President...during whose speech he released a statement that was not so well written and reasonable.

I envision Perry as the little dachshund barking and nipping at Obama's heels and Obama leans over and pats the little dog on the head while saying, it's okay little buddy, I understand!

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz I see nothing wrong or embarrassing to Texas that Perry said. (You should hear what some of Texas' Congressmen are saying about Obama. )

It is perfectly alright for Perry to say what he said.  He was offering discretionary comments about Obama's utter failure and incompetence on the invasion of our borders with criminals, terrorist, and permanent welfare cases.

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul They also put up hundreds of "NO PARKING" signs in neighborhoods to keep anyone from parking in front of their own house.

Are there THAT many people who wanted to show Obama how much he is disliked?

You hit on a major point ... people don't realize how disruptive a presidential visit is.  Imagine visiting that (security, media, road closings, cordons) on already over-worked and under-staffed folks, both professionals and volunteers.  It would really be selfish to put them through that so he can be photographed surveying the situation.

@Tim.Covington You mean like when bush was in NYC in Septemeber 2011? Or on the deck of an aircraft carrier a short time later?

I don't disagree with your assessment, but bush had no problem jumping in front of a camera when he was playing president.

@ScottsMerkin

Problem is, that's how Obama envisions himself dealing with everybody.

"It's ok you little dummy, Mr. Fix-it will just throw a few more millions on the deficit pile and everything will be all better!"

Obama's version of government has turned into nothing more than a manufacturing plant for band-aids made of red ink and fairy dust.

Perry on the border in boat and helicopter show with Hannity tonight allows for contrast with Obama and also gives Perry some exposure if he decides to enter the GOP primary.

Yes it does appear politically motivated but OTOH there are a lot of people under stress down there glad for the exposure regardless of political leanings.

Remember the female AZ gov shaking her finger in Obama's face on another tarmac grip-n-grin? Wouldn't it have blown up the blogosphere if Obama had patted her on the head, or the cheek? That would have been very cool, for those of us who find the smell of tear gas in actual riots distasteful and prefer our bomb throwing of the verbal sort.

@noblefurrtexas If you are attempting to make a reference to the Jim Jones Christian suicide and my feelings about Obama, then you should at least be aware that it was NOT Kool-Aid that Jim served his followers.  Like most religious leaders, he didn't care enough to even serve up a name brand when leading them down a path of total self destruction

Now, how that connects to my feelings about our President or being a proud American/Texan, I don't really know.  But if it flips your pancake to spew incorrect pop culture bullshit, be my guest.  The most important thing to remember is to VOTE for Hillary Clinton in 2016 so you can be part of the solution and no longer be part of the problem.  Peace & Love Beads 4 Ever Dude.

@leftocenter This disaster has been a long time building.  Since 2011 the number of children from Central America has been steadily going up.  Unless Obama is a total uncaring idiot should have known about the problem for years.  This is not like a hurricane that just sprung up a week ago.

@Montemalone @Tim.Covington How about the time he was giving a press conference in Iraq and got the boot thrown at his face as a form of appreciation.   What happened to those flowers he thought he would get?

But then again, you can fool me once then shame to me but twice you shame then on me to you and then shame you then again and so on and such as the Iraq shame....you...me...

Bush's record approval ratings came about partly because if his visit to NY 5 days post-attack.

Bush's speech on the carrier was a show of respect to our military.

Bush was popular until the Golden Mosque attack, and Harry Reid's subsequent call for surrender.

Did you see the report that Nagin was sentenced to 10 years in jail?  That was the real crisis that an incompetent, unethical petty criminal was largely responsible for the whole mess.

The hurricane had already passed NO when the levee failures occurred.

@bvckvs @Tim.Covington The President coming to the border accomplishes five things:

1.  He can thank the Border Patrol troops and others, and show leadership as well as appreciation.

2.  He can see, smell, and hear the consequences of his policies in terms of the warehousing of teenagers - many of the with diseases and parasites.

3.  He can show the country and the Latino countries that he's engaged and concerned about the health and safety of these children.

4.  He can better understand both sides of the problem, and he can show residents on the border that he cares, and is taking the time to become personally aware.

5.  He can talk to the people caring for the teenagers about how they are doing, what they need, and what problems they have that need addressing.

Of course, Obama has never managed so much as a hot dog stand, so he doesn't understand leadership OR management.

Obama is not pretending that there's no crisis. Bush was.

Couple of points, perfesser.

1) according to Obama, this is a "situation", there is careful political avoidance if the word "crisis". Probably so folks won't think it's the 'crisis" even his own party calls it. Who's pretending here, Frick or Frack?

2) The response to Hurricane Katrina was by far the largest--and fastest-rescue effort in U.S. history, as an educator, you should know this.

