Brick-and-mortar retailers in Dallas beware. Amazon has you in its sights.

The e-commerce behemoth on Thursday announced that it has added Dallas to the list of a dozen cities eligible for same-day delivery. That means that if a customer orders any of the million-plus eligible products by 12:15 p.m., it'll be at her doorstep by 9 p.m. that night.

The process is, like everything Amazon does, straightforward. If you live in a qualifying zip code, you will see a "Get it Today" or "Get it Tomorrow" filter. Click it. Wait. In Dallas, same-day delivery will cost Amazon Prime members $5.99 for up to 150 pounds of goods, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Verge reports that same-day delivery got a soft rollout in Dallas earlier this year, but that Amazon didn't make the announcement until today.

Newsflash:  President seizes Amazon; places mail carriers union on board.

I hate Lone Star Overnight. They have no idea how to deliver to apartment complexes. You order at 10am on Monday and pay the fee for same day delivery. Despite your phone call and note requesting the package be left at your door, those bozos take it to the leasing office, which closes at 5p, because the leasing bimbos gotta get to happy hour. Then you get home at 7p from your real job (the reason you need stuff same-dayed to you in the first place) and realize you can't get your package from the locked office until 10am on Saturday, the next time they'll be open at an accessible hour.

Competing Google Labs is soon to announce their 'get it yesterday' offering as Google has already figured out what you are going to buy long before you hit that purchase button.

It has almost been a month (April 4th) since I first used this shipping option.  I ordered at exactly 12:03 PM and received my item via LSO at about 6:15 PM.

I ordered something thru Amazon this week, and tried their Amazon Prime to get the free next day shipping. Lone Star Overnight was the courier who delivered to my address.

There was an option to pick up the item at "Amazon Locker", whatever the F that is. There are a handful of these in Uptown (some at 7-11, one at Albertson's on McKinney), then another in Frisco. I'm okay with sending a delivery truck, thank you Amazon.

Oh crap! that drone I shot down must have been those 'Glee' dvd's I ordered this morning.

I've used it a couple of weeks ago in Uptown. They delivery late in the day and use Lone Star Overnight which I'm seeing more often in Uptown I guess from Amazon deliveries, in creepy unmarked white panel vans.

Well, at least Walmart doesn't have to be the only hated Bigass retail entity in town anymore.

Just a wild guess, Sanders, but I'll bet people who frequent this blog consider announcement of Amazon one-day service much more important than, say, your announcement that you've discovered a way to walk to the moon.

@Useless_service My apartment complex offers that same service.  Frankly, I'm much happier having the leasing office hold onto my package than have it sitting outside all day long waiting for one of a gazillion neighbors or passers-by to steal it.  Besides, they don't know if that phone call or note is really from you or some random person trying to steal your package.  You should be thankful you live where your leasing office cares about you.

That costs $3.00 extra.

@gabbahey  Those lockers are awesome for apartment dwellers, especially  in sketchier areas. I lived in a few apartments in my 20's where anything left by a UPS driver at my front door would have been stolen before the truck pulled away.

WM is working on the same delivery option, they actually would have a little easier time with it due to all those big warehouses (they call them "SuperCenters" ..) they operate around town.

Also, Amazon is working on their own delivery system, what they call "the last mile". The issues with UPS and FedEX last XMas said to them they need to control their own delivery and not leave it to others to screw up.

Amazon will also roll out a home grocery delivery for DFW in the near future.

yes, retail is changing before our eyes....

@AdamsonScott @Useless_serviceThat's terrible. My old complex had great big lockers next to the mail boxes and packages went in there; the key went in your mailbox.

Considering this was the same place that couldn't fix a broken showerhead within a week's time, it's weird that any more "advanced" place couldn't offer similar "box" technology.

@mavdog  Weren't the home delivery grocery services among the first to fail in the dot com bust back in the 90's?

That which costs little is less valued. - Miguel de Cervantes.

Freedom and individual liberty cost most Boomers nothing.  They were the beneficiaries of those who paid the freight.  It follows that most Americans do not know nor care, really, what they forfeit in the claim on instant gratification.

Hollywood should just worldwide release a WWII type win-the-war propaganda film on a scale with Gone With The Wind . . . with the Prophet getting hosed by Sylvester Stallone.

Have you noticed that Carney has started to adopt President Obama's speech patterns, gestures and mannerisms?

Carney will never be able to adopt the Negro patois that so impressed the crusty old coot senator from Nevada, even if he wanted to.

So.... why were the Republicans not interested in the 13 attacks on American embassies, causing 100 deaths, during the Bush administration?

They were. So were the Democrats. Both parties were on board with invading two Muslim countries.

But, Bush kind of screwed up by not blaming Americans for Muslim attacks, or arresting anyone who dared diss the prophet. This is why they hate us.

We didn't get to this point without an awful lot of help - the nuclear family was in trouble long before we ever started arguing about the birth-cert of the "current occupant".

I truly worry for the country when I see such flippant regard over the fate of the nation.

I really do.

No country has ever survived such loose fiscal policy to sup[port redistribution of wealth and income.  No country has ever survived allowing millions in to perform labor while millions sit in idleness.  And no country has ever survived after destroying the family unit.

I read that there's trouble in my gal Wendy's Texas campaign, BTW.

As for dem candidates, all the possibilities are older than dirt, even the Indian gal.

And yeah, there will be investigations (finally), but there will be a backlog considering the "Chicago" nature of this admin, dating back to campaign contributions for run #1. Dirty, dirty, dirty.

But, the real question is - will the real power, media, turn on the god they created?

I'm wondering how the GOP will manage to engineer a loss of what should be a slam-dunk election. Maybe they'll run The Maverick again?

That guy would not have been jailed for a year had the Administration not falsely accused him of fomenting a movie review gone horribly wrong.

If the Senate falls to the Republicans, that will clear the way for investigations with subpoena power, and Twister will be the target of it.

Just as she's up for the Prez slot.

This is what the Left fears.

TheRuddSki

Dude, who can remember what emails Congress demands, and where the President was sleeping as Muslims gang-critiqued a video?

What matters, at this point, is that our prez acted swiftly, arresting the errant filmmaker who dissed the prophet (pbuh). That fulfilled the promise made to track down the killers and administer justice. The debate is over

As an aside, I hope Jay Carney writes one of the many books which will come out of this admin, whatever they're paying him, it ain't enough.

I miss Tony Snow. Now, let the flames commence!

@lolotehe @AdamsonScott@Useless_serviceYou think that's "advanced"?  You want your parcel sitting in a metal box all day when it's 105 degrees out?  Or 18 degrees in winter?  Anything sensitive to excessive heat or cold would be destroyed.  I far prefer having it kept in the temperature-controlled leasing office where it will be carefully watched and kept safe.

yes, Webvan and the like failed.

Why?

One, the public wasn't as "digitized" then, today there is a 2x increase in the % of the public online. Just think about that phone you likely carry...back then zero phones could use the net. now 3 out of 4 people have smartphones.

two, the public trusts online buying today more than back then.

the key to online grocery is the ability to put the preferred product in the hands of the customer. how do you want your banana? ripe or all yellow? that avocado soft or hard?

the vendors are figuring this out. traditional grocers should be concerned.
