2 Wylie Teens Murdered Their Classmate, Then Dumped His Body Near Firewheel Mall, Police Say

The undeveloped stretch of woods north of Garland's Firewheel Mall is exactly the type of spot where a Hollywood screenwriter would have the two panicked 16-year-old suburban kids, suddenly in way over their heads, dump their classmate's body. It's also, according to police, the type of spot where two panicked 16-year-old suburban kids go to dump their classmate's body.

Garland cops were called to the area at about 9:30 on Saturday night after a passerby found it strange to see a car veering into the trees off State Highway 78. Police first found the empty car, then the two 16-year-olds trying to flee. Asked what they were doing, one of the teens, neither of whom have been identified because of their age, replied that they were "burying a body."

Sure enough, officers rather quickly came upon a fresh corpse.

The body belonged to 17-year-old Ivan Mejia, the two teens' classmate at Wylie East High School. Police haven't said yet exactly how he was killed or why, just that murder took place Saturday behind Wylie East, and that the whole thing was planned in advance by the two teens, both of whom have been charged with murder.

(Update at 4:26 p.m.: Prosecutors told a judge today that Mejia was choked to death. The two suspects had been planning the murder for almost a week, probably over a girl. They choked Mejia, put him in a headlock, then taped a sock in his mouth, holding his nose shut to make sure he suffocated.)

the two suspects choked and suffocated Mejia, then put him in a headlock. To ensure he was dead one of the suspects held Mejia's nose shut and the other put a sock in his mouth and then taped it over.

Police believe the murder was planned for nearly a week. Prosecutors told a judge the motive for the murder was likely over a relationship with a girl that Mejia was dating, causing jealousy for one of the suspects.

Making the scenario even more unsettling is that Mejia isn't the first Wylie East student in recent memory to be murdered by his peers. Two years ago, a couple of 14-year-old students shot 15-year-old Nahum Martinez in the head, then dragged his body to a drainage ditch near their subdivision.

"The entire Wylie ISD community is shocked and saddened by this senseless act," the district said in a statement on Sunday. "We are cooperating with the police as they investigate, and we hope they will be able to provide us with some understanding how this tragedy unfolded."

this could be considered a "crime of passion" but for the premediation part, so yeah, their fucked. I would hate to be the defense attorney on this one.

Reading the article: "You said that. Um, you said that. You said that, too. Uh, you said that already." Blame it on the exorbitant cost of proofreading. Or maybe Nicholson thinks his readers' comprehension doesn't last from one paragraph to the next.

The opening paragraph is absolutely abysmal. It's unfortunate that the type of writing that passes over at BuzzFeed now passes for legitimate journalism.

Fucked up man, these kids are out of control. And how stupid can they be? Going to go thru all the trouble to dispose of the victim. Get caught in the act, admit to it. Then take off running, wow and it says they planned to kill this kid too. Whats wrong with these kids out in the suburbs? Playing too much GTA maybe? What makes them think that they could even get away with this shit? And they get 15yrs for a planned premeditated murder! And someone gets caught with some drugs and gets a sentence damn near the same or even worse. Depending on how much shit they got caught with? Its fucked up, the system is completely back ass backwards! I think they should of gotten a hell of a lot worse of a sentence. They should of claimed the afluenza defence then? Why do these stupid rich kids get these light ass sentences? If it was a kid in East Dallas white, black, or Hispanic they would of gotten 25 to life! That's the typical sentence for this sort of crime. If you're poor middle class inner city kids with no money for a defense you get the book thrown at you! But if you have money you get the best case scenario huh? 15 yrs what a joke, they'll get out in 7-10 yrs then. I doubt they made it an aggravated crime to where they'd have to do the majority of their sentence? Had a friend get busted with drugs in his apartment in East Dallas and they fuck him! Never been in trouble in his life! 39 yrs old, served our country and they had the audacity to enhance his charge and say it was in a drugfree zone too! Making it an aggravated charge so he'll have to do all of his sentence. There was no school near him, no churches either. No they found some random lady who had a daycare out of her home who lived nearly a mile away. Just goes to show you that their priorities are so fucked here in the judicial system in Texas. You get caught with drugs they hang your ass, kill someone and you happen to be well off. Then they slap you om the wrist. And I bet they killed that poor kid over some petty shit too? Fuckn wannabe gangsta ass kids from the burbs. Hope they like it in prison, find out real quick what its like to be a gangsta. Please that lifestyle is fuckn stupid and these kids glorify this shit. Thinking they are real gs, shooting someone over nothing. Whatever happened to a good ol fashioned ass whooping? Do people remember to atleast fight it out if they had problems? Not get a gun and shoot em dead, ask questions later. Whatever sucks it had to happen. But good riddance to the lil scum.

The call was 11.30pm at night, not 9.30pm....even on a Saturday night, you should know where your kids are...especially if they have been murdering some other kid that night. Parents, please parent.

They are minors, so their names cannot be revealed.  However, there is a news blog out there that has posted photos of the two that look like mug shots.  I'm wondering how they got them from the cops.

@lordmeow Amen.  Once you "top commenters" have commented -- let it be.  I, for one, am tired of having to scroll through all the tit for tat to find comments of value.

@myrna

That's public info, but I'm surprised they release minors photos.

Now they have to pay to get them removed, but being the net, they'll be there forever.

Top commenters get their Top Status by commenting a lot. Now, if you have something to offer us Top Commenters that is more attractive than the prestige, admiration, love and all the free shit we get from our status, I, for one, am all ears.

After all the hard work we put in to get to the top, we're not just going to throw it all away just to keep a bottom commenter from having to scroll. When and if you attain Top Commenter status, then you'll get a vote in procedural matters, will be eligible to participate in flame wars, make multiple off-topic posts, and will of course be eligible for all the aforementioned Free Shit.

Ah, you "try to comment". How often have your attempts been unsuccessful?

In the future, if you run into problems while trying to comment, alert a Top Commenter, we know the ropes - most if not all of our comments get through - admittedly this often involves bribing a moderator, but they're so underpaid, they'll accept just about anything.

@Lorlee If you are looking for cogent, intelligent comments, why the hell are you reading the feedback section of the DO (or any other web article)?  Seriously.

@ruddski What I can offer is respect for cogent, intelligent comments.  I expect that I am not the only one who feels this way.  We try to comment when we actually have something to say.

Well, it's been over an an hour, no-one has fulfilled your request, and apparently you haven't googled up the answer. That tells me your interest in the matter wasn't all that great to begin with, and that no-one need feel guilty for not helping you out in your time of need.

I know the answer to your question.

However, being critical of the welfare state and laziness, and along the lines of teaching you how to fish rather than broil your snapper for you, I'm just handling your request as I would one from a kid who is perfectly capable of handling such a monumental task.

But if the drug laws can keep someone, anyone, from touching a gun, you'd think an anti-gun rights person would be in favor of any and all drug laws.

@monstruss  Exactly.   As PlanoDave said yesterday:

"Quit trying to determine the motives behind people who disagree with you, though.  We all have different backgrounds and different perspectives.  It is OK to disagree with somebody, why does it have to lead to demonizing?"

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz @ruddski  I've had a close relative murdered with a knife.  It's touchy for me -- her murder doesn't resonate with these monsters just because she wasn't gunned down.  (And if she had been able to have a gun herself -- which she couldn't because of the gun laws -- then she might still be alive.)

There's no NRA in Russia, Somalia, or any number of countries that are awash with guns and violence.

Imagine how much worse it would be if there WERE an NRA equivalent in those countries!!
