LBJ Has Been Taken By the Trafficpocalypse

@AshleyNBC5
It's a shame, really, that Dallas never got to know what 635 is like without massive amounts of construction and with those groundbreaking TEXpress lanes fully operational. Alas, the freeway has fallen, overtaken by a traffic phenomenon completely unknown to science.

NBC 5 producer Ashley Lowell Doussard is tweeting photos of the freeway's final moments:

Nikki Williams, an on-the-ground witness to the Trafficpocalypse -- judging by her email, she hasn't yet been raptured -- passes along these photos of the five car collision at Skillman she says caused the crash:

Clearly, though, there are larger forces at work here than a single erratic driver. Central will be the next to go, then Stemmons. Abandoned cars will litter the freeways. Civilization as we know it will grind to a halt. Only the bicyclists will survive. Behold, the future:

Why isn't everyone focusing on the real problem here?....... Take Grandma's keys away! We did.

I was in the accident. I was with my mother-in-law and she was going to drop me off home. The person hit the right side of the car (where I was) and the car spun around about three times and finally stopped when we hit the HOV lane cement wall. When we got out of the vehicle a nice, young, black woman offered us help because she was a registered nurse. When I looked up I saw the chaos. A small SUV was flipped and many other cars were scattered all over the freeway. Firefighters quickly arrived the scene and blocked the lanes. Ambulances also got there quickly and assessed the situation. The police officers looked rather confused on what procedures to follow with the given circumstances. The people involved in the accident finally reunited and shared their part of their story on what had happened. The person who caused the accident was a black, elderly woman around 70 years old. I walked with another woman involved in the accident over to see if she was ok. She seemed a bit confused and was taken to the hospital. Her car was totaled. Based on witnesses she kept on driving until her car stopped in the HOV lane and another car was following her before she ran away and parked in front of her. Later on a young man was upset because the lanes were closed and the police officers to whom my mother-in-law and I were speaking to told him they were doing the best they could. The young man seemed like he wanted to cause a problem even though his tone was calm. The police officers asked him to please not intercede and to go back to his vehicle. The young man said, and I quote, "I"m loosing money. We all need to get to places." I later found out that he ended up getting arrested. Finally the tow trucks arrived and flipped the vehicle over and started to tow all the cars.  There was really no way for the lanes to be cleared. The woman who caused the accident was literally "snaking" her way at a fast speed in between cars and lanes so that is why all the cars involved were scattered all over the lanes. The victims needed to get the insurance information from the person who caused the problem but we had no luck. The police officers had to also get the information of all the people involved in the accident.

All I have to say to the comments of how the cars should have been moved is that you are extremely stupid. They are not little cars to be pushed to the side of the road. They weight a lot. Cars need to be towed, information needs to be shared, the injured have to be taken care of. Because you were not in the accident you don't give a rats ass about the situation but when you are also in a car accident of this magnitude you will then realize how it's not as simple as it may seem. I hope you never have to go through what we went through. My arm is swollen and has air bag burns, my neck hurts and I have discomfort, I can't sleep and I get very paranoid when in a car. Before you open your big mouth think about what some people went through. I can't believe such human disconnect. How sad.

If you back up to the entrance ramp behind you, no one will even notice.

That isnt even the construction area. Unfortunately - Dallas drivers are catching up to the Houston mayhem! More crazy stupid people on the road these days with no regard for others! And - before 2 or 3 years ago -- how many wrong way drivers did you see?? There are 2 a month on major roads where you really have to want to go the wrong way! if you are going to kill yourself on the road - just run into a pillar and dont take innocent people with you.

I've never seen anything quite like this though I avoided LBJ like the plague for my 30 years of Dallas driving. Now I'm in Chicago where I've put 30 miles on my car since I had the oil changed on Dec 5th. And it's not because of the snow that I don't drive much, it's because public transportation is incredibly easy here. Arlington, I'm mostly talking to you! What I wouldn't have given to have taken a train or bus to Rangers games all those years. But I digress... LBJ frightens me even on good days!

