Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson: The "Alamo Will Not Go Under UN Control"

The United Nations has already made quite clear that it has no intention of invading Texas, dismissing Lubbock County Judge Tom Head's prediction of blue-clad international forces laying siege to Hub City as "absolutely ridiculous."

It's now clear that UN bureaucrats were hatching an even more insidious plot. Infowars, Alex Jones' online megaphone of truth, sounded the alarm on Tuesday in a piece headlined "United Nations to Take Over the Alamo":

San Antonio, Texas Mayor Julián Castro is currently negotiating with the United Nations to designate the Alamo as a UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site, meaning that a blue UN flag may fly above the historic shrine of liberty once it falls under UN control....

The Alamo Plaza, where most of the fighting took place during the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, is administered by the city of San Antonio.

During the battle, at least 189 Alamo defenders sacrificed their lives for liberty instead of surrendering to the tyrannical Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna.

The Alamo emerged from the battle as a sacred shrine for individual freedom in the face of collective evil.

Now the shrine is besieged by the collective UN, whose policies follow Santa Ana's dictatorial rule rather than the values the Alamo defenders died for "in the name of Liberty, of patriotism and everything dear to the American character" as Alamo Commander William B. Travis wrote in Feb. 1836.

So egregiously misleading was the report that Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, whose natural tendency as a Republican candidate for lieutenant governor would be to bash the UN with comically overheated rhetoric, sent out a press release dismissing it as "horse hockey."

"Some folks might think that getting on this list means the UN has some sort of influence at the Alamo. Those folks must not be from around here," Patterson said in the release. "The people of Texas own the Alamo now and in the future. (Editor's note: Mexico is inclined to disagree). Nothing is going to change that."

He goes on to point out that designation as a World Heritage Site does not imply UN control. It's just lets foreign tourists know that it's a place of historical significance they might like to visit. "That is all," Patterson says, concluding what should stand as the most shockingly reasonable thing a Republican has said in the lieutenant governor's race.

Best remember too, that a UN flag will never fly higher over our Lone Star flag by law...

I so want to  believe that Republicans are just funning around with the media when they say stuff like this.

A proud day in Texas where we can celebrate the fact that a Republican politician says something that is not incredibly stupid.  What does that say about our state?

The quote in the headline has to be one of the all-time keepers, joining "I am not a crook,", "I did not have sexual relations with that woman", "What difference, at this point, does it make", and "If you like. it, you can keep.it"

Look on the bright side.

Once we fall under UN control, then Texas won't have to take any more crap off a Mars.

Would it be possible to have Rick Perry's hair designated as a UN Cultural Heritage Site. I could swear there was a family of endangered whooping cranes nesting in his hair last time I saw him.

He could have been more helpful if he had suggested that the UN also designation the Alamo basement as a World Heritage Site.

Wow.  That's the most reasonable thing Patterson has said in months.

@xdarkridex I understand your elation at somebody decrying Alex Jones as the insane nutjob he is, but Jerry Patterson wanted to sell the Christmas Mountains, adjacent to Big Bend National Park, to a Houston developer ally of his because they were "too expensive to maintain" even though not one cent has ever been spent "maintaining" the Christmas Mountains.

Do not be fooled - Jerry Patterson has led the charge to sell off a LOT of Texas property that rightfully belongs to the People of the State of Texas to fill budget shortfalls caused by the callous disregard for fiscal responsibility shown by his Republican buddies.

Fortunately, we were able to mount a significant effort that saved the Christmas Mountains, but it took us three years and a lot of personal sacrifice to bring that about. We were greatly aided by the Mellon Foundation, which granted the Christmas Mountains to Texas under terms that stated they were to be held in public trust for perpetuity, when they flatly stated that if the Christmas Mountains were sold and no longer public property the Mellon Foundation would never again make any gift of land or money to the State of Texas.

Jerry Patterson is the LAST guy we want in Texas government! His mantra is "Everything to the highest bidder!"
