Vigil Organizers Scrap Plans to Honor Crandall Cop Who Allegedly Killed His Wife

NickVanessaPitofsky.jpg
No one who encountered Sergeant Nick Pitofsky while he patrolled the streets of Crandall would have predicted that he'd wind up as the perpetrator of a murder-suicide, fatally shooting his wife, then himself at their home in the Cedars.

Understandable that the first response from his Crandall PD colleagues would be to describe him as an "energetic and jovial person who got along with everyone" and was "well-respected by his peers." It's a hard thing to digest, the prospect that a otherwise decent person might be capable of murder.

But inviting people to the town gazebo to "Come say farewell to the man who served Crandall" at a candlelight vigil? That's a bridge too far.

Fox 4 reported the vigil on its 5 p.m. newscast on Thursday. They did find one guy, a high school kid by the looks of him, who supports the vigil. He offered this eloquent defense:

"A lot of people like him, all the other police officers did. It's a bad thing that happened but -- it was tragic, you know. I don't know if it would offend anyone -- you know what I'm sayin'?"

By 10 p.m., though, the unnamed organizers had cancelled their plans, saying the vigil had turned into a "fiasco." Ceremonies honoring suspected wife-killers have a tendency to do that.

Gun violence? I've never heard of a gun committing an act of violence.

What is it with cops and shades? I can understand wearing them on the job for the badass storm-trooper look, but in a snapshot with the wife?

It might have worked to have a vigil for BOTH the cop and victim.  Murder-suicide is more about suicide than murder.  Regardless of cop's role in taking both of their lives, it is nonetheless a tragedy.

The mental health issues that led this officer to do this will likely never be addressed.  The truth is that cops are much more likely to take their own lives that the average person.

This is a family tragedy for many people close to the couple, and I think some recognition can be given to that fact.

Those who promote gun violence, and violence in general, most commonly and publicly, oddly enough, are on the left in America.

They make lots of money at it as well.

And when they are called on it, they deny the obvious - then offer solutions to the problems that they help create that are UN-American in nature, and most often practiced by totalitarian regimes.

Those most likely to promote gun safety are on the right.

And the statistically most violent in America reliably vote democrat.

Ba Da Bing. Every cop involved in a shooting or car accident should get pee test and hair test.

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul @ruddski  In my experience, a police uniform is no impediment to being a neo-nazi.

In fact, it's generally expected.

@tpfkap

Good question.

You know the old joke "what's 12 inches long and white?"

My thoughts exactly.  Why do black men with shaved heads look cool; but, white men with shaved heads look like a penis?

@badabing

And here I thought the baldness was to make them look like pricks.

That's the big question...why?  I don't pretend to have the answer to that.  It's so common -- murder-suicide involving spouses.  I have read that even mass murder-suicide is often more about the suicide from the motivation stand point.

I'm just saying I can feel some empathy for both the deceased.  If he was my son, I'd have lost both  a son and daughter.

@ScottsMerkin

You gotta wonder if there's some dude out there feeling both guilty and tremendously relieved if this was a result of a "jealous rage".