I don't see how this is any different from any other day.

Why doesn't DPD use best practices traffic clearing techniques?  Lengthy traffic jams caused by slow accident clearing procedures used by DPD result in excess air pollution and millions of hours of wasted manpower/productivity annually.

wow, just push the cars off the road, bury the survivors, and get it moving

This is exactly why we can't have flying cars.

Kudos to the donut brigade for prompt professional response in clearing this. Har.

Shit like this is an open invitation to commit crimes, as the cops put 2 cruisers at each on ramp to discourage use.

Oh well, at least they didn't shoot anyone.

Every now and then I miss living in Dallas. And then this happens and I high five myself for moving to Fort Worth.

@bvckvs There was no traffic actually. The person who caused the issue was an elderly woman around your age.

Wrong bucky. That shot is just a few yards away from the accident. They had nowhere to go.

@michael214u It couldn't happen any faster. I was headed southbound on Greenville near 635 when this went down. Car fleeing the highway were making a mess of all of the major exits near Abrams. It was a lot easier weaving around and away because I was on a Vespa. Thank you Italy for providing a machine designed for humans to cope with post-industrial disaster.

manuwe30

@Montemalone Well when ever your car gets hit or flips over then you will see how that is different from any other day.

manuwe30
manuwe30

@WylieH I agree with one thing you said. DPD didn't seem to know how to handle the situation. But it really isn't up to them to clear the accident and open up the lanes again. Many cars had to be towed so we were all waiting for the tow trucks to arrive. We needed to exchange insurance information and get checked out by medics. And I can't believe you're worried about "air pollution and wasted hours of man power and productivity." Smh.

ozonelarryb

Because this is the shitty that works, don't you know. No need to learn anything.

@WylieH Looks like they were trained by the Virginia State Police who have been known to tie up both sides of I-95 when trying to clear an accident. truly a sight to be seen

manuwe30

@commiebiker I didn't see you pushing the cars off the road first of all. I wish I could have seen you flip the car and move all the cars by yourself since you're in such a hurry to get to the Harley Davidson sale. Your disconnect to human suffering only makes me think you're some sort of psychopath. Smh at another one.

If you bury the survivors, who is left to use the road?

I was actually ran off the road by the driver that caused the accident to happen a few yards ahead of me. I stayed on the scene for medical assistance and witness purposes and was able to leave after the cops arrived because luckilly I was parked ahead of where the barricade began

manuwe30

@Montemalone @EdD.It was. The woman hit him from behind at a high speed it made his SUV fly over the car in front of him and land upside down.

By using more squad cars than necessary.

As I said, they posted 2 to block one lane entrance ramps.

@Montemalone @DoomCookie  c'mon, real dallasites dont even consider 635 to be "Dallas" that is too far north.  Also Fort Worth did just get named best downtown in America

Thanx for the laff bucky.

You want to take 2 opposite positions. At first you say the people right at the front of the mess could have avoided it with some technology. Then you say the wreck can have wide consequences....

Geez, I would sure like to see your argument with yourself if you had 3 tv shows to choose from.

ozonelarryb

2 hours before even 1 lane got cleared. With no deaths, serious injury, or Hazmat.

That is a poor showing by DPD.

manuwe30
manuwe30

@ozonelarryb Hmmm....let's see...because cars were not able to be moved because they were totaled and they are too heavy, cops were getting information from each driver and passenger and witnesses, the cars were scattered all over the lanes because of how the accident occurred. I hope that answered your question if not I can explain it to you some more.

Nikki.Williams

It was 5 cars, not 1. Complicated things just a tad

ozonelarryb

So explain to us what was so complicated about this scene that the cops couldn't push the car to the side and get people moving.

@ScottsMerkin @Montemalone @DoomCookie  Exactly, the only people who take LBJ are going from one suburb to another. No Dallasite worth his 214 area code would set tire on that abominable clusterfuck.
