Bored Dallas Soccer Fans Staged a Pitch Invasion at Real Madrid versus Roma Last Night

The Cotton Bowl was filled with 57,000-plus soccer fans last night, there to see some of the world's greatest footballers do some very mediocre footballing.

It was slow and scoreless for the first hour or so, until Roma's Francesco Totti scored at the 58-minute mark. Fans were irritated and bored by then, though, and disappointed that Ronaldo spent the game in his sweatpants on the Real Madrid bench.

With just three minutes left on the clock, several fans had had enough: One young guy ran on the field toward Ronaldo. After he was given just a rough shove and wag of the finger, many were encouraged by the lack of punishment. Altogether, around 20 fans, mostly young men, stormed the field.

The crowd quickly became more interested in cat-and-mouse game between several cops and fans than in the actual game. One guy ran up to Real Madrid's Isco for a quick selfie before casually jogging away from a slow-moving, slightly overweight policeman.

Several field invaders were kids running up to their favorite players. One enveloped Real Madrid's goalkeeper, Diego Lopez, in a bear hug before sprinting back to his seat. Several others managed to get autographs before security sauntered up.

In a dramatic statement, one man ran across the field with a Palestinian flag in his hands. Many other Palestinian flags, and a few Israeli flags, popped out from several supporters as the crowd displayed their political colors. This man was handcuffed and led off the field.

Around ten minutes after the invasion began, order was restored and the game continued. After the game, which included five minutes of extra time, a security guard found the situation funny in retrospect, saying there was no way he could have caught up with the sprinters.

"The boss came out after the game and was like, 'You let all those kids come down?'" He laughed. "I'm like, 'Yeah, I'm 54, they're 18. What do you expect?'" One Reddit commenter put it best: "This is why we can't have nice things, Dallas."

If everyone had sat quietly in the stands this article would have been about what a bunch of sad sack soccer fans we have here.  I'm glad that it happened, people are passionate about this game and I hope that we see more of these events at the Cotton Bowl.

roma held real madrid--the best, most expensive club in the world-to no goals despite consistent and quality pressure.  no ronaldo but it was basically a full madrid squad.

only boring part was standing around for 5 minutes of stoppage time waiting for these idiots to let the game play out. at the time madrid was pressing hard for a goal. the delay took the pace out of the game.

headline of this posting should read 'idiot fans stage pitch invasion...'

Obama is most certainly to blame for this foreign invasion.

They were probably just trying to get a closer look at the grass growing, that they had watched from afar for two hours...Boring, clap clap clap...Boring, clap clap clap

@justsayin So, the best way to show passion for the game is to invade the "pitch"?

Sounds way to euro for me.

@ScottsMerkin just further proof that the DO lacks any sort of professional journalists who know what they are writing about

It can't be true.

Steve Brown and the Dallas Morning News hasn't pick it up yet (ha!).

Scooped by the Dallas Observer.

Oh the embarrassment.

@mcdallas this argument is old and tired.  If you find it boring, dont watch and avoid commenting the same stupid soccer rhetoric we've heard for ever.

'Friendly' soccer with marquis players sitting is boring just like Jerry Jones preseason football is boring.

Do you have some other angle as to why anyone would not feel duped and/or suckered into attending?

@ScottsMerkin @mcdallas No.

I'm taking over this post for a good old game of real american football.

Take your orange slices and mini cups of water and go home in your mom's minivan.

The real men are here to play a real game.

@dingo @MattL11 @Joshstruckoutagain I've seen many friendlies that are far from boring. Plus, there were quite a few marquis names out there, it looks like. If anybody felt duped, that's on them.

Hope he makes it.  MMR Realty Advisors is just him.  He operates out of his house in Carrollton.  He's been around a while.  Hope he's hooked up with some equity partners.  He probably made a pretty good deal on the land assemblage since he'll be the first in.
