Since New Year's, Dallas Thieves Have Stolen 60 Cars Left Idling to Warm Up

Dallas, we know you suck at coping with cold weather and that you would much prefer to step into a warm car on a winter morning. Trust us. We feel the same way. But leaving an unwatched car idling on a Dallas street is like wrapping a steak in bacon, throwing it to a pack of stray dogs, and hoping it doesn't get eaten.

Frankly, Dallas PD's auto theft team is sick of it. This afternoon, they passed along a friendly note reminding citizens that it's much harder for car thieves to take your ride if you don't leave the keys inside.

The numbers are a bit stupefying. In the month of January, which is all of 15.75 days old, thieves have made off with 60 cars that had been left to warm up. That's four people every day.

DPD's announcement is diplomatic, avoiding words like "stupid" and "idiot" and "forcrissakeswhyareyoumakingmyjobsoeffinghard!!!" But they are clearly not pleased, both by the fact that your ill-considered quest for warmth is bumping up crime stats and that by leaving your keys in the car, you are breaking the law. (See: Dallas City Code Section 28-5).

Nor is leaving the engine idling doing anything for your car's health. In the inimitable words of Click & Clack, "all you're doing with a long warm-up is wasting gas, increasing pollution, raising the temperature of the planet and making yourself 10 minutes late for your chiropractic appointment."

So we can tell victims of car theft it's their fault for getting their car stolen and demand they change their behavior, but questioning the wisdom of a woman getting black out drunk is "slut shaming" and causes professional victims to go absolutely apoplectic.

Doesn't that affect your insurance premiums when your stupidity directly contributed to the theft?

I don't give a shit what Click & Clack say, when it is anywhere below, say, 20 F., I'm letting the car run for 10 minutes before I jump in and take off. A 10 minute warmup in my Civic has the windows clearing and heat blowing strong by the time I get in.

As for the 1/4 cup of fuel I might use on the few days each year this happens, well, I'm willing to foot the bill for that.

Of course, I don't have a whole lot of folks prowling around out here on Old Mattress Rd.

I don't even understand why people in rural places do this. Or leave their car unlocked. Its just pure stupidity.

They make this thing called remote/auto start.  No keys required. Invest in it, it doesnt cost that much

These are the people who drive along with tye heater cranked, gloves on, fur coatx closed up tight, windows up... then wonder why they are sweating and get cold in the 20 foot walk to their building. And the same ones who are prob dropping dead from the flu.. no damned immunity.

Yup, blaming the victims for abject stupidity. Like attachng the 'KICK ME' sign to their own butts.

@bifftannen

I always leave my car unlocked - everywhere I go. There is nothing in it worth stealing and I've had my windows broken a few times now because some asshole just HAD to get in and check for themselves. Might as well let them rifle through it and save myself the hassle of replacing the window.
