These Drivers Have Been Stranded on I-45 for Hours

Here's hoping you were able to avoid driving this morning. If you did have to get behind the wheel, here's hoping your route didn't include Interstate 45 through Corsicana, which tweets and media reports confirm is an ice-covered parking lot.

This presents some rather obvious challenge. For first responders, it's unclogging the road and keeping people from freezing to death inside their tiny metal boxes; for stranded motorists, it's how to keep from going insane; for news outlets, it's how best to capture the unspeakable misery of the poor souls on the road, many of whom have reportedly been suffering in an icy purgatory since last night.

Do you dispatch the chopper and live-stream footage of a seemingly endless line of parked cars, which conveys the scope of the situation but becomes rather monotonous?

Do you broadcast viewers' photos of the taillights they've been staring at for several hours?

Or do you zoom out so that the cars appear as ants, arranged two-by-two across a football field:

All Collin County offices are closed for the day 3-3-2014, Some schools are closed - some opened late but dad's nursing home had every clinical & office worker there bright & early in the am & of course I was the one who had to reschedule the care plan meeting dad for tomorrow because I didn't want to try to get out & drive there.  I wonder what they did with their kids that were out of school for the day?

I'll bet those stuck drivers will think twice next time about driving anywhere in those conditions. And thanks for the links to road conditions. I wonder how quickly they are updated regarding traffic jams you want to avoid in regular weather.

I've noticed that on week-ends, if there is a major weather event, you don't get much TV news coverage.  On weekdays, they pre-empt regular programming if a quarter inch of snow falls.  Yesterday, even the local news regular slots were delayed by golfing and car racing.  What gives?

Neither. Preempt all programming. Run wall to wall the 'news' that there is weather out there.

tell everyone too stupid to believe their eyes or fingertips to take a joyride.

it'll be a DarWIN.

I wonder if those big rigs have some sort of "microtel" setup in their cabs.

I'm snowed in on mountainous roads, but my wifi works! My fan club here (that's a sarcastic use of the term, folks) is probably thrilled to know that (that was sarcasm).

I picked a helluva decade to give up skiing.

@Myrna

Those events, especially golfing, have much higher advertising costs than typical weekday fare.

Both audiences for the cited sports are known big spenders.

It's called a sleeper cab, but there's no room service. There was no room service in the last Microtel I stayed in, but there was a Denny's next door, and Pizza delivery.

If recent history is any indication, they might get that room service from a homophobic chicken-killing Christian organization promoted by cows and boycotted by nutters. Wonder how many drivers will refuse the sandwiches due to their ideological devotion?

Edit: That was sarcasm, and humor.

@ruddski  It was a brilliant lampoon in the grand tradition of Twain and Voltaire.

That was a lot of things, but humorous was not one them.

There's a "like" button, there's a "reply" button. Maybe we need a "groan" button, or maybe a "For the love of God, please STFU!" button.

@Twain

I think perhaps you're calling me

anti-government and a scold,

but I've never dabbled in poetry

Or so I'm often told.

I've never bedded a Marquise

nor been banished by the throne

I've crossed the Mississippi

But never on my own.

How to pronounce "Marquise"

Is my only true unknown

but if it rhymes with queasy

My poem will draw few groans.

Otherwise, I'm screwed.

@JFPO

What are all these lots of things it was, then? I'm here to learn!
