A Hit-and-Run Driver Mowed Down a 7-Year-Old Dallas Boy on His Birthday

Categories: Crime, News

LorenzoHitandRun.jpg
On Saturday afternoon, Lorenzo Cantu was playing with friends in the backyard of his home in the 3100 block of Conroe Street while his mother made preparations for his birthday party. At some point, he left the backyard and wandered across the street and greeted a dog who was sniffing around by the tennis courts.

The boy's return trip happened to coincide with the passage of a lumbering white pickup. He darted from behind a parked car straight into its path. The truck hit him, then kept driving, leaving Lorenzo laying motionless in the street.

The whole episode was caught by a home surveillance video, which NBC 5 included in its report on the hit-and-run. Fastforward to the 1:20 mark for the clip, but be forewarned that it's jarring viewing.

The story, though, has a relatively happy ending. The driver of the pickup remains at large, facing possible charges of failing to stop and render aid and child abandonment, but Lorenzo escaped with his life, suffering a concussion and broken toes. They didn't seem to be bothering him much on Sunday, when he celebrated his birthday in the hospital.

"He has got the best present there is right now," Lorenzo's grandfather, Oscar Andrade, told NBC 5. "He has another chance of life."

Regulating human behavior can be a bit tricky. Now that we have made the penalties for DUI/DWI as punitive as they are, we can expect more hit-and-run incidents. Once upon a time, the shame and stigma attached to the act of abandoning one's accidental victim in the street--especially a child--would have stopped almost any driver. We don't live in that world anymore. Maybe we should consider raising the penalties for hit-and-run drivers to some level above those for drunk driving, if such a thing is possible. That, or teach our children to love others as much as they love themselves. But I again digress into social commentary.

Who knew there were so many home surveillance cameras?

I have had verbal confrontations and emailed a homeowner's group over drivers hauling a## down my street.  One guy even said, 'street bumps and signs' would be a 'major irritation and eyesore'.

In many driver's feeble, egocentric minds, streets are just a nuisance in their getting to their destination and any life form is an irritating obstruction.  You don't have to have children to be pi##ed angry at these ignorant, oblivious and/or immoral, unsafe criminals.

Find them, punish the maximum extent.  Slow down on residential/city streets.  Your right to be in an hurry or late is not existent compared to the life of another human.

Wow, I get that seven year olds know about crossing the street, but they're seven and sometimes they don't think.  Some of you here are acting like the kid deserved to die because he made a mistake, and pretending the truck driving off after hitting a kid is an innocent victim.

It's a miracle.  Thank God.  I saw this video on the news and had nightmares.

you know if parents would watch there kids more closely this wouldn't happen.. I see kids daily in our neighborhood that run across the street and never look or stop they just dart out... and I keep telling my friends you better watch the kids they don't have enough since to stop and look... I'm sorry for the kid that got hit and glad he is fine but if the parents don't start telling there kids to stay out of the street or stop and look 1st this will happen time and time again... WAKE UP PARENTS AND TEACH YOUR KIDS.... OR YOUR'S MIGHT BE NEXT ONE TO GET HIT...

"He has another chance of life."

And now the parents have a second chance of parenting.

I know I'd rather get hit myself than run over a kid. That said, the driver in this case probably never saw the child, the impact no worse than the ordinary pot hole.

I've seen way too many kids running around this past summer with no respect for traffic.

ozonelarryb
ozonelarryb

A Dallas cop did that. Killed the kid, blamed it on dead streetlights he was too lazy and stupid to report, then got promoted to the 'intelligence' division.

It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to find a specific pickup with a specific trailer.

ruddski

It's so hard to watch your children these days, and a seven year old child can't possibly understand cars and roads and stuff. And the driver, who you can bet is not a bona-fide registered cowboy, probably has a small penis, hence the pickup he has absolutely no use for. Goddamned Republicans.

@jamessavik If the driver never saw the child he needs to be driving a smaller vehicle.  Either way this driver is a serious safety hazard.

@jamessavik kids running around with no respect for traffic?

how about vehicles in residential areas being driven by people  with no respect for pedestrians?

Keep it real.

@robbysalz @jamessavik you keep it real. If I hadn't been on my toes this summer, I would have nailed four or five brats that weren't paying attention.

This kid sailed out in the street without looking. End of story. A sad story but no ones fault but his own.

@robbysalz  @tdkisok Geez... you people are losing it. He ran right into the truck. It was a MISTAKE. Can't blame either party until we know the driver intentionally left the scene after realizing he hit a child. If that is the case, then you have a case. Till then, shut the fuck up.

@robbysalz @jamessavik When I watch that video I have a hard time seeing anything that the driver did wrong.

The kid was not visible to the driver as he was running toward the street, he may have been visible for a split second before the truck hit him, but there is no indication the driver saw him. The kid would not be visible over the hood of a Ford HD truck, he was below the hood line. There is no way the driver felt the impact in that large truck, especially with a trailer yanking on the back. And I can't tell the speed, but it doesn't appear he was going excessively fast for a neighborhood street.

So, while I get that the cops would like to question the driver, I don't get the outrage at the driver. How did the driver show no respect for pedestrians?

@Admonkey @alteredjustice Yes, I'm sure literally every person with a white ford truck in Dallas pulls down that street on a regular basis and has the exact same trailer and modifications as that truck. You got me.

@JMumf @robbysalz @tdkisok I was once rear-ended in rush hour on I-35.  The driver who hit me had her foot slip on the brake pedal, and she hit the gas pedal instead.  It was very clearly a mistake.

She was still responsible for the accident.  She was still given a citation for failure to maintain an assured clear distance.

If a truck hits a kid in a residential area, the truck driver is at fault.  Mistake or not.

@JMumf @robbysalz @tdkisok If some clown is unaware that he hit a human being, he shouldn't be driving.  Kind of like the tools you read about every day who accidentally shoot themselves or others.  They shouldn't have guns.  Intelligence does matter (but not to you).

>>He hit a kid. By definition, that is "excessively fast."

No- it is not. He could have been going 15 mph and would have still hit the kid the way he popped out from behind the parked car.

dsmithy3211

@Keith @robbysalz @jamessavik He hit a kid. By definition, that is "excessively fast."

As to whether he intended to leave the scene of the accident, I might agree with you.  But this is, at best, grossly negligent.  If you unaware that you hit a kid, that's on you.  The type of car you drive is your choice.  I wouldn't go so far as to say he knew he hit the kid and purposefully drove off though.

@ruddski I'm not a parent quite yet. I'm also not a little bitch, so it's hard for me to relate to you and your comment. That being said, my 7 year old will know better than to run into the street without looking both ways... and if it does happen, God forbid, I won't go out and blame liberals. Take your girly ass back to the dump, chump.
