A Muslim Woman Says a Garland TGI Fridays Snuck Bacon in Her Tea

Categories: Religion

NicoleQueenGoogle.jpg
There's no shortage of bacon at TGI Fridays. The restaurant drapes it on just about everything -- burgers, potato skins, salads, you name it. Nicole Queen, as a practicing Muslim, avoids the stuff religiously, as do the friends with whom she recently dined at the outlet in Garland's Firewheel Town Center. That's why they sent back the Cobb salad they'd ordered, asking for the bacon to be removed.

A simple enough request that, as she related in a Facebook post and, last night, on WFAA, was met with ill-disguised disdain.

"It was kind of like being taken care of behind bars," Queen told WFAA's Jobin Panicker of the experience.

Nevertheless, the Cobb salad reemerged from the kitchen bacon-free, and the friends finished the meal. Here's what happened next, according to her Facebook post:

So then at the end of our lunch a diff waitress finished our check. She asked if I would like a Togo cup of ice tea. I said sure and she presented me with a foam cup and straw already in it with the top part of the wrapper still in tact. I got in the car and took off the top wrap and took a sip, instead of tea I got a mouth of BACON!!!

She marched back inside and confronted the manager.

[I] told him what happened and his reply was just deny deny deny. Oh I don't think anyone did that on purpose...blah blah. Really? So someone accidentally stuck bacon into the straw and stuck in my cup and placed the wrapper back on top, for the girl in the scarf? Yeah total accident that it happens to be bacon.

It's worth pausing here to point out that Queen wasn't born a Muslim. She grew up Baptist, wandered away from the church, became a hard-partying nightlife photographer, working for a time as resident picture-taker at Ghost Bar, then, during a period of intense soul-searching, she met Hassan, her future husband. She converted to Islam and donned the hijab six years ago.

She has told this story frequently, on her blog, as a member of the Islamic Speakers Bureau, and Al Jazeera Arabic. So the lede on WFAA's story, which says that that Queen "never wanted the attention," is a bit misleading.

That said, she also never wanted a mouthful of bacon.

Fridays has apologized and told WFAA that it's conducting an investigation into the incident and "will take any appropriate actions necessary based on the findings."

If people chooses to follow an ideology that requires bizarre eating habits it is not the responsibility of the normal world to take extraordinary steps to accommodate them.  Prepare your meals at home you oh-so-special, superior elitist twit!

"It's worth pausing here to point out that Queen wasn't born a Muslim." Why was this pertinent or "worth" anything? The server or cook or whoever was wrong. Period.

As a practicing Muslim, I have encountered prejudice in all manner of restaurants. From my perspective, I can understand where someone may have forgotten to ask that bacon be removed from an entrée. For me, my weekday lunches are mostly eaten with haste, as I work fulltime and I'm enrolled in college courses fulltime. I have forgotten to ask about that as well and had to send back my food. As for bacon in a straw, that's never happened to me. I have experienced serves refusing to serve me because of my blatant religious choices (hijab). I also had a server try repeatedly to serve me pork.

I understand that not all servers are like this, but that can't account for every personality type in the industry.

It seems kind of odd to me that WFAA presented such a half baked news segment  about this.  Even the DO author thinks that WFAA's position is tenuous.  Many muslims work in restaurants such as this or have franchises, serve as managers,  waitspeople, etc.  What is the point of saying "there is a great deal of hate against muslims in our society" except to cause trouble? What exactly  are you doing to make it better?  Anyway I can't go along with this agenda.  I'm out of here--shame on you!

It's completely plausible that the customer was a totally unreasonable sanctimonious bitch AND the server and cook were dumbass anti-muslim redneck assholes.  Both types exist in large enough quantities that sometimes they'll encounter each other.

While I was sceptical of the veracity of Ms. Queen's complaint due to the lack of anything verifying that it occured as she outlined, a couple of things cross my mind:

- she is not pursuing any claims against TGIF, therefore a motive of greed doesn't exist.

- the question of if she originally ordered the salad to be without bacon isn't answered.

- a muslim ordering a meal in a restaurant that is not 100% halal isn't an issue, several of my friends do not keep kosher but they do not eat pork or shellfish either.

- the idea that some childish TGIF workes actually did put some bacon in the drink is certainly possible, be it because Queen was not an ideal customer due to her complaint on the salad, or just because there is a great deal of hate against muslims in our society.

- in the WFAA story it's mentioned the drink was taken from her by the manager, so there is a valid reason there aren't any photos.

