Craig James, Fired From Sports, Becomes Fulltime Mouthpiece for the Religious Right

Craig James, the former SMU football star and Senate candidate whose retrograde views on homosexuality, litigiousness and overall mediocrity have made him unemployable as a football analyst, has fallen into a new career as a mouthpiece for the religious right.

The Family Research Council, labeled by the Southern Poverty Law Center as an anti-gay hate group, has hired James as an assistant to president Tony Perkins.

James will do some lobbying, some speaking and occasional work hosting the "Washington Watch Live" radio program, per the Houston Chronicle. In the words of the FRC, he will "cultivate relationships with like-minded Americans across the country who share a common concern for the growing hostility toward free speech and religious liberty in the U.S."

James seems to have landed his new gig largely because, on his abrupt dismissal from Fox Sports Southwest last year, he said he was an outspoken Christian. The religious right has improbably spun this into a tale of religious persecution, a charge FRC makes several times in announcing James' hire.

In a statement, Perkins says James' experience of discrimination makes him specially qualified to "rais[e] awareness about the threats to our most precious liberty -- the freedom of religion.

"Craig has experienced the very workplace disqualification that cultural elites are seeking to impose throughout the country: expressing a politically incorrect opinion on a cultural issue, totally unconnected to employment, is enough to get you fired."

Meanwhile, James continues to pursue his discrimination complaint with the Texas Workforce Commission and deny that he killed five hookers at SMU.

IOW, he now gets paid to publicly be a bigot.

Hearing how Craig has overcome his persecution is enough to make you join hands with five dead hookers and sing "Kumbaya."

James is so spoiled and entitled that he just can't accept that he was fired because he sucked as a sportscaster and was such an arrogant jerk at ESPN that viewers hated him.  He has do blame "religious bigotry" for the fact that no network wil hire him.  Before he left ESPN and made those campaign comments, ESPN admitted that James had the highest negative ratings of any of its on air personel.

If Craig James is a mouthpiece for the religious right, does that make Eric Nicholson a codpiece for the irreligious left?

Craig James is what I hate about this area......he's so smug, always right, religious right-good gravy, does he put his pants on a different way from the rest of us?   And I didn't take money from SMU boosters, sending the school into the sports abyss.  Also, I didn't kill a bunch of hookers!

More people have died in the cause of raising awareness than all other causes combined. Most ppl don't know that.

Let's check in with Mike Leach about Craig James' efforts on fair employment practices.

I am assuming that since he has a joined a right wing religious foundation that he will be caught in flagrante with a person not his wife within the next two weeks?

It is amusing that the FRiC sees this as religious discrimination, the firing or refusal of service to people who don't espouse your religio-political beliefs.

Didn't they just get up in arms that Christian business owners should be able to refuse service to gays?

"cultivate relationships with like-minded Americans across the country who share a common concern for the growing hostility toward free speech and religious liberty in the U.S."  - what, 3 people?  And they really need to separate their argument into free speech or religious liberty, since the only speech they want to be free is religious speech that dovetails nicely with their own doctrine.

This really is a perfect match though, since the audience for both seems to be dwindling rapidly.

America is experiencing an “absolute destruction of our military readiness and our military morale because the leadership in our military has not been willing to stand up to the President” on issues like the 2010 repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. ---Jerry Boykin, VP Family Research Council

Uh, okay....

What about the religious freedoms of those 5 hookers killed by Craig James?

Now this is embarrassing. The oft-cited Voot Foundation has certified both the Family Research Council and the Southern Poverty Law Center as Trusted Sources of authentic Southern Moon Pies, and people oft cite our recommendations. I'm really gonna have to get these two to kiss and make up.

Hasn't the FBI dropped the SPLC as a resource?

@roo_ster

I'd rather be a codpiece for the irreligious left than a hairpiece for Donald Trump.

@Greg820 Probably not one, but five professional women.  They probably won't be alive, either.

He should personalize that on his license plate.

Whew, thought you had become a self-fulfilling prophecy. But I'd watch my back if I were you.
