A Greenville Avenue St. Paddy's Beatdown Left One Man With a Broken Jaw, Police Say

Dallas' St. Patrick's Day parade and party on Greenville Avenue this weekend was, for all the drinking and debauchery, generally peaceful. According to the final tally Dallas PD sent out on Saturday evening, police arrested seven people for public intoxication and one for DWI, handed out 125 parking tickets, and had 12 cars towed.

The celebration, however, wasn't completely non-violent. Omitted from the final count, possibly because it took place a block off Greenville, was an apparently random beat-down that sent a Tyler man to the hospital with a broken jaw.

According to a police report, 25-year-old Scott Goodwin was walking on the sidewalk in the 5600 block of Anita Street when a man "came up from nowhere and punched him in the face."

Goodwin tried unsuccessfully to defend himself, falling to the ground where the attacker, identified by police as 31-year-old Mustafa Hasan Alkaraoi, kicked him repeatedly in the face.

What precipitated the beating isn't clear from the police report. Alkaraoi, who fled but was arrested a few minutes later after a witness spotted him walking down Greenville Avenue, was subsequently interviewed by a detective, but no motive is listed.

Alkaraoi contacted the Observer after this blog post was published to say the attack was anything but random.

"[H]e hit me first when I was trying to break a fight between him and another woman," he wrote in an email.

An ambulance took Goodwin to Baylor Hospital, where he was treated for a fractured jaw. Alkaraoi was taken to Lew Sterrett on a charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He was released earlier this morning after posting a $25,000 bond, according to county records.

Send your story tips to the author, Eric Nicholson.

i was just wondering , at what point does being a TOP COMMENTER ,go from being a badge of pride into just being embarrassing?

It would have been a story if there WASN'T violence!  That south end of the parade is like Beirut on a hot night.

Nahh, I agree. Mustafa, what you are claiming doesn't pass the smell test as another commenter said.

The Army would have escorted you out of Lew Sterrat to barracks until trail is complete. and then your dicharge paperwork would be completed on a verdict of guilty.

this article should be deleted. I dont think a soldier who tried to defend a woman should be treated like that!

how did I get the black eye if I came from no where and hit him from behind??????

The Irish don't need a motive for fighting during this celebration. but I'm guessing that Mustafa might not be Irish.

Mustafa Hasan Alkaraoi appears to be a twitter, @DopeMufasa, of Dallas. Looks like him.

Edit: wrong guy, disregard.

James Rose was reporting live from Greenville on Channel 4 News Saturday.  He was repeatedly accosted by drunken slobs, one of which waved a middle finger at the camera.

Not a bad showing for a parade centered in no small part on alcohol consumption. Looks to have been no worse than an average weekend night. Was O'Doul's the beverage of choice?

Feel sorry for Random, though. Seems everywhere he goes, he gets beat up, beat down, killed or worse. Did anyone think to get Greg Packer's side of the story?

"Random beat-down".  Maybe.  But possibly a provocation by a belligerent, sloppy drunk.

Conviction of a misdemeanor usually means busted down one grade. You can even enlist with certain misdemeanors, even multiple offenses.

I believe the pic - you look like the thug being described. Come up from behind and break someone's jaw?? You are correct - this is a waste of space for an article as your assault isnt worth the reading. Unfortunately - you will be lucky and not get the jail time like appears to be deserved!

You're commenting on what amounts to social media, while out on felony bond, and you're on leave? You're a moron for sure, and apparently a thug. Recruiting standards really have gone to hell. Here's hoping for a swift General discharge, if not OTH or even the Big Chicken Dinner, because I'll bet this isn't your first encounter with legal authorities.

@mustafa

It's a police report. If and when you are vindicated, the DO will likely follow up. If they don't, then contact them and press the issue.

If the incident happened as you describe, you are to be commended.

However, you should probably avoid commenting further here, you may inadvertently complicate your case.

Since you fled the scene of the crime, instead of calling the cops, you'll have a hard time convincing any reasonable person that you're anything other than a thug.

Instead of asking others to explain your injuries for you, perhaps you should consider explaining them yourself... like a man.

No green in his mug shot, that's a tip-off. However, his shirt is yellow, a color identified with a certain "Spring", and it ain't Irish.

Not since the mid-2000s have the services been that lenient in recruiting. With across-the-board force reductions that started in late 2013, enlisting with multiple misdemeanors is impossible, and retention will be problematic if not impossible as well.

I'll conjecture here and suppose that this thug's MOS is interpreter (09L), which requires a security clearance. Even if he's not AWOL to begin with, this felony charge alone will be sufficient to cancel his security clearance, in which case, he's out of a job and probably out of the service.

Don't think it's felony charge. Soldiers aren't discharged for fighting.

That story doesn't pass the smell test.  When you're in the military and get arrested for a felony, they don't just let you bond out.  They contact your commanding officer who then sends a couple of MP's to bring you home.

@ScottsMerkin @raventx  Yeah my stereo.  They did a whole lotta damage to my Jeep - cut the soft door upper, bend the eff out of the other one tile the metal framing broke, broke into the center console, and took a crowbar to the dash.  They tried to steal my jeep(found a hidden key), but thankfully the starter decided to die. Ha!

Still buncha punks.  Have fun with the frazzled up stereo!

Visit Ireland.  You don't see that low-life behavior there.  In fact, the Irish are extremely well-educated, well-mannered, and friendly.

From what read this AM, there are waivers, but at the time I thought his crime was misdemeanor.

Hopefully we'll get updated.

@wccemail

I sit possibly corrected, it would be helpful if this story were reported in full, including the nature of the charge.

As far as discharge, as I understand it, that is at the discretion of the military. I think only sexual assault results in auto discharge.

@ruddski
With the usual caveat that I'm not an attorney nor do I play one on a comments board, my reading of the Tx law code tells me that it's either a 1st- or 2nd-degree felony.

And yes, soldiers are discharged for felonies. In these reductionary times, soldiers are going to be discharged for less.

I ask because the cops got the story from someone, but perhaps your witnesses had left the scene as you did.

If you have reliable witnesses, hopefully you'll get proper justice. Good luck.

So name all of the dangerous places in Ireland you've been to.  BTW, leave out Northern Ireland, since it's part of the UK.

whocareswhatithink
whocareswhatithink

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz Yes, Im sure the Brits would agree with you...apart from all those IRA bombings.. and the three decades of the Troubles has also been very peaceful. Drinking a Bushmills vs a Jameson or vice versa can get you stabbed in certain parts of Ireland. Visiting Dublin and a few tourist areas is not going to "Ireland" and understanding the Irish culture

ruddski
ruddski

@ChrisYu

Ireland, as is the case everywhere, is as dangerous as the places you visit in Ireland. Anyone who tells you "xxxxxx is a wonderful place and the people are polite..." has likely restricted their travels to areas where that is the norm.

You can get your ass kicked in Ireland just as easily as you can in NYC.

And in London, you've got drunken sots and Muslim rads.
