The City of Dallas Removed the White "X" From Dealey Plaza on Monday

Years ago, Dealey Plaza conspiracy man Robert Groden reportedly strolled into the center lane of Elm Street and taped down a white "X" to mark the spot where President John F. Kennedy was struck with the fatal bullet on November 22, 1963. It's actually about about six inches too far west, but it's close enough to be an object of macabre fascination for Dealey Plaza tourists, whose scampering visits to the spot are well documented on Instagram.

No longer. On Monday afternoon, as the city prepared Dealey Plaza for Friday's official JFK commemoration, workers removed the "X."

"We are laying asphalt to level out the streets and remove any trip hazards," city spokesman Frank Librio told The Dallas Morning News' Scott Goldstein. "With thousands visiting the area this week, we think that is prudent."

It's certainly in keeping with the city's attempt to keep the 50th anniversary focused on Kennedy's life rather than on his murder. But prudent? Let's first make sure no one gets mowed down in traffic searching fruitlessly for that phantom letter.

the city should have removed that x the day it appeared. so classless to leave a big x in the middle of the street where kennedy was a shot like it's a treasure map or something.

my final theory is mac wallace fired the fatal shot through the overpass, the fingerprint at the book building was a plant to divert attention from him if it got that far, the rest was a planned smokescreen around that

What kind of idiot would trip over a painted X?

Dallas did some road maintenance and the and as expected the X was removed.  Has anyone said Groden can't redo the X?

It's comical for the city of Dallas to honor Kennedy's life on when it's his MURDER this city is known for. Kennedy didn't work here, he didn't go to school here and he never lived here. HE DIED HERE. Dallas needs to get a grip.

What is wrong with marking the spot where Kennedy got it though his head that the people of Dallas did not like him so much?

The "X" is fairly useful.  After all, how many people do come to Dallas and ask where was Kennedy shot?  Quite a few I imagine.

After all Ford's Theater is still standing.

"level out the streets and remove any trip hazards'

Fuck the 1000s of visitors. What about the rest of the potholed streets and shitty sidewalks.

We need to start placing X's on them so the city can find them

Why did you guys replace the picture of the nut standing on the X?

Who will be the first to put a new "X" down?

Kennedy was killed by a climate of right wing hate, Benghazi was caused by a youtube video, and you can kee your insurance.

@MissMacy On President's day, does Washington DC commemorate the shot in the balcony of Ford's theater?  On MLK, Jr day, does Memphis commemorate the assassination at the Lorraine Hotel?  It is a perverse kind of double standard that Dallas alone is expected to wallow in self-loathing and misery, all because someone famous was killed here.  MLK didn't live work or go to school in Memphis, but they have built a Museum around the Lorraine, commemorating the life and achievements of the man, not a mausoleum enshrining his murder.  Is Kennedy's legacy simply that he was murdered in a city where a city oughtn't be?  Is his legacy a legacy of despair and sorrow?  If not, why should this city be expected to pass the remembrance of his death in such a fashion?

@MissMacy

I worked downtown back in the 80s, and found myself everyday answering tourists' questions about the assassination. I encountered travelers from all over the world. That was the impetus for the establishment of the Sixth Floor Museum. Folks could go somewhere to learn about a subject that they were intensely interested in.

Its more about acknowledging the past and providing accommodation than not having a grip on things.

@ScottsMerkin IE really isn't that bad. I mean it has security flaws, but it works just fine.

@Sharon_Moreanus maybe some white X's on all the South Dallas streets where regular folks died from gunshots would be nice.

@Sharon_Moreanus See: Ross Ave, between Greenville and Downtown. I'm seriously not sure there is a worse street in Dallas, and that's after a half dozen repairs to the street.

@RTGolden1 @MissMacy There is  wreath marking the spot where MLK was shot. And where Lincoln was shot has been preserved. Can't Kennedy have at least an X?  Nothing to do with legacy its a preservation of history.

Ross is a piece of shit from the West End all the way down.  I drive like im drunk switching lanes to avoid the manhole sticking 1 ft above the ground and then the 1 ft deep pothole next.
