Noted Homophobe David Barton May Challenge John Cornyn in Republian Primary

Categories: Politics

Congressman Louie Gohmert has made it abundantly clear that he will resist Tea Party calls for him to run against Senator John Cornyn in this spring's GOP primary. No matter. Conservative activists have reportedly turned their attention to another candidate they hope can dethrone the upper chamber's No. 2 Republican, who has made the transformation from hardcore conservative to squish with remarkable speed.

The Tea Party's new champion, according to the National Review, is David Barton, the discredited pseudo-historian/Glenn Beck bestie from Aledo. The magazine quotes Rick Green, "one of Barton's closest advisers," saying in an email that "more than 1,000 (zero exaggeration, that is an actual number) tea party and republican party leaders have asked David Barton to run."

"David Barton will not 'seek' this office," Green adds, "but if the people of Texas speak loud enough in the next few days, he could most certainly be drafted in by the voters."

Backing up Green's assertion are quotes from a couple of Texas activists -- JoAnnFleming of Grassroots America We the People and NE Tarrant Tea Party's Julie McCarty -- saying they'd be thrilled if Barton entered the race.

So what type of senator would Barton make? Hard to know exactly, given that he's never held public office, but his persona suggests he'd pair a Ted Cruz-like inflexibility with a laser-like focus on social issues. Judging by Right Wing Watch's voluminous David Barton archive, he would be particularly committed to defending Americans' right to bear tanks, bazookas and fighter jets, making offensively broad and ill-informed pronouncements about homosexuality, and returning the country to its imagined Biblical roots.

Whether Barton will accept the Tea Party's invitation remains to be seen. He has until December 9 to make up his mind.

The biggest homophobes are actually Muslims in Arab countries. They slit the throats of homosexuals. That is HATE!  But no leftist ever protests violent Islam. That's because between Leftists and violent Islam, there is a much greater bond, hatred of the United States.

This guy is really cute.  I doubt he has ever been near a vaginal cavity, but he is still cute in that perverted Robert Jeffress way.  Like someone that is in need of finding that right spot in his prostate which has an itch that can't be silenced by spewing bigotry.  '

I would highly suggest he visit Paris Adult Book Store on Harry Hines (he can ask Sister Jeffress for the address, and pick up the small starter kit that comes with a free tube of EZ glide.  He will be so much happier and still cute.

What can we do to help make this happen? Why should Cornyn get a pass from the Left or the Right?

Could someone please define "homophobe"?

Noted liars of the Dallas Morning News blog labeled David Barton as a homophobe.  Your bias is showing.  Is that an example of your journalistic integrity?  How about "noted pedofiles and perverts of the Dallas morning news blog, who like to sleep with gerbils, impunged the integrity of a potential candidate because he doesn't share their left wing extremist anti american views.

I have heard Rafael Cruz speak, and you may be right about his age.  I was almost certain that I was listening to George Washington,  Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, or maybe Francis Marion (the Swamp Fox)

Cruz's rotted-out old man is helping to sink the GOP even faster:

Rafael Cruz, father of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), told a tea party group in 2012 he thinks President Barack Obama should go "back to Kenya."

This is the basic case of appealing to those who vote instead of appealing to the voters.  After all, you don't have to have a majority of voters in order to win an office, only a majority of those who vote.

As far as the comments about Texas having open primaries, just remember that for your vote to truly count, you must show up at the precinct caucus after the polls close and vote in the party caucus.

Why are republicans so blatantly attempting to self destruct? I mean, I know we are gerrymandered to almost certainly be forced to have a republican representative no matter how we vote; but these "leaders" they are pushing on us.....discredited historians? Noted homophobics? Half Cu an Canadians? Men that haven't done anything with their lives except recieve money from the Koch Bros? I mean, come on! Stop being the stupid party. The Sarah Palins and the David Bartons are sabotaging the republican party beyond all else. It's no wonder the rest of the country treats Texas like a joke. Every republican candidate for lieutenant governor is pushing to repeal the 17th amendment (direct elections for our representstives rather than state legislators picking them for us, a big surprise when their party is losing popularity with its voters). Our legislators passed one of the strictest abortion laws in the country that would have allowed five abortion clinic for over 12 million women (until it was ruled unconstitutional). Extreme voter ID laws (also found to be unconstitutional) that specifically target only those that would vote independent or liberal. I mean, really who pushed the self destruct button? Why are they pushing for the most extreme agendas that scare away and appall all voters except for the minority Christian extremeist groups? It's embarrassing, really. FoxNews and the new Conservatives. I can't believe I'm saying this, but because of the stupidity of the Ted Cruz's and the David Dewhurst's I'm ready to see this state go Blue.

Given Texas's dismal voter turnout of 36% (lowest in the nation), it's not altogether impossible for another right-wing lunatic to win office.

The label "homophobe" works the same as other tools used by the uber left such as the classics "racist" and "bigot."

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul

not quite sure what you mean to say, but the votes cast in the primary election decides who will be on the ballot in the general election. every vote cast during the primary ballotting is counted regardless if that voter appears at the precinct caucus, and the caucus does not determine who the party's nominee will be, the party candidate who receives the greatest no. of votes will be the nominee.

The rest of the country knows full well that Texas is anything but a joke. Actually it's an example of how to stay solvent and retain a good economy in these hard times.

The GOP isn't trying to self destruct - it's just failing to differentiate itself from the socialist policies of the Left.  The ones in charge right now are governing against the will of the people and until the republicans can learn how to capitalize on that, you're right - they will continue to sink.   Go Tea Party!

@scerinjen3 Dipshit, you're too stupid to understand, but the crony capitalism that you support is socialism for a few rich people, while the resources of the state are squandered.   A case in point is the deregulation of electricity, which has siphoned off profits to the NY financiers who've literally bankrupted the country.   Perhaps you'd argue to let them fail.  I guess you you don't want electricity.  And, I expect you to cheer when you're taxed through your electric bill to bail them out.  Your simpleton arguments are inadequate for complex policy.  And, you're fool, and joke falls on all of us.

@scerinjen3

is that "against the will of the people" like the 65 million who re-elected Obama? 8 out of 10 citizens have an unfavorable opinion of the tea party.

the citizens of this great country clearly reject the no compromise, our way or we burn the house down positions of the radical right.

it will be wonderful for the tea party to think like you outline in your post, for it will marginalize them even further in the future.

@Chuck_Schick @Myrna.Minkoff-Katz Cornyn is a clown too.  We'd be better off with an utter tool than one that can occasionally sound sane.  I think you're falling for a good cop/bad cop routine.  Further, an utter Tbag might stand a better chance of getting a dem a fair shot in the election

@Chuck_Schick  I'm scolding people of my own Democratic bent for not registering and voting in the general elections.  Demographically, we're close to being able to turn Texas into a Blue State... but, only if we register and vote.

@ruddski Nice to see yet another example of you vomiting out your partisan drivel.

On a related note, what if your party continues to push lunatics as candidates and causes further divide? Is this going to help the GOP?

We need a balance of power, and even though I don't identify with either party, I strongly dislike seeing the GOP implode due to infighting, ignorance, and funding by people who DON'T have your best interests in mind.

Now try that in Spanish. On a related note, what if, after the man from Illinois frees the illegals, they don't vote?
