An Opera Singer Was Robbed and Beaten En Route to Practice at Fair Park, Police Say

John Boehr, a 31-year-old opera singer from Carrollton, says he was violently mugged Thursday afternoon as he walked to choir practice in South Dallas.

The attack happened at 3:10 p.m., as Boehr was en route to the Dallas Opera's rehearsal facility at 4301 S. Fitzhugh, on the far eastern edge of Fair Park. He told police that he was using the 2900 block of Lagow Street as a shortcut when two men approached and, without introduction, began punching him in the face. A witness saw them slam a brick or rock into his face several times.

They made off with the gym bag he was carrying, $15 in cash, and his score to Dallas Opera's upcoming production of Bizet's "Carmen," in which he is cast in the role of Morales.

Boehr's face was swollen, and he suffered a deep gash on his head. An ambulance took Boehr to Baylor Hospital, where he was interviewed by police as he waited to have his head wound stitched up.

Boehr is a baritone who appeared most recently in the Fort Worth Opera's production of La Boheme. Theater Jones praised his "bright baritone voice and fine acting ability." He has also made numerous cameos on the Barihunks blog, which features "the sexiest baritone hunks from opera."

Dallas Opera spokeswoman Suzanne Calvin offered the following statement via email:

We're all terribly upset about this horrifying incident involving one of our guest artists but, because we haven't been able to speak to John, we have no further details to offer about the attack which occurred yesterday. John David Boehr is making his Dallas Opera debut in the role of Morales, an officer, in our production of Bizet's "Carmen" opening on October 25th in the Winspear Opera House. Rehearsals just got underway this week and John lost his "Carmen" score in the assault, among other things. He has family here in Dallas who are supervising his recovery and medical care.

You just wait, Eric, you naive white-guilt "progressive" libtard propagandist. You've already had an up close and personal exprience with Random Divershitty when you were riding your hipster bike along Santa Fe Trail. Just wait until your kids get older and they realize all the damage you've done with your naive reality-ignoring "progressive" libtard propaganda. They're going to hate your guts. Hey, no big deal, your loved ones getting raped and robbed and killed is just part of dismantling white privilege. Enjoy the future you wasted so much time helping to create, naive or disingenuous asshole.

It's becoming very clear why we used to punish those so-called "people" with ropes and trees. We may need to start doing that again to finally destroy the out of control violence and criminality committed by these ape-faced subhuman savages.

Eric Nicholson, as a "progressive", especially a "progressive" in the media, you should be celebrating!

This was a great blow struck for social justice.

These strong oppressed social justice warriors of color were just helping the white guy get ready for the coming "progressive" future by forcibly dismantling his white privilege for him.

Speak truth to power! Exterminate whiteness!

The level of stupidity and ignorance that has been displayed in these comments leaves me completely slack jawed that so many people have reached adulthood without accidentally killing themselves with their toasters...

Threads like this remind me why I am so happy I will never have to live in Dallas. What is wrong with some of you people?

Odds are I will never meet this guy, and the odds are overwhelming that I will never see his work as to me opera is about the only thing more boring than musicals. That said, I wish him a swift recovery. That really can be a rough neighborhood, especially during summer before it cools down (I used to work down there).

Henryquince

Um, what? A man is beaten up and the comments are all directed to 'the bad neighborhood' and 'most likely gay.' This is sad. A MAN WAS ATTACKED IN BROAD DAY LIGHT. That this the sad point of this article. Whether or not he was in a good neighborhood, or whether or not he's gay or not (which I know for a fact he is not) is irrelevant. Seriously people. Get a grip. And possibly a life.

Btw- assuming all opera singers are gay is like me assuming because you like working on cars that you beat your wife. Complete and utter nonsense

You would think that it would be safe anywhere at 3 PM, but sadly, it's not.  I hope he can recover in time to sing.

You know, assaulting another person is just wrong, every time, no matter who is involved.