As a server putting herself through college with serving jobs (we call themm servers now, lying Lady, not a waitress), and experience of a decade in the industry, I can tell you this woman's claims are grade A, 100% bull.

We work for tips. That means that no, we don't judge anyone wearing Muslim dress, or any other thnic or religous based garb, when we see them we try to go out of our way to accommodate them, so we get paid. Any eyerolls or staring she claims were directed at her didn't happen. Trust me, we want to get tipped. When she sent back the cobb salad with bacon on it (if she is so adaament about her upkeeping her religious standards, why didn't she bother reading the menu that indicates bacon as one of the garnishes of the salad) they remade it for her immediately. What exactly does she think that caused such anger in the serverss that they would attack her? Trust me, she eassnt worth jeopardizing their tips or job.

Now to the bacon in the straw. Man. That didn't happen, no way. When the server brought her the to go drink with the top of the straw still cappedd with the straw's covering, she didn't spend ten minutes attempting to stuff bacon bits in a straw to return to her in her to go tea. Nope that server simply made her a Togo tea to ensure she had a good experience after having to have her food remade because she didn't bother to read the menu. Servers leav the covering on the top of the straw to show guests respect and cleanliness, so that no one else has drank from it. After reading this article I attempted to out thew paper part of a straw back on the tip, sand yeah, that's no easy.

In this time of screaming discrimination if a Christian bookstore doesn't carry lbgt erotica novels, this kind of story is no surprise. But tell me, if it had really haappened, why didn't the lying Lday bring back the bacon filled tea, or question why the server took the hypothetical ten or fifteen minutes it would have taken to stuff a straw full of bacon backs and return it to the gues, why didn't she bring that tea back in? Because it never happened. And sadly, some poor server who probably didn't get tipped by this crazy hard partying now converted Muslim woman who was just aching to get attention for discrimination probably lost her job. She should be ashamed, but shame probably isn't one of the feelings this liar feels.

No one out bacon in her drunk. No one discriminated against her. That's why she's mad.

@rrb0100

Does the phrase "fast food" mean anything to you?

Most restaurants have a lunch menu for a reason.   It is a preset menu that allows the restaurant to serve a large number of people in a very short period of time.  Most restaurants just plain don't have the time to be able to handle a non-menu item in the fast paced rush of the lunch hour.   The waiter says "give me a #6; hold the bacon"  The chef hears "give me a #6" as he is probably assembling 10 meals at once.

Next time do yourself and everyone else, don't order something that comes with pork.  You will be much happier.

Now what about that knife that the chef used to cut the pork and your meal?

Okay look. People who work in the service industry are no just childish. I'm a student studying microbiology and pursuing my education whole heartedly. I also pay my bills as a server. The idea that an adult server put bacon in someone's drink is ridiculous. We are taught in the service industry to bear any personal beliefs aside at work, and those that don't adhere are fired. Clearly you'd never had to work in the service industry.

The wfaa taking the time to mention the drink was taken away by the manager is not a valid reason for photo. On Mrs Queens facebook update, blog updates, website updates and Twitter updates, sshe is constantly sharing on social media, including her bogus story. If there was bacon bits. She would have taken a photo and shared it. She didn't because there werrent any.

The notice of greed is for more attention to her. Have you visited her website, blog, her website about her story, her Twitter or facebook page? She is a media hound, and propegates the idea of the hatred of Islam in America. I don't experience that, so I have no say on how that is. But it is very feesible that her made up story was just to get her more attention.

Think twice before you call all servers childish. Or to perpetuate the idea that we would do something like that. On my ten years in the industrtt I have never witnessed anything that qualifies as bigotry or the pranks of spitting in people's drinks, etc. We WANT to keep our JOBs, because it is a job, just like anyone else and since on a daily basis, we encounter the entire diversity of the public, we choose not to discriminate against the people who pay pur bills.

It would have taken a lot of effort for one server to go into the kitchen where servers generally are not allowed, stheal bacon bits and put them in a straw and then put them in Mrs. Queens drink. The supposition that she was not an ideal custommer because she sent back a salad in absurd, irresponsible and should be disregarded. We do not prank people for sending back food. We make an effort to bring it back correct so we still get a tip, the thing that pays our bills. And again, we don't attack anyone based on their Faith, a lot of servers wouldn't care if you were a devil worshipper they just want to take care of you and get tipped for it. No one dis this to this insane, narcissist. She will be costing a poor girl her job. She will be causing controversy to TGIF for her one goal, to get more fame to her career and to make herself of victim. She never said she told ANYONE she was Muslim. Most people don't just asse because you're wearing a scarf ovee tour head that youre Muslim, especially not a server, since we encounter every faith, race, sexual orientation, you name it, as pur guests daily than most people are in their lifetimes. Don't ever call a worker childish because you don't respwect their position in society, that makes you a bigot.

