A Mineral Wells Woman Died from Doing Meth, Crawling into Her Freezer

Categories: Drugs, News

ShannonHerrin.jpg
When Shannon Herrin's teenage son found his mom dead in her garage in August, Mineral Wells police were perplexed. There was no evidence of murder -- no trauma, no signs of a struggle, no one with any apparent reason to want her dead -- and yet there was the indisputable fact that Herrin's body was discovered crammed into her own chest freezer, a place 38-year-old women don't typically wind up of their own volition.

Turns out, there's a surprisingly straightforward explanation: Herrin was really high on meth.

Authorities released the results of Herrin's autopsy on Thursday, which said that she "likely crawled into the freezer while under the effects of methamphetamine," which the fresh puncture wounds on her arm suggests she shot up.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that she grabbed a coat before crawling inside freezer. It wasn't enough to stave off the combination of the "toxic effects of methamphetamine" and hypothermia the medical examiner says caused her death.

So, at the risk of belaboring the obvious here, we offer a piece of advice: don't do meth. It's a helluva drug.

There's a lot of misinformation, dubious conclusions and just flat out wrong comments made here. A little background: I was a hard core drug user for 13 years, pretty much name it and I tried it and/or was addicted to it. I got clean, went back to school and became a substance abuse counselor, for 15 years I worked in one county jail and three state prisons across California, Arizona and Texas. Then I fell and started using again. This time meth was the biggy for me. That lasted for almost 2 years and then I cleaned up, for almost 8 years now. But I remember that horrific drug as though it were yesterday. I can assure you this story is not only plausible but, to me at least, completely believable. As some have previously mentioned sleep deprivation can make a person do strange things. Now mix in shooting up meth and you would not believe what paranoia and hallucinations, both sight and sound, can make a person do. Also shooting it doesn't give you the longer term wakefulness that smoking does and if you've been awake long enough it's easy to shoot, rush for 30 minutes or so and then fall into a coma-like sleep. I've done it many times. So here's the perfectly reasonable scenario I got from the story. A long time user, she shot up regularly and mixing with other drugs she'd been partying for a few days. She did one last hit, maybe too big or just good shit and started tweaking and geeking hard. Started hearing cops (or the FBI, DEA, etc) on their walkie-talkies just outside the house, and saw shadows moving across the window blinds. "They're coming to bust me, got to hide!" Thought of a great hiding place, somewhere they'd never think to look. She crawled in there and grew still and quiet, listening intently, hearing them still out there, maybe even inside the house now. The stillness and quiet, and probably oxygen deprivation, eventually slowed her down and she fell asleep. The end. Also cocaine is cheaper than meth. Nobody who gets high on meth is going to substitute pot or coke, legal or not, the highs and the addictions just don't work that way.Being a long time reader, but only occasional poster here I'm more than acquainted with the assholes and trolls here. Give it your best shot guys, unless you have a kryptonite keyboard you can't get to me.

Thank you @mbcez .  Having someone explain from personal experience what meth use is like is interesting to a non-user like myself.  You opened my eyes to what goes on in the mind of a user, and what non-users might overlook in a case like this.  Tweekers have lots of energy to devote to mindless tasks, i.e. peeling paint, taking apart electronics, cleaning floors with a toothbrush...Perhaps @mcdallas should try meth just to find some mindless activity to occupy himself with instead of bashing someone who's sole intent was to educate those of us who have not traversed the drug path.

I'll never ever understand why anyone, knowing the obvious devastation this drug causes (and they must know) would still go ahead and do it.  I feel so sorry for these people, for their lives must be so painful that they'll destroy themselves for an escape.

Moral of the story.Dont do crystal.Especially if you have kids.A parent who does crystal  meth should be dead & will eventually be becuase they were a terrible parent to begin with.Dont do crysal meth ok andreaskye.

I have never seen a more disgusting display of total disregard for another human or their families as the comments below.
My only other comment is to suggest to those that feed into it to hit the floor once you start throwing those stones. The falling glass from your house could be very dangerous. Unless you are perfect, it is never a good idea to take the chance,
And DO, why would you suddenly be interested in Mineral Wells at all? Oh wait, it is the headline.
Put the word "meth" in the headline, and then follow it  with something equally sensational and you get  "Great Story, Guys".
Why do I let anything surprise me these days?
And DFW, here is one final phrase for you, "Physician, Heal Thyself."

More people should die of crystal meth usage. If animal parts can be used to make glues/adhesives certainly human parts can be used as well.Since so many people love meth,a glue factory should be opened & put honest law abiding americans to work.We dont  have a use for meth heads anyway so this is a great alternative.

rofl the only reason investigators or anyone would consider it an option that she did it of her own accord is that they've never done meth.
Its not acid or Ecstasy, or a hallucinogenic of any kind.  Meth is speed, shes still perfectly coherent enough to know not to crawl into a freezer.  Hell people drunk make worse choices and decisions.
Unless she was retarded enough to hang out in a freezer prior to doing meth, its unlikely shed of done it on meth.  And unless she was mixing the meth with other drugs theres no way it incapacitated her enough to do this on her own, its not PCP for shit sake.

Yes its horrible for you especially the stuff on the streets, and especially when abused, but you have to realize that meth heads don't do shit like this.

Think about this, a woman TWEEKED out all speeded up from meth, crawling into a freezer would not stay there very long, it goes against what the meth does.

If she wasn't chatting her ass off with a friend or entertaining herself somehow shed be far too bored to sit in a freezer alone, you don't take naps on meth let alone in an isolated freezer, and your not in a zombied out daze to where you don't know wtf your doing.

