In Grapevine, a Record-Setting Chalk Portrait of Jesus' Face

Two thousand years ago, give or take, the Romans nailed Jesus to a cross and left him to die. Since then, he has become the centerpiece of one of the world's dominant religions, revered by billions, inspiring wars and reconciliations and serving as a muse for innumerable works, both quotidian and profound.

Somehow, during all that time, no one ever thought to chalk the Son of God's face across a 17,000-square-foot expanse of parking lot. Lucky for humanity that Ed Young, the sex-loving, attention-seeking pastor of Grapevine's Fellowship Church, noticed the oversight and took steps to address it.

On Wednesday morning, dozens of volunteers armed with 6,700 pieces of chalk and 125 bags of charcoal descended on the Fellowship Church parking lot. By evening, their masterpiece was finished.

"Honestly, I think it speaks to people," church member Roger Moreno told NBC 5, adding that the chalk Jesus "actually shows that we actually still care and [are] trying to make a difference in somebody's life."

I dig it. Though I prefer Asian Jesus myself.

Can you imagine following this cat - a very dour, pensive, homeless hippy - to eternal life? No wonder he's so sad...he has to hang around church people all the time.

Actually, kinda looks like it was done in the George Bush style

That's Jesus?

I think I saw him last weekend at the Power Trip concert at Club Dada. He looked like he was really enjoying the show.

Great depiction. People working together to create art and the good news is rare nowadays. Usually the are busy building themselves up

I'd heard that there was some good acid in Dallas last week.

and certainly this couldn't be seen as a case of Ed Young "building [himself] up" ...nah.

A17,000 square ft Jesus is news when a 131 ft. Pizza and a 41/2 ft meatball hold world records.

A cursory google search shows there is no previous record for a chalk Jesus, so yeah, BIG news.

It would have been better had it spontaneously appeared, as happens with images on toast, or tree bark, etc. think of the tourist boon to Grapevine!

Well, not democrats, once a democrat's term is over he just won't go away, especially if his successor is a republican - gotta be out there second-guessing and whatnot.

@mavdog

you made a funny, if unoriginal comment, I responded with one in the same vein, you saw not like humor, but sensed hostility which caused you to make an assessment concerning my lack of satirical awareness, which, ironically, exhibited a lack of satirical awareness.

Your urge to growl is somewhat pronounced.

@ruddski

That's classic, you respond with "thinking the same" and then close with a comment about my perceived "lack..of original thought".

It's the staid "I know you are.." response.

Well done! Such good work on your part.

I don't know anyone personally who has claimed to have seen Jesus, at a nightclub.

If I did, I would have assumed he'd been ingesting something... Interesting.

@TheCredibleHulk @fourwayenterprises There really isn't a reason.That would mean mans logical facts. Which have been questioned since existence. Faith can not exist in fact. Soooo if your right, nothing lost. If I'm right. everything is lost. I am concerned with anyone who has not found the joy and love in Christ. That is what you find in faith.

@TheCredibleHulk @fourwayenterprises You seem bent to interpret my statement of depiction to a statement of actuality. I nor anyone else knows what he looked like in this day and time. It is not a photograph. If you are trying to find out if I believe in Jesus Christ as my savior and redeemer. I DO. I'm sorrowed if you don't

This "depiction" of Jesus is pure fantasy - an Anglicized representation of an ancient historical figure that matches the ideal that was planted in your head as a child.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but let's call it what it is. There's enough denial already associated with religion that we certainly don't need any more.

@TheCredibleHulk @fourwayenterprises   The word depiction has no relation to fiction. It does however quality for representation in a two dimensional form.

@TheCredibleHulk I doubt seriously that a Kodak moment was available in the first century. Anymore than we have a accurate picture of Buddha, Confucius, or Herod etc. I don't believe we are striving for "a factual portrayal" I commend their effort.

I'll grant you a passing resemblance to the image found upon the Shroud of Turin, but there is no consensus that that image is in fact the image of the historical Jesus Christ.
