As Dallas Courts the Republican Convention, the City's Secret Weapon May Be Texas Demographics

Dallas will host RNC committee members next week in its bid for the 2016 convention.
The Republican National Convention committee on Tuesday kicked off a week of host city-searching with a trip to Cleveland, the first of four stops. After Cleveland, committee members will make stops in Kansas City and Denver before rounding out the trip in Dallas late next week.

Dallas city officials, for their part, are working hard to promote the city to RNC officials.

Besides the obvious publicity a major national convention would bring to Dallas, city officials are drooling over the tourism revenue the convention would bring into the city -- by some accounts as much as $150 to $200 million dollars. And while Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has publicly expressed reservations about hosting the Democratic convention bid because of fundraising concerns, Dallas seems to have breezed by that roadblock. Sam Merten, former Observer staff writer and current mayoral spokesman, said this week that Dallas has already secured the $50 million needed to host the convention, all through private donations.

Yet city officials are scrambling to gain ground and improve their self-described status as underdogs. Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau CEO Phillip Jones told The Dallas Morning News that he considers Denver, which hosted the Democrats in 2008, the frontrunner.

But Dallas can woo with the best, and woo it will. Visitors Bureau VP Frank Librio said the RNC visit next week will center on the American Airlines Center, which would be the primary convention venue site, and AT&T Stadium, which could host lavish opening and closing events. A walking tour through Klyde Warren Park and the Arts District seem like locks; a brisket banquet at Pecan Lodge would probably seal the deal.

Jones' gloominess and the summer heat aside, Dallas is seen as a pretty sexy city to the GOP. With the creeping possibility that Texas could become a key battleground state, the GOP is eager to strengthen its influence in Texas. The bid website boasts that Dallas, with its diverse population, is an ideal city for reaching out to the critical Latino vote:

Dallas. Truly Traditional. Distinctly Diverse.
  • Dallas is critical to the Texas Red State economic success.
  • With 42 percent Hispanic, 28 percent Anglo and 25 percent African American residents according to the U.S. Census Bureau, Dallas is the ideal place for the Republican Party to continue the current outreach to growing and evolving segments of the population who will be critical in the 2016 election.
  • The Washington Post recently noted that Latinos in Texas are more Republican than elsewhere. And what's more, Latinos in Texas are also trending more toward the GOP and away from Democrats, in contrast to the rest of the country.

Local Democrats, predictably, said this week they would be thrilled to have conservative eyes fix their gaze on Dallas, because political theater is even better from the front row. (Local journalists would be inclined to agree.)

"Some of us will demonstrate outside the RNC, some will hold house parties to watch it on TV," said Taylor Holden, Executive Director of the Dallas County Democratic Party.. "The RNC typically stick their feet in their mouth at these events, so that's good for us."

The RNC should be cautious of TEA-types wanting to control the Republican party!

In the 2012 election, 71% of Texas Latinos voted for Obama;  93% of Texas African-Americans voted for Obama;  73% of Texas Asian-Americans voted for Obama.

That is some outreach the Republican Regressives have made.

Maybe the DO should get back to its roots.  You know, as an alternative newsrag.  Object and throw darts at the dominant political establishment and oppressive government.  Aim at the main magazine instead of decrying the advent of bicycle helmets, but only if a Democrat councilman objects to a dumbass ordinance.  Why focus like a laser on the party out of power when you got the low-hanging fruit?

Our government is spying on us.  The IRS has been sicced on the political opposition - the little people.  The President unilaterally traded five mass murderers for a traitor.  He's loosened their leadership back upon us and they will come.  It is the core leadership of madmen who have demonstrated they will incinerate not our military but us - the heart land.  Non-combatants.  Bin Laden said early on the enemy is us, not our government.  The President can blame Bush all he likes and unilaterally stand down, and declare a cessation of hostilities but I don't think these guys he let loose are amenable to such an opinion.  They are going to inflict a little terror on our asses.

Then we have "what difference does it make?"  Well lady, it makes a big difference and I hope you suffer the consequences of that ignorant retort before the rest of us do.

Then we have the back-breaking of the middle class and small business - the driver of the economy.  Half the kids are unemployed.  Anybody give a shit beyond their ideology?  no.  Just keep your mug stuck in your device.  Derive sustenance from a hashtag.

We have a wall of debt rolling toward us that now darkens the skies and if we do not do something about it, we will only yearn to be back in a French twilight.  This life can and and will get a LOT worse if we just continue to sit still.  We must turn the capital horses loose to run.

Millions of illegal immigrants are pouring in here for a reason.  Because Lucifer is right behind them.  And it ain't the Republicans.  It's the end result of the Observer's goofy thought process.  Best go anti anti establishment.

It's just a matter of timing now.

