Demarcus Ware, seven-time Pro Bowler, the Cowboys' all-time sacks leader and all-around beast, will wear the blue star no longer. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Clarence Hill Jr. reports that Dallas released Ware today.

Ware has been a Cowboy since they drafted him with the 11th pick in 2005, a rare draft-day coup by Jerry Jones. He's been brutalizing offenses ever since, at least until the 2013 season, when he was hobbled by various injuries and recorded a career low six sacks.

The possibility that Ware's career might have peaked a couple of years ago played a role in the Cowboys' decision to cut him. The bigger factor was his $12.25 million salary, which weighed heavily given the team's struggles to stay under the salary cap.

Here's what Jerry Jones said in a statement to The Dallas Morning News:

"A decision like this, involving a man who is a cornerstone player in the history of your franchise, is extremely difficult," said Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

"After meeting this afternoon, DeMarcus and I agreed on an understanding that would allow him to explore the options he will have for the 2014 season and beyond. We were also in very strong agreement that playing for the Dallas Cowboys would be one of the options we would both be exploring.

"DeMarcus Ware, through his performance on the field and his outstanding character, is someone who is held in the highest regard within the Dallas Cowboys family. He is worthy of our greatest respect, and we want what is best for him and his family."

This guy's got the right idea, even if cider's the wrong beverage (cider):

So how many fans in Ware jerseys next season are paying him tribute, and how many are far too broke to buy a new one after missing their boat payments to renew their season tickets for this rudderless ship of mediocrity?

You know the Cowboys have no clue what they are doing and their moves are not thought out - and havent been in the last 20 years! Since plan D (Demarcus) did not work - on to plan E (Josh Brent - who, while in jail - still has leverage over Jerry)! If the defense loses their best player and the team is ranked 32, I predict that they will be ranked 40th this coming year! With 5 or 6 former NFL head coaches on the staff and a defunct GM, the team has no personnel expertise on the coaching or playing side of the game. At least they will not be 8-8 this year --- that would be a dream. Just glad to be an ex season ticket holder. Y'all have fun out there!!

My lord DWare was great; the only thing other than TRom's scrambling and JWitt over the middle that we will remember from these mundane teams. He should have been paid, he wasn't............see you in the Ring of Honor.

How much dead cap space will Demarcus cost next season and beyond?

What difference, at this point, does it make?

Stay hard Demarcus. This sucks. Now your jersey rest next to Roy Williams in my closet.

@ScottsMerkin The linebacker. I'd be too embarrassed to admit it if I'd owned the wide receivers jersey.

@P1Gunter ZeroU Roy could bring a hit when he was playing close to the line.  No doubt about that.  Too many kids saw the cheers he got and quit learning good tackling skills, though.

Safety Roy was pretty good early in his career. Though you're right that he sucked at wrapping up tackles. Now if you want a bad investment, it's my Marcus Spears jersey. Even if he did sign it.

@P1Gunter uhhhh.  He played Safety.

UT Roy > ZeroU Roy

The receiver couldn't catch, the safety couldn't wrap up a tackle.

How do I discern that one was better than the other?  Height.