Folks, just want to remind you that John is a real person with friends and family who love him and are worried about him. Can you sound off somewhere else?

so judging from the comments a white man should not walk through a black neighborhood - sounds to me like white people should have a peaceful protest, after all if it was the other way round, there would be protest after protest.

(don't know this for sure, but given his profession, he is most likely gay - don't jump down my neck, I said most likely, but not for sure - should it not be a hate crime if he is?)

Just bulldoze that awful neighborhood and start over.

I hope he makes a quick and full recovery.  Looking at the map, however, the 2900 block of Lagow is far from the Opera Rehearsal Hall and looks like quite a depressed neighborhood.  I question his judgment in using that "shortcut".

@TheHonestTruth Only a coward makes statements like that while hiding behind a false name--just like the cowards who hid under white hoods and sheets in lynch mobs.

Still wondering why opinion on how boring opera and musicals are are relevant to this conversation.

Does it hurt to be this stupid? Seriously. If so, you must live in an absolute maelstrom of fibromyalgia level agony based upon the ignorance and ass hattery that is that comment.

@whocareswhatithink You, who are so much a coward to not post your image are a J@ck***, just because he is male and in the Arts automatically make him gay? REALLY!?! The stereotypewriter must be working at full speed at your home. I'm a male opera singer and I am as far from gay as could possibly be. Your sign on name is quite correct Who cares what (YOU) think.

ScottsMerkin

@whocareswhatithink just because someone is gay and gets beat up, doesnt automatically make it a hate crime.  Seems like these asshats would have beat the shit out of anybody that they came across.  Also, what if the 2 black men who did this were gay.  Would you still call it a hate crime?

@lakewoodhobo They were going to when Judge Margaret Kelliher stepped in and got it blocked off the ballot because she was afraid a Cowboys Stadium referendum would bring too many Democrats to the polls and she would lose her job. People blame Laura Miller, but it was all Margaret Kelliher. Instead of the Deathstar in Arlington we would have a massively upgraded Cotton Bowl (which the city paid for anyway) and the neighborhoods around Fair Park would either be parking lots or restaurant/bar areas which sadly would have been a giant improvement.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz Lagow is 5 blocks away from the REHEARSAL space, we aren't talking about the performance space.  Besides: ANYONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO WALK ANYWHERE, AT ANY TIME!

whocareswhatithink

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz I find this funny coming from you - should we not be able to walk through any neighborhood we darn well please without fear of who lives there because they are "mostly black and run down". I have a feeling you would be singing a different tune if it was a black man walking through a "white" neighborhood and got beat up

If you'd read my comment, I referred to the thread, not the articles. In my "utopia", we express concerns over someone's well being when something like this happens, not "told ya so"s and comments on the person's likely sexuality.

@FlorencePike What the hell comment are you reading???  He simply said that to him (not you, or the world in general) opera is boring.  No insult.  He even wished him a speedy recovery.  Take a pill.

Fucking racist, what is wrong with YOU?

P1Gunter
P1Gunter

@whocareswhatithink @Myrna.Minkoff-Katz It has nothing to do with skin color but everything to do with poverty. Having dark skin doesn't make one more prone to committing crime no matter what TV tells you.

One of my hobbies is going to old cemeteries, and Oakland Cemetery is possibly the best in this city. It's at the corner of MLK and Malcolm X(formerly Oakland). That said, as a white guy driving down there I fear the cops (who assume a white guy in a Volkswagen Rabbit is there to buy drugs) far more than the locals. Shit happens and there are bad people, but race is irrelevant.

FlorencePike
FlorencePike

The one where he took the time to insult the guys profession before he wished him well. I do believe that falls under the category of unnecessarily rude in any society outside of Internet anonymity.

Example: "oh you work in finance? What a selfish money grabbing job filled with soulless dick heads! Sorry this happened though"

See? Lame and unnecessary.

FlorencePike

You say "he deserved it" with no explanation and someone responds with "what is wrong with you?" and you think they are being racist? Seriously? Are you still learning how to tie your shoes?
