Gun Barrel City's Lone Gay Bar Was Targeted By Police, But Maybe Not Because it Was Gay

Categories: News

GarlowsGunBarrelCity.JPG
Saturday, April 5, was drag night at Garlow's, Gun Barrel City's one and only gay bar. It also happened to be the night when a half dozen or so of Gun Barrel City's finest showed up in the parking lot and began pulling over departing patrons for failing to use their turn signals.

"Basically, all that was was a fishing trip to see who's been drinking and who hasn't," bar owner Michael Slingerland tells Unfair Park, saying the bust was the culmination of a couple of months of a lighter police presence.

Gun Barrel City Police Chief Damon Boswell has not returned a call seeking comment, but Lone Star Q reports that four drivers were arrested for driving while intoxicated.

Slingerland himself, who says he'd "had some beers" but wasn't staggering or visibly drunk, opted to walk the quarter-mile to his house. Police arrested him anyway, for public intoxication. He was released from jail the next morning after paying a $352 fine.

None of Gun Barrel City's four other bars have been similarly targeted, according to former Dallas Voice reporter David Webb, therefore Garlow's must have been targeted because it's a gay bar, right?

Not so, Slingerland says. Gun Barrel City has had a gay bar for 22 years without incident. Garlow's is an established part of the community. Slingerland and Mayor Paul Eaton are close friends; he even donated $1,000 to his election campaign.

Nope, Garlow's was targeted because "we're the number one bar. We attract everybody."

That doesn't make the arrests any more palatable to Slingerland, who explained his feelings in a meeting with Boswell last week: "That's fishing motherfucker. You can't do that shit."

Judging by the absence of police cars over the weekend and Eaton's apologetic comments to Webb, the message got through.

Send your story tips to the author, Eric Nicholson.

It is not illegal to not signal when leaving a parking lot onto a road- you simply have to stop first--there is no requirement to signal.

I lived in GBC for 15 years, and this kind of thing has been going on there forever. Arrests for PI, getting pulled over for burned out license plate lights, or just because they want to. Small town cops with nothing better to do, Basically it's about generating revenue. GBC has no property tax and depends entirely on sales tax for operating revenue so they're always looking for creative ways to raise money.

Years ago I was shocked, and pleasantly so, to discover there was a gay bar in town, and I never knew there to be any problems with that place. Small towns can be very quirky places, but all the same I'm thrilled I don't live there any more.

of course it wasn't because it was a bar full of fanukes....other than fanukes and rug munchers, who would ever wanna go into a disgusting place like that?

All lies!!! It was because it's a Gay bar in a Hick town! Garlows isn't even off the main road. It's 100% illegal and those small town cops in Malakoff, Caney City, Log Cabin and Gun Barrel get away with everything with no punishment at all. Crooked cops!

I was pulled over the other weekend for not a tail or headlight out mind you, but get this,  A license plate light out.  One of two tiny little lights that illuminates the license plate, which was still very visible. Luckily i had only had 2 drinks, but he was obviously fishing!

Yikes!  What a bleak looking location; and that dump of a building.  It's certainly not Chelsea, my dears.

@pak152  They pronounce GBC as "Gay Barrel City", Located on "Speeder Creek Lake" and that is because of the high percentage of meth users. Contrary to what the police and others may tell you that "its getting better" is either a lie or the people started looking a different direction  as to say "If it ain't in sight, then it don't exist". Well in reality it just moved to another lake community..

notmadeomoney

@pak152  You have probably neveeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr been there if you are unaware that GBC is one of many towns making up a rather heavily populated lakefront resort region.

@tracer15sniper WRONG!!! Texas Law states under

Texas Transportation Code - Section 545.104. Signaling Turns; Use Of Turn Signals-

545.104. Signaling Turns;  Use of Turn Signals.  (a) An operator shall use the signal authorized by Section 545.106 to indicate an intention to turn, change lanes, or start from a parked position. Notice the period, Now that you have told us that you are ignorant of Texas driving laws and obviously haven't driven for more than 10 years, please just cut up your license and keep the rest of us safe.

Garlows is located at

308 E Main St, Gun Barrel City, TX 75156 mmmmm this seems like a main rd "Main Street isn't that the "main" road that is in every small town. So it is the main street. Don't lie just tell the truth

If you had at least one light illuminating your license plate, your are meeting the state requirements.  The cop did not have probable cause to pull you over.

Hell, It's not even Shepherd's Bush. It's certainly not Newham or Waltham Forest, where the Muslims frown on both liqueur and Gays. Drunk gays usually get the gay beat right out of 'em, and women get raped a lot.

But, we all must respect Muslim cultural imperatives, musn't we?

@dkbeads @tracer15sniper    Actually you are wrong.  Everything you quoted only applies to public roadways.  You don't have to signal when exiting private property.  Not calling you ignorant like you did to the other poster, but...

Have you ever been to Garlowse? If you have then you would've probably understood what I was saying. Sorry I didn't put it in Redneck Terms! "it's located in a pack of fucking trees with a dirt parking lot. It's not like it's in the middle of town next to the trailer park wal-mart"... And what does meth labs have to do with anything?!?!? The cops were targeting a Gay bar.

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul @anonoman doesnt matter, Ive had the same thing happen.  Was in NRH, cop was in a gas station lot, as I passed he pulled out and pulled me over.  Told me one of my license plate lights was out, asked what I had been doing and where I was headed and told me to go get a new light right then or else Id be pulled over again that night.  I had had a few drinks but it was definitely a fishing expedition.

@jonathandbutts  If you have a problem with the GBC police why don't you just tell them they are breaking your 4th amendment of the U.S. Constitution but be sure you memorize it.

dkbeads

@jonathandbutts  I'm sorry I see you're one of the "rednecks" that was probably born and raise here in the butthole of Texas. The fact is the writer said ""GBC must have a huuuuuuge homosexual community to support a homosexual bar considering the total population is less than 6,000"". Meaning he was completely unaware of GBC. I was just giving him the facts in case he wanted to move to the Butthole of Texas. Where the water is muddy brown like crap in a toilet, the bridges that cross the lake with the exception of the new ones are only 10 feet above the water and the police dept is probably about as crooked as you could get in any E. Texas town.

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul @anonoman  Oh yeah one other thing there is no laws stating how many lights you must have on your license plate only that it be seen from 50 feet thats all.

Just because a policeman pulls you over for a stop doesn't mean that he has probable cause.

See TTC Section 547.322 (f) & (g)

http://law.onecle.com/texas/transportation/547.322.00.html

If you were to be issued a citation because one of two lamps was burned out, I feel certain that you could get the citation and anything else associated with the stop tossed.  Many cars come with only one license plate lamp.

The same way you managed to work in Chelsea, my dear - assuming you were referring to The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, where I used to live (Pelham Crescent).

Which, incidentally, has managed to avoid becoming part of Londonistan, thankfully.

I only mention it to remind you, once again, of the plight of Ayaan Hirsi Ali, because of your assumed support for women's rights, and your assumed disgust with the actions of Brandeis University in that regard - you being Jewish and considering that institution's Jewish roots.

The cadence is off, as is the grammar. It should read:

"People go there to drink liquor and beer

not to drink in the atmosphere"