@finnmf89 I worked for a few restaurants when in my late teens....at a Lonestar Steakhouse I saw a MANAGER try to scoop a crab cake off the floor to serve it on a busy weekend night, granted, not to be malicious, she was just trying to avoid making another because she's the one who dropped it.  Luckily for that customer, she couldn't make it NOT look like it had fallen on the floor so it was discarded.

As servers, we had access to the kitchen. There was even a bowl of bacon bits (to be used as toppings) which was only about 10 feet away from the fountain machine, cups & straws.

I know a man who was fired from a server position because he spit in a customer's drink.

I once watched a Wendy's employee pick his nose (while wearing gloves) just before reaching in to scoop up some fries.

These things happen, I suppose you've just been lucky enough not to see it.

Do you have any idea how many halal restaurants there are in DFW? You probably don't have any idea. There are virtually none that will sell me a Caesar salad. Now name how many restaurants will put bacon on a Caesar salad. Quite a few. These days, a Muslim girl is hard pressed to find any restaurant that doesn't sell any pork products. It's not realistic.

Lets address your comments about utensils. I have worked in a kitchen before as a line cook. Technically, you have to wash something before you use it on any other products. For instance, if I slice beef with one knife, I either wash it or get another knife to cut pork. Cutting boards, they use a certain board for veggies and another for meat to reduce cross contamination.

Next time, do your research and come up with an intelligent argument.

No one was proven to be disrespected. These are allegations. If you had bothered to tread the story you would understand that. Someone saying in an anecdotal story that something happened to them is not fact. And I'm exercising my right to share my experience in this died for a decade. Remember the word allegedly. The idiot who made up this story is a narcissistic drama queen, you'd realize that if you had bothered to read her websites blogs and facebook, not too mention her profoundly vicious Twitter. Yet you call a server an idiot. And the server who allegedly put bacon in the tea was not Queens server who recieeved the tip. You should try rereading the story befoe you make ignorant quips.

Why the sarcasm?  Why order something that contains a food item that you don't want to eat?

Friday's is what is known as a fast order restaurant.  it is not really set up to handle special menu requests.  A special menu or meal request requires that a waiter (actually a server in Friday's case) monitor the food prep in the kitchen and sometimes actually assemble the meal.

Servers at restaurants such as Friday's are expected to turn their tables within  a set period of time and to service the maximum number of tables at their station.

Next time you are in a restaurant such as Friday's, Chili's etc.  Watch your server.  You will see that they are spending 100% of their time taking orders and bringing food from the kitchen.  During a meal time rush they will rarely stop moving.

there's probably about the same number of kosher restaurants as there are halal restaurants.

Ok, how many halal restaurants are there in the DFW area?

If there aren't that many, then I guess that there is not much of a demand for it.

As far as washing utensils, strict kosher adherence for a kitchen requires completely separate utensils and cookware for meat and dairy.

A Priest and a Rabbi were, by coincidence, sitting next to each other on a long flight.

About an hour passes and not a single word was exchanged by the two men. Finally, the Priest turns to the Rabbi and says, "Rabbi, may I ask you a personal question"? The Rabbi said, "Of course"

"I understand that many Rabbis keep kosher and don't eat bacon or ham". The Rabbi acknowledged that. "Haven't you ever even tasted bacon or ham?", asked the Priest.

The Rabbi explained, "Many years ago, I was a visiting Rabbi in a small town in the middle of nowhere and found myself in a diner one Sunday morning. There was no one around so I ordered bacon and eggs. It was quite good but that was the only time that ever happened."

After some time, the Rabbi turned to the Priest and said, "Father, do you mind if you ask you a very personal question"? The Priest said OK.

"You Priests take an oath of celibacy, right"?, asked the Rabbi. "Why, yes", answered the Priest, wondering where this was going.

"Well, haven't you ever had sex?", asked the Rabbi. The Priest answered very softly, "As a young parishioner I was approached by a troubled woman who was looking for my guidance. She was a beautiful, young woman and one thing led to another. So, yes, just once I had sex with a woman".

the Rabbi leans over to the Priest and says, "A lot better than pork, isn't it?"
