A.C. Gonzalez Got $400,000 Because Dallas Is Dumb, Not Because He's a Guy

Before the ink on A.C. Gonzalez' $400,000 contract was even dry, some were suggesting that the $95,000 gap between his salary and predecessor Mary Suhm's might have something to do with their different gender.

Here's former City Councilwoman Veletta Lill commenting to KERA that "it looks like they didn't value the female city manager quite as much as the male manager."

Let's go ahead and nip that speculation in the bud. The City Council loved Suhm. Remember when Vonciel Hill compared her to Jesus, which is a thing that actually happened? If anything, the council tended to overvalue "the female city manager."

What's actually seems to be happening here -- a point that was highlighted by Hill of all people -- is that, rather than base their decision on what's needed to keep Gonzalez in Dallas, the City Council is looking at city-manager salary inflation in places like San Antonio, where pay was recently bumped to $375,000 and will increase to $400,000 next year, and deciding this offers an accurate reflection of the position's value.

You can't, after all, have a wold-class city without paying your top bureaucrat a world-class salary.

If Suhm were in Gonzalez's shoes, she'd be getting the same kind of cash thrown at her. This is an example of foolishness by the Dallas City Council, not of gender inequality.

It was at market value! Women make 75% of men, so AC just stepped up and said, I need 133% of what the lady made. Brilliant, and our council bought it!

If they hired the guy from North Carolina and paid him 400k all of white Dallas including you Eric would be ok with it.

He got it because he is a guy with the goods on the Big Boys and council members.

You think $400K is a lot of money?  His pension will be worth north of $5mm in PRESENT value at his retirement.  Mary's is conservatively valued at $4.6mm.

Hill's comments were nothing more than smokescreen. She knew he was going to get the job. Hill's already trying to cover her ass regarding Uber and the VA land deal that both DO and DMN have seemingly dropped from covering any further. Why is that?

What I find interesting is that the salary was definitely negotiated in executive session BEFORE he was officially appointed CM in session. The search committee comprised of Alonzo, Kadane, and Caraway could not have come up with that number themselves unless Mike had told them to do it, and we all know that Mike only does what the DCC tells him.

This was locked in the day Suhm announced her supposed retirement/leaving/I'm really still here in the back room- plans.

Would San Antonio hire A.C and an even better question was A.C. going to turn down the job if they paid him the same as Suhm?

Said again:

What a classy way for the Dallas City Council to give the citizens of Dallas the middle finger. DCC knew that most citizens did not want more of the same with AC but for them to go out and bring in someone from outside the corrupt confines of Dallas City Council yet they not only vote him in, but pay him the highest salary in the country.

Dallas Citizens - This was a big F- You from the Council!!!

Said differently, they wanted to clarify who runs shit up in here: Not the Citizens of Dallas, Council runs shit up in here, you just live here!!!
