Dallas Morning Show Host Storms Off the Set Over Michael Sam's Kiss

Categories: Media

It's a shame, really, that D Magazine didn't continue its morning show experiment. Not because we derived any pleasure from watching D: The Broadcast (we probably wouldn't have, but never say never) but because it would have been mildly wonderful to watch Wick Allison dance away from yesterday morning's Michael Sam bit.

As it is, D cut ties with the program back in August and the show continued as, simply, The Broadcast, meaning that co-host Amy Kushnir's tantrum over gay NFL draftee Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend will have to stand on its own without further allusions to our glossy media brethren.

That's fine, because Kushnir has no trouble letting us know how she really feels:

When parents do not have a choice about whether or not they want their children to see this, it is wrong...I don't call it a moment of celebration...It's being pushed in faces. I wanna say get a room. I don't want to see that. I don't want to see cake in your face, kissing each other.

Two of her three co-hosts, Lisa Pineiro and Courtney Kerr, call Kushnir out (Kerr says comments critical of Sam "are just as racist" as Clippers owner Donald Sterling's comments about racial minorities), thus prompting her to storm off the set in a huff.

Entertaining though Kushnir's outburst may have been, it was the third co-host, Suzie Humphreys, who offered the constitutional justification on her behalf.

"I'm shaking my head because people don't have a right to express how they feel if it offends somebody else," she says, perhaps unaware that she and Kushnir are doing exactly that on a live television broadcast. "I live in America! I still feel like I have the right to freedom of speech, and I don't have to be penalized for my opinions."

Send your story tips to the author, Eric Nicholson.

My apologies Amy, silly me, I just watched the full clip (not just the misleading selected parts shown on the TV shows) and I must say, the way you acted and what you said, I have no problem with. And you certainly didn't have a "tantrum" and "storm off the set." Good grief.

It's that Suzie Humphreys that's got a thorn in my butt NOW! hahaha you take care now girl. Good luck. Chow.

Gays have been with us as long as humans have been on this planet. It's about time they stood up for themselves for equal rights and I stand with them because every person on this planet deserves equal civil rights and equal human rights.

If your God is upset by this, it's your problem because the United States Constitution does not recognize your religion or the supremacy of your God.

As one of my gay friends says, "We're here! We're queer! Get used to it!

Aside from the topic which can be left to "opinion", Amy needs to be sent to "Midland" PERMANENTLY. She is weak & an embarrassment to women. She couldn't handle the heat of the conversation & her cry baby, unprofessional, stomping off the stage should have GOT HER FIRED! Maybe off camera she could find herself with the liberty of going to "Midland", but on camera?! Come on Amy, your LUCKY you still have a job! Make sure you kiss ass hard core at your current job, because I'm sure NO ONE will ever hire you at another station. She fell short in her freedom of speech, but practiced the freedom of being a cry baby. Go to Midland Amy!

If you look at the facebook pages of the people who spew hate against the Christian view you get a clear picture of sin and evil. These are worldly people who love sin and debauchery and hate anyone who threatens that love.  They love evil and hate good.  It is so very clear. Just take a look!

First of all, getting drafted into the NFL is absolutely a moment worth celebrating, but she is right to a certain extent, it was a headline grab for ESPN. No other 7th round pick had his name walked to the podium and announced with camera crews waiting in his home. With that in mind, it was also a cheap headline grab by Dale Hansen to come out with his stupid conspiracy theory about how far in the draft Michael Sam fell. ANYONE who pays attention to the Rookie Scouting Combine and/or the Senior Bowl knows that regardless of his status as SEC Defensive Player of the Year, Michael Sam performed horribly. Gay or not, comparatively small, weak, and slow does not a good NFL football player make. The Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year (Jackson Jeffcoat) didn't get drafted at all, so what do we make of that?

I have no problems with a liberal hosting TV talk shows.  Some are even good at it, and even handed.   But, I DO have a problem with stupid, poorly informed, and irrational liberals hosting shows, and expecting "normal" people to be politically correct, even though asked for their personal opinions and judgements.

Thank goodness for broadcast professionals like Suzie Humphreys who have their heads on straight, their moral compasses aligned with the Constitution, and respect for the opinions of others without adopting those opinions.

So if I follow kushnir's form a Christian morals it is admirable to hang all over half naked male strippers on morning TV and make sexual innuendo's but two men kissing celebrating an accomplishment is a sin?

Loved the woman who said 'this is America.  I have the right to offend anyone that I want'.

Any thought is getting that incorporated in the American flag.  Ever heard the phrase 'ugly American'?   But then again, this is Texas.

If you really want to represent the Christian community as loving people, expressing that much hatred for the world probably isn't the best way to do it.

@noblefurrtexas  Your antiquated and bigoted views on homosexuality are dying. "Normal" people, whatever that means, should not preach the marginalization of a group of people based on their sexual orientation. The world's too big for your small-minded views.

@DavidChristianWhile I agree with you about the Chippendale Dancers (most of which are gay) the difference is that the kiss seen round world was done and broadcasted during "family time" on television.

Thank goodness the Channel 8 show which falls into the patronizing suckup for viewers by putting sex on the air, is NOT broadcasted when there are likely children watching.

