Frisco Going Forward With Prosecution of Sign-Holder

mrozinskiworkride.jpg
Yesterday we introduced you to Ron Martin, a man who was arrested by Frisco traffic cops for holding a sign toward passing motorists that said "Police ahead."

Officer Thomas Mrozinski (that's his police vehicle pictured above) was trying to catch drivers going over the speed limit that day. When he discovered Martin, he arrested him and charged him with an obscure ordinance covering sign regulations.

Martin had his day in court yesterday afternoon, hoping the charges would be dropped. They weren't.

Instead, the city of Frisco is pursuing its case against Martin. Starting February 21, jurors will get to decide whether or not he violated Frisco's sign ordinance. You mess with Frisco's sign aesthetics, you face the consequences. (Lead-filled landfills, however, are totally cool).

Meanwhile, Martin sent over the video footage he captured on his phone of the arrest.

Sounds like the cops are just pissed that he found a legal way for them to cut down on their ability to fill their quota. They admitted they'd met him before and it sounds like they didn't like this guy and were just looking for a reason to arrest him. This offense should be a ticket at most not an arrest.

Why has not the pet protesting crowds with their signs, the mayor and other political candidates with their signs, the Dallas Cowboy supporters with their signs, the people with tattoos, the people wearing jeans with a label such as "Wrangler", the people with sunglasses with a logo, the people carrying flags or bags with company names on them, not all been arrested?

That is right, because this is pure and simple police and governmental retaliation. These are the same guys who will take away your Free Speech Rights and your Second Amendment Rights regardless of what they say claiming that they are just doing their jobs and enforcing the law.

Note that Frisco is going to take $750,000,000 more out of property owners' pockets new projects. Watch out.

We are not going to shop in Frisco any more. We are going to work to replace the politicians that are treating us this way.

Free speech, the sign ordinance is for commercial signage

I really hope that Mr. Martin or Mr. Martin's attorney has a copy of the arresting officers' Facebook page that was found.  It should help them in court.

"Why has not anyone commented on the Facebook screenshot which documents a direct quote by Frisco PD Officer Thomas Mrozinski Jr, "My new work ride! Watch out Frisco!"

The court date is set for February 21st. If Mr. Martin chooses a trial by jury, it will be composed of citizens of Frisco.  The statement by the arresting officer documents infers that he has a vendetta against the people of Frisco.  This will hurt his credibility.

However, Mr. Martin has already won, even if he is found guilty by the Frisco Municipal Court system.  You can bet that the City will spend much more money by preparing for this trial than court costs can be assessed by way of city attorneys researching a rock solid case.

And don't forget that this story has made national news and put Frisco in a bad light.  Its not a case of an individual illegally standing in the median of a street anymore.  In the public perception, it is now case of first amendment rights vs. the police trying to take money from the citizens.

The perception has already taken hold, and even if Mr. Martin is found guilty, the City of Frisco still looses.

Shouldn't the cop arrest himself? He just outed himself with the Facebook post, the same thing the sign holder was doing.

Is there a paypal or some other account to help pay for the ability of Mr. Martin to protect his free speech rights?

I would like to donate.

As a Frisco resident, this whole ordeal does make me wonder if there isn't some crime somewhere our cops could be fighting?

It also makes me wonder if my tax dollars spent to fight a guy holding a sign couldn't have better use?

Then again, we did give Jerrah Jones millions in our tax dollars, so maybe not.

So Barry_98 posts "You may not realize this, but the city has a vested interest in making sure that motorists are not unduly distracted while driving on the city's streets. Ok are you really from this planet? If you look at many signs on Frisco especially at night, they are blinding and you cannot help but be distracted but the city does not do a thing about that. The city needs to leave this guy alone as it is a waste of resources and they need to go after the actual "distracted" drivers that constantly text, look at and keep there phones in there hands all the time. I have seen so many people almost hit other cars, motorcycles and even kids because of being in the phone texting or taking. One day someone of importance is going to get killed and then watch, FPD will then take measures to stop this sloppy driving. The problem with the police in this town is that they think there is endless monies to buy the items that they think they need, and they also think that entrapment is legal in this city. They really need to take a class!  Help people, give citizens respect and then the police will be liked and supported by the community it serves.

