America Discovers That Cowboys Stadium Is a Terrible Place for a Basketball Game

@FinalFour
Those of you who listened to Friday's Final Four games on the radio were forced to endure not only a complete lack of moving images but also sportscaster Jim Gray's brief but remarkably inane sideline interview with Jerry Jones, in which the Cowboys' owner noted approvingly that AT&T Stadium's TV screen is in fact larger than the basketball court, and that it gives fans a chance to see what basketball looks like when the players are 70 feet tall.

That's the positive way to spin it. It would have been more honest if Jones joined the chorus and described AT&T Stadium for what it is: a terrible basketball venue.

The Dallas Morning News is now simply reporting this as fact:

Yes, the Final Fours are now all being played in football stadiums and none are ideal for basketball. But Jerry World has to be the worst. Folks in the upper bowl are so far away from the action that they have to watch the majority of the game on the big screen. And I get it, it's a nice big screen. But spending hundreds of dollars on tickets, parking and food clearly offset the price of watching basketball on a $40 million TV.

Soon, America had reached the same conclusion. Like CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd:

And Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel:

And ESPN's Mike Humes:

And so on. Fox Sports sought out and found the "worst Final Four seat at AT&T Stadium," which was occupied by a guy from Missouri named Dan Schwabe, who predicted that "from a fan perspective, it's going to go down as the worst Final Four ever."

Not that the NCAA is overly concerned with the "fan perspective," so long as it can keep packing in record-setting crowds and ink mammoth TV deals. More piercing was another critique, voiced most forcefully by Thamel:

Nobody enjoys trekking to Arlington. Especially when the hotels and associated festivities are centered in Dallas or Fort Worth. This isn't just an urbanist's lament. The Star-Telegram reports that the lack of walkability and easy public transport could jeopardize AT&T Stadium's quest for the 2017 Final Four.

Agreed it might not be a great place to see a basketball game - but what exactly were people expecting with 80K people?  An intimate setting?

I just got to my seat in the nose bleeds about ten minutes ago, and found out the game was over. Guess I need better seats next time.

There are just enough Jonsiefools out there to fill up Jerryworld for basketball, a lousy pro football team and other micro-venues as seen from the rafters. The best thing going for Jerry in the stadium is that he has plenty of open dates to book events - especially during the NFL playoff season!

Game of Thrones would be awesome on the Jerryworld TV, though.

Didn't it set an attendance record?

And, so, the CMA's will be there next year. That will be a huge mess.

Its not much better for watching a football game. All those flashing lights, the over pumped sound system...the giant video boards...I always leave with a headache. it is amazing that the Cowboys can focus on the "game" with all that distraction...well, apparently they can't...because the team has a dismal home record.

I stayed home to not watch the games, instead of paying $$$ and facing the trek to not watch the game live.

If the ticket-buyers weren't getting what they wanted, why do they keep buying the tickets year after year? There are exactly zero surprises in what buying the ticket and attending delivers.

You know, I saw a concert here, its not a great stadium for that either!  Is there anything its good for, besides making Jerry more money?

If there's one thing sports journalists can do really, really well - it's whining.

Yes there was sportsing going on in the area this weekend.  Both teams sports very hard and one team outsports the other team.  The head coach of the losing team said that they just couldn't sports as well as the other team had sportsed even though his team sportsed very hard.  He said that they will go back to their home field and work on sportsing so that hopefully they will be able to sports better than the other teams

@lebowski300  exactly right.  I bought seats last year to the sweet 16 in the 200's they weren't great but I knew that going and still bought them.  Fortunately, I had a decent sight line and enjoyed myself until Michigan hit a 3 to be KU

Nope, many will stay to enjoy the Arlington area's popular area actions, like Ft Worth and perhaps Dalworthington Gardens.

@trekatch I saw U2 there. First row behind the stage. $35 from Ticketraper on the day of the show. With video and our own speaker system set up for that short end of the stadium it turned out to be one of the best shows I ever saw. Now those that paid $200-$500 may have a different recollection.

@trekatch the stadium is good for keeping the rich seperate from the poor (here poor is a relative term)

@trekatch I saw a Monster Truck show there, and sat in the upper deck, and it as about perfect. I'd hate to watch anything else there, though.

@trekatch  thats pretty much the idea for any arena/stadium.  But you know what else makes Jerry World suck, the apathetic fans who fill that thing 8 times a year for Cowgirl games

@TheRuddSki  It was amazing to see the credentialed i.e. (getting paid to be there, didnt pay for their tickets) bitch about seating on twitter.  Really, Newy and the other media, go fuck yourselves.  People paid upwards of $600-$800 to sit in the last few rows and were happy to be there and he post he whining to Twitter

@monogodo @trekatch

The HS football championships are a good deal. You can get a good seat for cheap.

I usually go out there for the smaller schools' games because they usually run the finesse offenses well that you never see anymore (veer, wing-T, etc.).

@ScottsMerkin @TheRuddSki  Well, he gets to be there if there are 80,000 fans or 20,000 fans.  So to him, all that matters is the experience.

To the 60,000 people who got to say they went to the game who wouldn't have been able to say the same thing if it were held in Madison Square Garden, it might be worth a couple hundred just to they they were there (even if the viewing experience wasn't great).  Not a great experience if you want to watch the game, but an experience nonetheless if you just want to be there and celebrate every call with the other crazies.

@ScottsMerkin

Absolutely. I used to cover skiing and tennis. Practically everything - booze, food, lift tickets, seating - is gratis, but if the beer was too warm, food too cold, lift too slow, slopes too icy, stadium too hot - that's what the topic of conversation was.

Once, ABC guy told me I couldn't be slope side for a Downhill race, since they had "exclusive coverage" LOL. Stuff it.

International photogs are worse than Americans - bitch, moan, whine and push,push,push. If ever people deserved a sound thrashing, it's these jokers.

@ScottsMerkin @ozonelarrybThey won't pay them early as that's cheap money.  Further, I think that Jerry gets to keep some of sales tax, perhaps Wylie or someone has more details.

ScottsMerkin
ScottsMerkin topcommenter

@ozonelarryb  I dont know if its called getting whored out.  He got a $325 million dollar loan which was 50% of the stadium estimated cost.  In the end Jerry spent 1.2 billion but the cities contribution didnt change.  And as many time as that place is sold out per year, and as many extra people are visiting the entertainment district, its been just fine for the city.  And as with the ballpark, I bet they pay off the bonds early.

You'll note that I wasn't whining about the whining journolistos, I was merely observing a phenomenon in which I was usually an eager participant, having high standards in the quality and quantity of freebies.

Sports journos whine more than hard news guys because the news guys are usually barred from accepting freebies, which they kinda whine about to the sports guys, especially us photogs, who are notoriously cheap, whorish and slobs to boot.
