Chris Arnold Back on the Air at 105.3 The Fan After Plagiarism Episode

Chris Arnold
Chris Arnold has been uncharacteristically quiet. A usually prolific tweeter his account has been dormant for 10 days, and his voice has been missing from The GBag Nation, the midday show he co-hosts on 105.3 The Fan.

CBS Radio hasn't commented publicly on Arnold's absence, but it's no accident that it came immediately after he was caught shamelessly plagiarizing a lengthy piece on Tony Romo.

This wasn't a case where he borrowed a phrase or two and forgot to throw in proper attribution. He cribbed entire paragraphs, more than a dozen, but who's counting? (Answer: Scott Kacsmar, the freelance football writer who penned the original post.)

CBS hasn't exactly cracked the whip. Best we can tell, Arnold's punishment for blatantly stealing the work of another writer and passing it off as his own is a week's vacation. He's back on the air today with the rest of the GBaggers.

Recently departed Fan host Richie Whitt predicted as much last week

"Easy for anyone with a journalism background to call for his firing...But this again proves that sports radio is more about entertainment than information," Whitt writes. "At a newspaper, Chris would be fired. On the radio, he gets a slap on the wrist."

So far at least, the public response from Arnold has consisted of a handful of tweets buttering Kacsmar up ("u sir, are greatness") and inviting him on the radio "to give your your props." The Fan has merely pulled the offending article from the CBS website.

A public admission of guilt and apology is probably in order. Giving Kacsmar Arnold's salary for the week he sat out would be a noble gesture as well.

Um, nobody listens to the FAN?  Everyone I know listens to at least one of the shows.  Yeah, the ticket has some great shows like the Musers, Norm, and Bad Radio, but the Hardline?  Really?  I still listen in every once in a while, but if I hear Corby talk about the Rolling Stones or TV shows one more time I'm gonna freak.    I listen to all of the sports talk stations, but definitely the FAN the most.    The G-Bag nation is great--especially with Chris--, I was just a little disappointed I'm at work now that they're on during the day.    K&C are a great replacement, but I have to admit... will ESPN take back Ben & Skin?   Those guys are the worst on the station.

If you suspend a radio announcer from a station that no one listens to, who would notice?  If it was 105.3 the Fail, then who cares?

Watch out - Chris will start Ticket Tickers. He is reportedly working on his new show names - AC, The Muser, Harder Line, The Today Show, 63 Minutes......

How very fitting that, for commentary on a sports 'journalism' plagiarism case, perpetrated by an unknown mid-day host, on a rapidly declining station, UP turns to Ritchie Whitt.

Whittless, whose one attempt at journalism (that I'm aware of) resulted in a temper tantrum of a hit-piece published in UP, targeting Russ Martin.  Unsure of what to do when people 'in the know' refused to talk to him, Whitt simply made up the story as he went.  Then we all watched smugly as Whitt's own show on the Fan went down in a smoking tailspin, and he characteristically foisted all the blame on his co-host.  While the co-host might very well have melted down, the reason I never listened to the show was Whitt's abrasive and derogatory manner and piss poor analysis.

I'm sure all five people that listen to that station were thrilled.......

Now that The Ticket has a decent FM signal I can't imagine why anyone would listen to it or ESPN.

Don't get me wrong, I love Obama , but what is up with these black folks? It's as if jayson Blair is suddenly the Jackie Robinson of blournalist. Blair, Chris Arnold and is there any doubt Donovan Lewis would struggle constructing a single coherent sentence much less a well thought position , it's as if there is a different set of rules for them .

I get it , in sports where up to 70% of the athletes are black , sports station seek the requisite black on air personalities. But I have to think some light skinned spare from 80's and some house N who let's the white folk clown him constantly , are not the best a talented race of people have to offer.

It is n's like these that make my liberal ass hate black people.

Still love the prez. he smart

Barack Hussien Obama . Like Jesus , but real.

No one listens to that station, and I am sure few visit their website. So who turned him in; the janitor?

