DISD Brings in Consultant to Tell Mike Miles, School Board How to Get Along

JonathanSchickDISD.jpg

Now that the bogeyman of home rule has transformed some of Dallas ISD Superintendent Mike Miles' fiercest outside critics into his ardent supporters, the time seems ripe to formally mend fences with the school board.

Easier said than done. Though things have calmed in recent months, Miles' relationship with his nine bosses has been fractious, to say the least. They nearly ran him out of town last fall, and some have actively worked to undermine him.

To help, DISD is bringing in Jonathan Schick, a consultant specializing in nonprofit governance, specifically on building an effective working relationship between CEOs and their boards, for a team-building exercise on Tuesday.

Such retreats are pretty standard, but Schick's "six principles of successful board/CEO partnerships" reads like a rebuke to, oh, a significant portion of the DISD board.

For example:

Effective nonprofit boards empower their CEOs to run their agencies. In other words, board members establish the desired outcomes while enabling the CEO to determine the methods. The board neither micromanages nor rubber stamps. Rather, successful boards spend their time focusing on fundamental issues and major policy decisions.

And:

A board that ethically governs makes it known that the CEO is responsible only to the unified board. Thus, the CEO is not faced with the political pressure of fielding the special interests of individual trustees.

And:

The board views the CEO's role as similar to one of a corporate executive; thus, all accountability rests upon the CEO alone. For instance, the board would not hold the marketing director answerable for low event turnout; the CEO alone is responsible to the board.

This should solve everything.

One problem, Miles is not a CEO, and DISD is not a corporation - yet.  That's where Miles and Rawlings are trying to lead this.

SCHTICK  Yiddish slang meaning "gimmick" that has come to mean "someone's signature behavior."

Maybe he'll improve the quality of the political entertainment

Perhaps the BOT should have thoroughly investigated Miles before hiring him. The entire thing was too hasty IMO. His experience in a district of 8,000 students hardly qualified him.

They also should have realized he is NOT a collaborative leader---but a "my way or the highway" kind of guy. They should have known he was incapable of inspiring.

Seems appropriate - they're about to get a good shave.

Miles' most brilliant move was hiring a Houston billionaire to fake a takeover of the Dallas school system.  The man has skillz.

The board, if able to, will vote to can him in about two weeks, he'll walk away with a nice chunk of change for doing essentially nothing, and life as Dallas knows it will go on.

If people had thought that way, we wouldn't have had the enormously popular health care act.

@TheRuddSki Life in Dallas goes on....and without you.   Now please share with me where you live.  It is only fair that we be able to comment on the state of your state.

@TheRuddSki  I am curious Rudd ... now that I know that you don't live here ... and possibly Myrna as well .... why do you even bother commenting on events in a place where you don't even live? I mean ... kibitzing is one thing. But how do you know about "life in Dallas"? Your comments are usually well written and show some sort of thinking behind it, even if agreement is not always to be found. But I live here ... you don't. Why dabble so often in a pond that is not part of your geography?

I guess I worked under the illusion (and now I see a delusion) that the active commenters on this board were locals. Now I wonder.

And no disrespect is meant ... fire away away with your comments. You seem to be one of the few to keep Myrna on her toes. And certainly, this is a free country ... post away wherever and whenever .... I was simply just curious.

Actually, the DEMS wanted single payer but gave in to the Romney plan, which is ACA. The GOP loved the plan until the DEMS proposed it; then they hated it. And so it goes. . . . .

Post under your own name, Jack, and you can have my street address, my cell phone number and a nice color portrait.

No disrespect taken

The reason I comment here is because I have been ever since I did live in Texas for about 25-odd years, cumulatively, about 15 years working in Dallas agency/studio scene.

And I like the locals.

The irony of it all is, LOOK is a persona created to rant about one, singular, specific issue at the exclusion of any other topic on the blog.

I love irony.

@Look at me, Yes, I quickly surmised that the "rant from nowhere" is very much a

part of blogs since 2009. We've already had the Obamacare rant; Benghazi is

probably waiting in the wings. i suppose we could offer up all the Bain Capital

stories, but what's the point? Romney already lost. Enough said.

LOOK-at-MeRuddSki

@mindingthestore He doesn't really care about the topic at hand.  If he sniffs you might be a Democrat, he has this need to go on another Obama rant.   The topic could be swimming pools and his response would be about Benghazi or Obamacare.

