A Saginaw Walmart Barely Avoided a Black Friday Riot (Video)

Categories: News
For those folks who still refer to Brown Thursday as "Thanksgiving" and for whom Black Friday is all the more reason to stay indoors, here's some of what you missed, according to blackfridaydeathcount.com:

-In Connecticut, an 11-year-old was hospitalized after being trampled by a crowd at Walmart and a shopper was pepper-sprayed after arguing with a store manager and attacking a cop.

-In Virginia, at another Walmart, a man was stabbed over a parking spot.

-In Rialto, California, at yet another Walmart, a brawl sent a cop to the hospital.

A Walmart spokeswoman described the latter incident as an "unfortunate and isolated incident."

The Thursday night scrum at the Walmart in Saginaw didn't make blackfridaydeathcount.com, presumably because no one was seriously injured. But a video clip of the 8 p.m. rush toward a display of Blu-Ray players, GPS units, and speakers did make YouTube, where it's nearing 1.3 million views.

We'll let Joseph Solis, the 21-year-old who shot the footage, describe the scene.

"It was kind of like The Hunger Games," he told NBC 5. "It was just like everyone just rushed towards the middle and that was it."

The end of the clip shows an injured man being escorted away from the crowd. WFAA caught up with him on Friday.

"When they said go, I started to approach the pallet where the products were at, and as I was grabbing some of the products, the display gave way," he told the station. "I fell on top of the display and I had probably 10 or 15 people on top of me. The next thing I know, my wife is pulling people off, my brother's trying to get to me, the cops were pulling people off. After that it was just a blur."

He wasn't seriously hurt, he said, just sore thanks in part to the shoulder surgery he had in September.

In a statement to NBC 5, Walmart described the Saginaw dogpile as an "isolated incident."

I thought nobody went to Walmart on Friday in solidarity with the striking employees and the Our Walmart campaign for higher wages

Maybe Black Friday will become a traditional spectator event. Running of the Bulls, American style.

On youtube, there are many videos of poor and feral behavior at mcdonalds, denny's, IHOP, etc, but these businesses don' t seem to get the blame like walmart does.

This is why you'll never see a $50 Blu-Ray at Neiman Marcus.

Do events like this occur at other retailers other than WalMart?  Or is this a case where events such as this occurring at WalMart attract more attention because they occur at WalMart?  If events such as this occur at other retailers other than WalMart, are they more or less severe than the ones occurring at WalMart?

When people are making minimum wage and have to work on Thanksgiving, you get a whole lot of "don't give a shit" attitude.  You can't blame the employees for not wanting to get in the middle of that mess.

It's all about organization of the store and the staff.  This Walmart apparently had no plan.  The Target that I went to Thursday night had over 500 people waiting outside.  When they opened the doors at 8pm, there was none of this rush, Hunger Games-style free for all.  Target set up the store in a certain way that discouraged this type of craziness.

Pretty fricken sad.  I live right around the corner from that Walmart and needed to go run and grab a pan real quick to finish dinner, and that was 7 at night, I couldn't even get in the damn store because the lines started.  That is so unfair.  24 hour Walmarts should have some kind or regulations that they will be shutting down at least at 10 for regular customers to reorganize and get the lines set up for the Black Friday shopping not some 6 or 7 when regular customers for groceries need stuff.  How pathetically sad, ghetto type shit cause no one can act right for something they pry won't even use in a few weeks and if they were smart, they'd go online and get the same stuff for CHEAPER!

Wal Mart should be held liable for ever single incident inside of their stores.  This shit has to stop.  There are so many ways to curb this mass histeria and avoid the trampling of people.  If they have 50 Blu Rays, the first 50 people in line who want a Blu Ray get a ticket and get let in the store to be HANDED their BLu Ray.  It could work like this for every big Black Friday doorbuster they have.  But if they want to let people run wild, let em pay a few hundred million in compensation for each fight, death, trampling that happens in their.

Also just stay home, $100 savings isnt worth your life

He he....so true.  The only way the story could have been better is if the incident occurred in Garland or Hurst-or Little Elm.

@observerlibtard Riots are not new at Town East either.  All it takes is for new Air Jordans to get released.  Hilarity ensues.

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul Last year I made the mistake of going to Target on Black Friday, I needed a few groceries. It was stupid packed, but everything was orderly. They had a ton of staff doing crowd control. Why anyone goes to Walmart over Target will always amaze me (and no, I don't work for Target).

Myrna.Minkoff-Katz
Myrna.Minkoff-Katz topcommenter

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul Walmart makes no attempt at crowd control.  Best Buy was letting people in ten at a time and the ones who were first in line received vouchers guaranteeing they would secure the sale item.

you know why they dont give a shit, because asshole shoppers dont give a fuck either and treat them like shit.  Respect the people who would love to be at home with their families but instead are at work allowing the general public to act like hooligans.  SOme of these people are as bad as looters in a riot

P1Gunter
P1Gunter

@ScottsMerkin While I agree about liability, the ticket system will never happen. All of these big box retailers "door buster" items are sold at cost or with a very tiny margin. The entire idea is to get you into the store to buy that item and then buy a bunch of other crap they make regular margin on. If they just handed you the Blu-Ray you would just pay and walk out.

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul @Myrna.Minkoff-Katz I think they keep things a bit chaotic on purpose for the free publicity, ie "WalMart's deals are so good people are literally fighting each other over them", it also plays into why stores like WalMart and Dollar General keep things kinda trashy (if a store looks too "nice" people start to think they're paying too much).