Next time, follow the laws. Problem solved.

You reap what you sow. You wage a war on the police you will get return fire. 11 harrassment complaints against an extremely reputable FPD is a peronal vendetta. I support our FPD and think this writer is biased and stirring the pot.. Which is a constitutional right. just report all the facts please.

"Take jury duty.  Everybody tries to get out of jury duty like it's a big pain in the ass.  But it's honestly the easiest way that you can make a difference as a single human being.  If you take jury duty, if it's any kind of bullsh*t crime, drug possession, victimless crime, anything that's none of your goddamned business, you just say, 'Not Guilty.'"  --Doug Stanhope

@b.evans87 pretty much everything you do could be classified as illegal in some lawbook or another...we have 5% of the worlds population and 23.4% of the worlds prison population for chrissake..you dont get there by accident dontchaknow

@JoeSilk My family and I are also refusing to visit or spend any money in  Frisco either.

They probably don't care, but it makes me feel better, and I know Im not going to be stung in one of their speed traps.

@scottindallasI'm pretty sure free speech only applies to keeping your television shows after you say something stupid.

@txgrl1978 I agree, even CNN's AC360 has talked about it.

Even if they are able to get a guilty verdict, Frisco gets a black eye.

@appleskip2003 I did a quick Google search on protest laws regarding roads and highways and all I was able to find in my admittedly quick search was bans on demonstrations near highways (overpasses, side of road, etc.) based on the safety issues of drivers going a high rate of speed being distracted.

You are so right. The most important job of a cop is to retaliate against his protectees.

Your slavish obeisance to authority for authority's sake is disgusting. In 1776, you would have been a Tory.

Ba Da Bing. Jury duty is the best education you can get. They made me foreman one time. It was a gas.

Seriously, get on a jury, evaluate cop testimony, don't just drink the koolaid.

@bvckvs @b.evans87 They can write anything they want and place it on the books, making it 'illegal'.

It still doesn't make it right.

Standing in a median, violations of ordinances. Obey any laws that may exist, or you get the ride downtown, and they win.

This is basic protest stuff we learned in the 60's.

@scottindallas@ruddskiLaws are only for little people.

From Blade Runner:

Deckard: [getting up to leave] I was quit when I come in here, Bryant, I'm twice as quit now.

Bryant: Stop right where you are! You know the score, pal. You're not cop, you're little people!

[Deckard stops at the door]

Deckard: No choice, huh?

Bryant: [smiles] No choice, pal.

@ozonelarryb So if someone was harassing you and your co workers you would be fine with that?? I sure would do something about it!

Pulling people over in a school zone to issue a citation is a long ways from arresting someone for holding a sign the median.

Go down Live Oak and make a right at E. Washington to get over to Ross. Only on short school zone and no cops. Thank me later.

@bvckvs @redman38 @JoeSilk The U.S. refused to do business with South African during Apartheid.  Apartheid was legal in South Africa.  They eventually changed, in spite of people like you.

Since I am fortunate enough to live in a city that respects free speech and doesn't have speed traps, I can't vote in Frisco. But I can vote with my money.

@bvckvs your right it is illegal for you to lie to a police officer it is fine and legal for them to lie to you..They are above us all.  These men are steroid ridden supermen an uber race of ss stormtroopers to help heal us and put the jackboot to our proverbial head as why bite down on the curb of freedom.

@JoeSilk @bvckvs @dr.sloan He wasnt loved by anyone throughout his entire life. Now he is a worthless old man who has nothing better todo than defend the police over speeding and BS local police ordinance. Glad that you support the police rather than the person who was just warning people traveling home, from work, getting their kids, ect from having their day ruined and them paying a fee that they dont need to.

Therexwas no workplace harassment. It was in PUBLIC. As if your work held a meeting in a public park and a dog or frisbee intruded.