It's puzzling that the "sports guys" on The Fan were unfamiliar with Scott's work and their "real sports analysis" listeners couldn't tell that the piece was not in Mr Arnolds' lazy Memphis "hustle and flow" no attempt at structured language dialect.

The "clowns" on the ticket were familiar with mr kacsmar. Scott and Bob Sturm have had frequent exchanges of next level football analysis and even helped each other with their vast collection of vintage recorded games. Hell , the board op was familiar with article that mr Arnold lifted because he read it at Football Outsider when Scott posted it 6-7 months ago .

So which station is the real sports station? Who are the douchebags with the backward ball caps and their old lady in their avatar and the blowhard sports noise and the inability articulate an opinion in an insightful or entertaining wAy without plagiarizing ??

With that said, Donovan Lewis is still a requisite hire and does not deserve his position at the station. If he is paid 3/5 the amount mike sirios is paid , it is a travesty . Go sickle cell!!

@White_Jesus I love the Ticket, I spend most of my day listening to it just switching to KXT or NPR during commercial breaks. That said, it's often not a real sports station. The beauty of the Ticket is that outside of Norm it's a bunch of dudes having what amounts to a conversation at a bar over a few beers. That's the magic that the Fan can't match.....most days the non-sports segments are the best.

Donovan Lewis may have been an equal opportunity hire, and it was a weird transition back in '06 or so when he came aboard, but he adds a lot to that show. I enjoy Donovan's work quite a bit. He's a hell of a lot of a better "minority" hire than Jen Engel was when she was at ESPN and brought absolutely nothing. And he blows Chris Arnold out of the water.

Donovan is a big bag of nothing.  I don't mean to be hurtful to the guy - but he literally brings nothing to the table.  When he speaks it stops down the momentum of the show.  I loved BaD Radio before Donovan and I still listen but he does not add anything to the station but a willingness to fill in and do promotions which other hosts refuse to do. Donovan's shtick is to disagree with Bob about a tangential point then backtrack and end up agreeing with Bob.  He doesn't advance the conversation  - and he's not funny.

@White_Jesus Well now we are having two different conversations. I love the work of Jake Kemp and Sean Bass both, and I hope that when the time comes to replace Norm or the Hardline it is the Shakejoint. I'm the guy that wakes up at 8am on Sundays to listen to it. They are the future of the station.I like Mike Sirois, but I just don't see him carrying a show, and am not a fan of Cash Sirois on the radio most of the time. Mike is good as a producer for Norm, but Cirque can be brutal at times.

As for Donovan, we can agree to disagree I suppose. He's not a yuck monkey like Gordon or Corby, and he never will be. He's just a moderate voice that balances the cynicism and humor of Dan and the seriousness of Sports Sturm while offering a glimpse of another section of society. He also lets them get away with a lot of racial humor that is often hilarious.  I appreciate that personally, and he is fantastic with Norm on the Cowboys post game shows. What's funny is you're not the first person I've heard that dislikes Donovan on-air, and he rarely talks that much. Most of BaDD is Dan being sarcastic, Bob belaboring points, and Donovan occasionally chiming in. Jake probably talks as much as Donovan does on-air.

Do you think the fan would rather have Jake or Donovan ? Mike sirios or Donovan ? Donovan & 5 million dollars or Gordon Keith? Gordon Keith is more valuable than Donovan & 5 mill. Donovan brings nothing .

Remember when Donovan and his family auditioned for the family feud and failed miserably because he has nothing ? On the "family feud" the question was " something that comes out at night". Donovan on the steal pressed for the answer " prostitutes" . On the family feud . He was proud retelling the story on bad radio while everyone was wondering if his black ass understands anything at all

He and his family were not selected

ANY OTHER ON-AIR PERSONALITY AT THE TICKET would be able to carry their family through the audition for the family feud. Imagine Craig miller , corby, or Dan McDowell . Those guys are whitty and smart and would appeal to the producers because they know they would be gold . They are asked to emcee events because they are talented and versatile. Donovan is the kiss of death for advertisers and is never asked to emcee an event .

Those are facts.

Slavery was bad , I know . But white guilt is also a form of servitude
