Klyde Warren Park's Ice Rink Opens Friday

Anyone visiting Klyde Warren Park over the the weekend -- and judging by the crowd at 10 a.m. on Sunday, attendance bordered on nonexistent -- would have been struck by how closely the unbroken white sheet resembled an ice rink. Ironic, given park officials' promise of an actual ice rink, which increasingly seemed like it would go unfulfilled.

The skating rink was initially scheduled to debut early last month, but as the promised opening neared, park officials pushed the date back indefinitely, hedging and equivocating with the agility of a politician who's broken a promise but doesn't want to admit it.

Turns out, our skepticism was unwarranted. Officials announced this morning that the 32-by-100-foot rink, which will be made of a synthetic ice called Super-Glide, will open on the Great Lawn on Friday.

"They were just trying to go through all their options," park spokeswoman Samantha Kurz said of the delay. "They were just trying to consider all the details to see what worked."

The rink is being funded by former Stars owner Norman Green. Skate rentals, $5 during the week and $10 on weekends, will be free on opening day and on every Tuesday through January 31, when the rink closes.

Work crews are beginning installation today, just in time to take advantage of everyone's complete disenchantment with frozen water.

If you want to skate that badly, you've got a couple more days to visit the burbs North of Dallas. Just go skate in the streets.

so we built a park to have more green space downtown and now we are covering it with fake ice.  Next we will have a go kart track installed right?

Dallas -- when we actually do have "well enough," we can't leave it alone.

@jeffreybiehler Its right past the deck park named after muffy's chihuaha and a left past the dick park named after another 6 year old rich brat.  Its all very high minded and confusing to the poor unwashed common folk like us.

@jeffreybiehler Come south on Central all the way from Allen, hang a west on LBJ and proceed to the Preston Road exit. Take it. Go south (left) on Preston for about 3 miles -- past Forest, past Royal -- until, about a half-mile past Royal, where you'll see a street called Meaders. Take a right.  Within one block, you will pass on a bridge over the Tollway, and then, immediately to your left, is  street called Daria Place. On the other side of the gate is the wonderful place called Klyde Warren Park. You need to honk your horn vigorously, repeatedly, in order for the security guard to come let you in -- it's just a traffic-flow measure, no worries, parking is free and it's the coolest park in Dallas. Just don't give up, keep honking and they'll let you in. Of course, if you see a security guard  right there, you can just roll down your window and holler.