'Obama is not pretending that there's no crisis.'

His Senior Advisor publicly referred to it solely as a 'situation' two days ago.

Obama attempts to deal with everything by pretending there is no crisis until he is forced to put down his pool stick and fly into crisis territory to raise money.

Obama's failed strategy :A 'situation' with no use of the word 'illegal' by the compliant media and this thing goes away.

@JackJett @noblefurrtexas Hillary? ask Romanians how they feel she supported their President when after 70% of the electorate voted against him in a referendum,,how when she was Secetary Of State her ambassador in Romania Glickenstein never delivered on a easier visa access to the USA but did sell them old F-16's. and was ambassador when Harvard University entered into a corrupt land deal that saw the destruction and harvesting of forests from the Carpathian mountains...Hillary that staunch supporter of Democracy...do some reseach before your knee's jerk..

@JackJett @noblefurrtexas I'm well aware that the liquid base of the cyanide cocktails was not the brand name "KoolAid", but a generic brand.  Although the phrase for those who kill themselves believing every word of the lies by someone else still applies.

Didn't they teach that at your DISD school?  And, I wouldn't vote for Hillary Clinton if she were the only candidate on the ballot.  She is among the most deceitful, dishonest, and scheming women it has been my displeasure to observe.

Even your pal Obama can't stand her.

It is a serious humanitarian crisis, and I don't think knowing about it and impeding the flow of refugees or acting to change the circumstances that send  them here are the same thing.

It's an incredibly difficult and multi-layered problem.  I'd really prefer Obama did go.  Has it occurred to you that images of Obama comforting unaccompanied minors at the border personally might even spur more influx of people?

Potential unintended consequences.

His excuse for not going to the border was that he doesn't do 'theater' but he proposed the handshake-on-the-tarmac 'theater' counter-proposal with Perry that Perry politely declined.

He is slipping when his untruths take 15 seconds to figure out instead of taking 6 investigations butting their heads against Holder and the massive Federal Bureaucracy to unravel.

@TheRuddSki Rudd, You're exactly right.  The response to Katrina was not dissimilar to going to war against the disaster.

Unlike Obama, Bush mobilized the resources of the government in advance.  FEMA, the military, the Coast Guard, and several other agencies were ready and already working when Katrina hit.

Bush flew over the disaster to see for himself how extensive the damage was.  But, he wisely didn't want to plane to land as a presidential visit in the midst of this disaster would have sucked law enforcement resources, and been a major disruption in New Orleans.

Obama would have done it for the Photo-Op.

@aintmisbehavin  Trust me I have done my Hillary research, just as I had 2008.  I am happy with all she does and all she stands for.  I have no problem stating it and doing so with my real name.  So my knees are not jerking.

I will admit to a lack of awareness on jets sales to Romania.  Whenever anyone has and is involved in so many actions that are so eclectic you can expect complaints.  She is a non stop worker and vented far more than any other candidate.

How about you, have you selected your candidate? Is the F16 jets sales to Romania a deal breaker for you?

Maybe Elizabeth Warren.

After voicing your complaint about Hillary, what compelled you to throw in a personal jab by suggesting that my support for her was knee jerk?  How DID the demeaning of a fellow commenter advance your agenda?  It did bother me, but just curious as we can have different opinions on a certain action and still have a common goal.

JackJett
JackJett

@noblefurrtexas Just curious, is your personal dig about talking points (which were my own personal thoughts about seeing my President land in my city) and the DISD bit spewed at me for a specific reason?

In other words, do you something personal against me or is it that you dislike who I support and thus feel compelled to belittle those who support candidates or political issues that you don't believe in?

I am curious as to why you have the need to do that.  Do you think that everyone who follows your same line of politics is deserving of your respect?  Please explain to me how this works.  You feel superior and if so, why hide behind a pseudonym?

First of all, it is not the job of the Congress to manage the border.  That is HIS responsibility, even though he dodges it.

Second, the White House has not given the Congress a plan or a budget as to how the money will spent.

Third, the White House has failed to send to Congress a plan and request for legislation of the laws that allowed this to happen.

Obama is, without question, the most deceitful, corrupt, and inept president in our history.

And, I don't feel "superior" to you, as you speculated.  My name is not a pseudonym.  I even have a FaceBook page, although I seldom go there.  I also know who you are. We still have rational political differences.  :)

@noblefurrtexas  With due respect, I understand differences of opinion.  I have been dealing with them for 35 years as a gay man.  And I certainly get my fill here.

I don't understand this need to issue personal attacks on those who support different parities .......for no other reason than they support another party.  Which always leads me to believe there must be something else.  Both parties are supposedly working for the betterment of America.  Being of a different party doesn't make one a hater of America.

If I got rid of all my Republican friends I would have we would have to cut out about half our friends and most of our family.