Some say they're all closeted queers, but regardless, I don't think Obama likes strip clubs any more than he will tolerate legal pornography or legal payday lenders, so he'll probably eventually shut down the titty bars too, maybe even breastaurants.

Choke point, there's more than one way to fundamentally change America.

@holmantx  This blog is now under the control right wingers.  I kept thinking it had be hijacked.  Yet while the pendulum use to swing left and right and back and forth, Joe Tone, Amy Silverstein and the powers that be have pushed the pendulum to the far right and are holding it there. I assume to keep because that is where they prefer to be.

This is far from an alternative blog.  The paper still retains a progressive vibe but Unfair Park is now more conservative than D Magazine.  I consider DMN alternative compared to local Drudge.  The Dallas Voice is progressive but predominately gay.

I am not sure where you would see anything about this blog that could be considered progressive, left leaning  or even slight pro-Dem.

They vacillate  between gay baiting, immigration baiting, or race baiting.   I assume you guys on Ruddski patrol should be beside yourself.  New "libtards" last les than a day.  If they don't get trashed by a commenters, Joe or Amy will come in to bitch slap them.

For a while, when I came back this last time, I couldn't figure out how this blog had totally turned but once I learned it came from the top, then there was nothing more to be done.

you, ruddski, doisdumdum Merkin and other should be proud  as pigs in shit as I have never seen, in all my blogging days, a group of men with a single agenda totally take over and already established blog and make this bitch your own.

Now that said, you should understand I am giving you a mega compliment  and am being serious as a heart attack.   Jack knows his place here when he post.  So there is no need to bring out the whipping sticks and start up any vile name calling......I waved the white towel a long time ago.

You guys have fun and take it to the limit...just leave my name out of it.   I know I am the biggest fool for using my real name, but it is just this thing I have about attaching my name to my opinions.

@TheRuddSki  Miami-Dade already has enough of a problem with "businesses" operating outside of or in the gray area of the law that when a venture capitalist-backed tech firm comes into town and tries to do it, they're just asking for trouble.

The county had earlier started fining app-based ride share Lyft's drivers more than $2,000 per ticket, but they're not playing around with ticketing anymore. The County has now impounded at least three vehicles operating through Lyft.

Lyft says it's a "peer-to-peer" ride sharing program that lets users hitch rides with authorized drivers for a "suggested donation." It started operating in the county over the Memorial Day weekend. Uber's similar service, UberX, officially rolled into town earlier this week.

But the county views the services as chauffeured car companies that are operating without proper licensing or within existing laws and regulations. So, according to the Miami Herald they impounded three Lyft vehicles during a sting operation on Wednesday and Thursday.

Mayor Carlos Gimenez has signaled that he'd like to see ride-sharing programs come to Miami, but he can't just ignore current law. He sent a letter to a Lyft lobbyist earlier this week pointing out that the county had the power to impound vehicles running afoul of hired-car laws.

Of course, if you're companies like Uber and Lyft with lots of venture capitalist money behind you, you can write off fines and impound costs as just another business expense.

Clearly unwilling to wait for things to work their ways through the legal channels at a regular pace, they've chosen instead to start operating illegally with the hopes of putting pressure on the county to speed things along.

You seem to get upset when people have a conversation that doesn't follow your ideology. Instead of complaining that speech is not of your liking, or not sufficiently controlled, why not offer a counter view?

There are blogs which strictly control the posts, will not allow alternative viewpoints and are regularly patrolled by moderators, why not just stay where you are protected from opinions you don't like?

Besides, there are sockpuppets running wild who express views identical to yours, making the same complaints, citing the same people that you don't like, they're helping to keep the balance of topical discussion/complaint of same.

But Here he is again, complaining about me and dropping my name, while the same sockpuppets are running wild with almost identical OT rants against the machine (that being the machine that took over this blog, which I evidently control to some degree).

You can get some insight into the fascist progressive mind here, how they prefer controls on speech - I'd wager that the JackJetts of the world applaud "choke point" and IRS abuses as good governance.

And, apparently, the controls JackJett demands do not apply to him.

This blog provides a happy playground without consequence for the throng that revels in the sneer, the smear, and the invective.  Why, they got game by merely invoking a few terms - Bush, TEA Party, conservative.  Game over!  I suppose it is lobbed out like a molotov cocktail.  But the bomb throwers are in charge now..

Then you show up and with a few words and all hell breaks loose.

And mass suicide ensues.  It's Jim Jones time.  What's up with that?

This is why I assert these morons know their fifteen minutes is about up.  The Left caught the bus but still has no idea why collectivism fails every time its tried.  It runs counter to human nature. They are swept up in their own private Ground Hog Day.

In the end we beat them with Levi 501 jeans. Seventy-two years of Communist indoctrination and propaganda was drowned out by a three-ounce Sony Walkman.