My points were factual and relevant to the comment I replied to. And my reply to you was factual. and relevant to your comment.

Your reference to Limbaugh? Wrong. When you're stumped, you're supposed to invoke FOX.

My comment on the consultant is on record, but having to explain to wannabe blog bosses the rules of life seems to take an inordinate effort.

I see you ignore my factual points in order to hijack the conversation. The original

topic was about the consultant for DISD and board. You chose to go off on an Obama rant.

Why don't you just call Rush? He's more your speed: unable to deal with facts that call into question your agenda.

Good luck to the consultant's working with Miles and BOT.

And Obama was against stuff before he was for it, and, well, he lied to his supporters and they're unhappy with that and the law, so he mocked them and effectively told Americans unhappy with the law to STFU. So it goes...

Ruddski is the self-appointed Myrna foil.

You flatter yourself, I disagree with your points when I disagree with your points, just like I do with anyone else. I've even agreed with some points (few) and "liked" a couple of your posts, and when warranted, have complimented your sense of humor and/or a clever flame.

OTOH, there is a single-purpose self-appointed persona created by someone who seems to pop-up into our exchanges with such suspicious regularity, that it would appear to be your sock-puppet, but I'm quite certain it's not you. However, his devotion to protecting you and his writing style and complaints leads me to believe he is a poster who appears here semi-regularly, and he considers himself "one of the gals".

If all goes to plan, then you won't hear them from Bucky, for the same reasons you can't get the juicy details from his accomplice of years ago because, among other considerations to avoid further complications from actionable actions, said accomplice cannot post to the internet in any way which mentions my name, children's names, pets names, any damn reference at all.

After what that poor "anonymous" loser went through, I think he swore off the net forever. Cost him a fucking bundle in the end, just to lose.

@bvckvs Hey bucky, why did you change your name from Sanders Kaufman to Bvckvs here?

TheRuddSki
TheRuddSki topcommenter

@bvckvs

Not a word of what you state is factual, other than my name, which you did not "dig up", as I myself posted it.

This is the second time you have slandered me in this forum. My lawyer - the one that nailed your friend - advised me to not pursue you legally because you had not slandered me by name, and that given your history (which is quite available, and researched by her), you would eventually hang yourself, which you just did, Sanders Kaufmann.

My lawyer also, on researching your ubiquitous history, opined that your claimed bout with meningitis which "caused your brain to go koo-koo" was legitimate, and your constant messaging on twitter and Facebook to non-existant accounts, your physical threats against me, your accusations of property crimes and other issues indicated certain mental issues which caused her to ask "do you really want to go after this poor sonofabitch?"

I said no, Sanders Kaufmann is just a harmless, proved loser in life, and the squashing of your psychotic stalker friends was enough - that you were just "me-too" weak-minded opportunist.

Now, with this post, you now face the process of "discovery" concerning your actionable claims, of which I count two. That means you have to prove your allegations - we both know you can't.

Considering that my lawyer has already compiled required materials, all I need do is submit this post, and I'm done.

I suggest you contact a lawyer posthaste, and prepare to engage the laborious and expensive process of retrieving materials to substantiate your claims, which you cannot, because they are false.

I would say "see you in court", but if my history with your type is indicative, that won't be necessary, because I have you nailed

@bvckvs So he does have a human name.  Steve.   I assumed he lived here for a long time and when I found out he didn't ..his insanity seemed a bit more insane.   I am curious if he post on other Village Voice blogs under different names.   I have never seen one person hijack a blog and use it as his toilet.

And sadly I get the feeling he is here to stay even though the amount of people he has that have left because of his incessant spewing is sad.

And this bit about you threatening and slandering him is another example of dishing it out but unable to take it.   He suddenly becomes a graduate of The Sarah Palin University of Victimization.

Do you know what other blogs Steve post on?   Do we know what State he lives in?   I think that all his comments should be prefaced with .....NOT LOCAL.

The reason I like you Bucky is because you've threatened me, accused me of crime, slandered me, and joyfully participated in the online stalking of my family - most particularly my youngest daughter at the time - without giving a gnat's thought about the moral or legal implications of your stupidity. Your little buddies you palled with, to their benefit, did - which is why you do not see them online.

Besides, you have such an interesting resume and online history, and I like train wrecks.