CitzenKim
CitzenKim

Did this woman have a history of meth use?  If not, it seems pretty odd to crawl in a freeze no matter how high you are.  Sure would be a darn good murder plan - shoot her up then put in the freezer - simple, she killed herself.

I've written on a number of discrete reasons as to why the drug war should be immediately abandoned by all jurisdictions within the United States, but meth use and it's concomitant horrors may be the most compelling of a host of compelling reasons to do so. Simply put, who would use meth if they could use marijuana? Who would use meth if they could cheaply and safely purchase cocaine? Who would use meth if they could take pharmaceutical grade ecstasy (MDMA)? Do blanket legal prohibitions against relatively safe drugs lead to people essentially shooting up drain cleaner? Is this a sound public policy choice?

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz Must they know? Our delusions can be our worst enemy. Perhaps she thought she'd just do meth for a little while and quit ... "It won't hurt my life," she thought. "It's just a temporary escape.I

"Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers"

I've seen them out at Soco
They're pounding sixteen penny nails
The truckers on the interstate
Have been known to ride the rails
The sweat is beating on the brow
Can't keep these fellas down
'Cause those damned blue-collared tweekers
Are runnin' this here town

I knew a man who hung drywall
He hung it mighty quick
A trip or two to the blue room
Would help him do the trick
His foreman would pat him on the back
Whenever he would come around
'Cause these dammed blue-collar tweekers
Are beloved in this here town

Now the union boys are there
To protect us from all the corporate type
While curious George's drug patrol
Is out here hunting snipe
Now they try to tell me different
But you know I ain't no clown
'Cause those damned blue-collar tweekers
Are the backbone of this town

Now the flame that burns twice as bright
Burns only half as long
My eyes are growing weary
As I finalize this song
So sit back and have a cup o' joe
And watch the wheels go round
'Cause those damned blue-collar tweekers
Have always run this town

@dsmallwood06 Cause you've tried something don't make you a methhead.  At least knowing the difference might offer an investigator a bit more insight.

Because someone knows what its like to get high, im gonna call them a pothead?
Because someone knows what its like to be drunk, I should call them an alcoholic?

@mbcez Thank you for keepin' it real!! I agree with your post. However, I do believe this could''ve happened the way they reported. Ultimately, sleep deprivation is the main cause for the "geeking out", paranoia, hallucinations, etc. I have known a few  educated, intelligent  people to do some crazy stuff after days with no sleep. Using meth + no sleep= freezer nap turned bad!!

Her poor son, bless his heart.

@mbcez I agree totally with you. If she wasn't mixing the so-called METH with other drugs this is very strange. Only exlplantion for going in the freezer is being hot flashed or paranoid, but they couldn't sit still long enough to stay in the cold. Unless it was a very old freezer, they do not lock up when someone crawls in the container. Strange?

@ThreeOranges its not a very good idea, the stuff is usually so impure you don't wanna bypass your bodys processing of it, and go straight to the vein.  At least snorted or eaten to absorb it your body filters it before going into your bloodstream. It eats away at peoples noses and creates holes.  Ive seen a friends tastebud swell up to like a quarter inch and him have to cut it off the pain was so intense.  You don't really wanna shoot it up and have it eating up your veins lol.  I think people have lost body parts due to doing so.

The US Army gave out methamphetamine to soldiers during WW2.

As with any drug, the possibility for addiction and euphoria from overdosing is extremely high (pardon the pun).

@mcdallas @TheOneandOnly lol you realize he said a hypothetical, reread the statement genius, it says "IF THEY COULD CHEAPLY AND SAFELY PURCHASE COCAINE"

Since you cant, your comment "evidently hundreds of thousands of junkies" does not apply.....

because they don't have the option like the guy suggested.

Hes suggesting legalizing drugs as a problem fix, however he isn't quite up to par with his knowledge of drugs, to attempt to compare them and suggest alternatives!

Do you understand that, or are you still high?

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul @TheOneandOnly

Um, Walgreens and CVS hand it out every day to kids from elementary through high school and beyond.  Adderall, Ritalin, etc. are chemically and functionally identical to "meth" and are prescribed and dispensed to children and adults in ever-increasing numbers.  Anyone recall the nationwide panic last year as the legal meth supplies were stretched thin?  I know its fun to be holier-than-thou but don't kid yourselves - speed is speed (and no, it isn't drain cleaner).

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul @TheOneandOnly

I've heard from people that would know that that practice did not, in fact, end in WWII but continued long after.

Euphoria and hallucinations are not the only detrimental effects that drugs can have upon a person. I've  read that Japanese Kamikaze pilots were routinely given methamphetamine. It was implied that doing so made them feel invincible and courageous in the face of the types of missions they were expected to fly and how they would ultimately end.

TheOneandOnly
TheOneandOnly

Perhaps, but the query is whether public policy has a hand in driving persons seeking a drug high to choose meth's high over another, relatively safer high. Keep in mind that many of the problems associated with drug use/abuse are directly related to the illegality of drugs.

and trying something doesnt make you an expert on that thing and all it's possible effects. long term use is far different from occasional experimentation. Its perfectly plausible that a habitual user might crawl into a freezer for any number of delusional reasons.

mbcez

@TheOneandOnly rofl meth isn't a high like weed man.  Its more of like 10 cans of redbull without the vomiting and headache.
Its a form of speed, and gives users a bit of an endorphin increase but any euphoria is very minimal. It will give you a huge energy boost depending on how much you use, make you feel like talking Nonstop, and like your thoughts are the thinking of Einstein.

You don't do meth to get high, you do it to prolong highs of other drugs your using with it, and to prolong your ability to do more of them, or you do it to keep going cause your body is so deprived you need the speed to keep going on your daily routine.