@hermancallenderiii I lived in the USA for 25 years and now live in Australia. I would love to take you on a world tour. You would be in a cage and the rest of the world can look at you.  The perfect example of someone who most people can't even believe exists - but they do - and mostly in Texas.  Ever heard the phrase 'the ugly American'?  Got a mirror?

@CogitoErgoSum @hynemc  If you want to call God's Word, Holy Scripture hate speech, then go ahead.  The Christian view of homosexuality is clearly expressed in scripture.  All I can say is repent.  It may sound trite but it is true. Christians follow the lead of Jesus Christ who does not hate the sinner but most assuredly hates the sin.  Sin is separation from God and only through repentance and surrender will you receive the love of God, which is an amazing love. I do wonder if you have eyes to see.  Is this lady in Dallas hateful because of what she said? Has this world turned that far upside down?  Is that your definition of hate?  You so-called tolerant people who attack anyone who does not agree with you are ill and in need of a Savior. Realize this and get off your donkey!

@noblefurrtexas @DavidChristian You make it sound like they were having sex on TV!! It was a small peck on the lips like one you would give your grandma. Turn on any cable TV show these days and you will see opposite sex couples grinding half naked and feeling each other up on camera. People need a reality check.

@noblefurrtexas @DavidChristian  Sorry, there are plenty of shows that depict same-sex affection on the air during "family time." Are you worried your kids will "catch the gay," if they see affection like this?

@hermancallenderiii  That was one of the best comments I have read on this subject.  Its against God and nature. Why are we supposed to support sin and their CHOICE of lifestyle. It is a CHOICE and a bad one. I dont want my grandkids raised to the belief it is ok to go against GOD.

@hynemc @CogitoErgoSum  "You cannot love someone and not let them know they are in serious trouble. So, I guess God gives me the right to judge sin."

Pardon me for saying so, but your brand of "love" smacks of the Fred Phelps/Westboro Baptist type of love. With "love" like that, who needs hate?

CogitoErgoSum
CogitoErgoSum topcommenter

@hynemc @CogitoErgoSum  Ah, the "No True Scotsman" fallacy. Sorry, but your quibbles with other Christians are not my problem. They believe they are just as much a Christian - if not more so - than you are. To say that your brand of Christianity is the only true version is complete, self-serving hogwash. Why is it that they understand it's not their place to judge others or force their beliefs on others, but you do not? I'll tell you why - because you are USING YOUR RELIGION to further your personal bigoted attitudes. In all likelihood, you believe - a priori of your spiritual beliefs - that homosexuality is disgusting, unnatural and morally wrong. The fact that you believe your religion affirms this personal distaste is just an example of a confirmation bias -- it only reinforces your personal feelings on the subject. You need to take a hard look at yourself and realize that I'm likely correct in this assumption.

Also, allow me to set you straight (no pun intended) on the matter of the Ten Commandments. They are, in fact, not at all the basis for our laws. If they were, where are the laws against coveting, blasphemy, lying, etc. The only commandments represented in our laws are stealing and killing. If you think people didn't know that stealing and killing were wrong before Moses supposedly brought down these tablets, I have some land to sell you on the moon. Further, where in these supposedly wonderful commandments is the basis for laws against rape, molestation, assault and slavery?

Our laws come to us from a long tradition with roots dating as far back as ancient Babylon, Greece and Rome. Please educate yourself on this topic -- and don't stop at reading just the good book.

@CogitoErgoSum  hynemc CogitoErgoSum

Real followers of Christ (not the fakes to which you refer) do not judge people but we do judge sinful behavior according to God's Word.  Sinful behavior leads to death and as we are commanded to love our neighbor, we have an issue with Spiritual death.  You cannot love someone and not let them know they are in serious trouble. So, I guess God gives me the right to judge sin.

How do I parade your righteousness around? When did I condemn others? Don't you know that the 10 Commandments are the basis of our laws?  I don't and won force my beliefs and judgments down anyone's throats. Those "millions of your fellow Christians" are not really Christians.  You cannot be a Christian if you do not love Christ and be obedient to God's Word.  Cannot be done. It's really simple.  Those people are obedient to the Word and accept the morality of the World and call themselves Christians.  It is amazing.  Wolves in sheep's clothing as Jesus warned.

CogitoErgoSum
CogitoErgoSum topcommenter

@hynemc @CogitoErgoSum  Surely. Is it not central to Christian religion that "judge not, lest ye be judged"? If so, what gives you the right to decide what is right for other people who are ostensibly consenting adults who love each other? You parade your self-righteousness around and condemn others for their behaviors, which have no bearing on how you decide to live your life. Further, this is a country in which religious belief has no bearing on our civil laws. You would, I assume, force your religious beliefs and judgments down the throats of millions of other who do not share said beliefs. As I said, millions of your fellow Christians already "get" this. Follow their lead. There, now go forth and sin no more.

@hynemc @CogitoErgoSum If you are so pro-Bible, why not rail over all those people that work on Sundays or those who have been married multiple times and have kids from various partners? Or how about those who are slothful or eat shellfish? Further, why do you care what gay people are doing and if they are sinners or not? Take care of your own life and leave everyone else alone. Clearly, you need to get a life.

CogitoErgoSum
