Why Is The Dallas Morning News Letting Robert Jeffress Turn a Debate About War into a Debate About Abortion?

Thumbnail image for pastor-jeffress-professional.jpg
The Dallas Morning News has already made clear where it stands on the question of Syria. In an editorial last week, the paper decried the "egregious act of mass murder" currently taking place there and urged the the U.S. to launch a "series of cruise missile or drone strikes on Syrian air bases and command centers" to make it stop.

Before and since, they've opened their opinion pages to arguments on both sides, to columnists who fear an ill-defined, indefinite quagmire and those who view action as a moral imperative.

This morning, the paper published a piece by First Baptist Pastor Robert Jeffress that takes neither side. Instead, Jeffress uses Syria as a springboard back into the abortion debate.

Here's how he begins:

The attempt by President Barack Obama and progressives like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to stir up our outrage against Syrian President Bashar Assad for gassing several hundred Syrian children would be more effective if the president and his supporters demonstrated the same compassion for the lives of more than a million children in our country whose lives were ended through abortions last year.

Why is genocide in Syria intolerable while infanticide in our country is not only permissible but considered a constitutional right? By what moral authority do we deny the leader of another nation his "freedom of choice" to exterminate his own people, yet empower our own citizenry to kill their children and even provide hundreds of millions of tax dollars to Planned Parenthood to carry out the executions?

The obvious answer is that early-term abortion is, legally and morally, a medical procedure. To view this as infanticide requires the belief that life begins at conception, a belief that science cannot address and which is far from universal.

Jeffress, being Jeffress, isn't interested in such nuances. There is, he writes, universal moral law handed down by God that "transcends time and culture." It bans genocide and, by extension, it bans abortion. Anyone who disagrees is a hypocrite.

There are weighty legal and moral issues to consider in the debate over what to do about Syria and how to regulate abortion, but they aren't the same issues. A theological argument that they are would be best made in a religious tract.

WHEN DO WE HEAR THE OUTRAGE ABOUT THE HUNDREDS OF CHILDREN KILLED IN CHICAGO EVERY MONTH ON OUR OWN SHORES?  WHAT ABOUT THE MUTILATIONS AND BEHEADINGS IN SOMALIA, AND OTHER AFRICAN NATIONS? WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE OVER STARVING CHILDREN AND DISEASES FROM LACK OF MOSQUITO CONTROLS AFTER DDT WAS "BANNED" FROM PRODUCTION?   WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE, DMN AND FOLKS???

SYRIA HAS BEEN KILLING CHILDREN, WOMEN, AND MEN FOR YEARS....THIS IS ABOUT OBAMA......NOT ABOUT OUTRAGE OVER DEAD CHILDREN.

WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE OF MILLIONS OF ABORTED "BABIES" IN AMERICA??? WHY DO OTHER NATIONS WOMEN COME TO THE USA TO GET ABORTIONS INSTEAD OF THEIR OWN COUNTRIES, WHICH OUTLAW SUCH BABY KILLING??

FBC Dallas is a sorry place. Not as sorry as those who use semantics to justify the killing of innocents.

He will use any platform that is rife with publicity at the moment to push his agenda... I like the DMN but I do not like this... So much for the liberal media theory

Before any person can hold any office, weather it be political or leader of a church... It should be mandatory they should have to complete... 1. One year as a waiter/waitress. To understand just how far the minimum wage goes and dependency on tips feels. 2. Work the intake desk in a ER, so they know how long ppl will really go before finally seeking help because they can't afford it. 3. A janitor in a high society place so they can feel how people treat people they deem "less" then them. 4. A hotline operator... Just because if that doesn't teach you compassion, your hopeless, Just my rants

It's smoke and mirrors.... "Hey look over here I have something shiney!" Then while they are looking away from the real subject.... Slip in your agenda! Is he a republican.... Wait why am I asking that question? I'm 99% positive he is w/o googling him to see if I'm correct!

Dallas Observer, I have a question.  Why is your "news" story about some random opinion piece and not about how we are about to jump into a war that we don't belong in without allies, Congressional or US support?  Maybe focus on something more important.  Jeffress is an easy target.  BTW, there are 1.2 million abortions a year and less than 5% are due to incest, rape or a mother's health........just saying.  Guess I'll hang around and wait for your next Wendy Davis butt kissing article.

The only thing wrong about any religion is the people who practice it...and there is something real wrong with Jeffress.

This is deplorable. His $130 million expansion of the church makes me sick and indignant. Thousands could have been clothed, educated, fed by that amount of selfish greed. Not to mention medications. Repulsive. Please let's get him out of Dallas.

In the article above it says "Before and since, they've opened their opinion pages to arguments on both sides, to columnists who fear an ill-defined, indefinite quagmire andthose who view action as a moral imperative."
That's the problem with our media right now... they consider the words above to represent "both sides" they don't interview people who say "HELL NO".... your options if you believe the media... are to be cautiously optimistic, and when the President says everything is going to be okay tonight or tomorrow... then back him. Or Burn them damn Muslims now!
There is no one saying SCREW YOU this is not our war, we should not go, you are not sending my kids, go screw yourself... you are a continuation of the warfare state that everyone hated in 2003.

@Dawn Wildfang The LAST thing we need is a bunch of office-hungry politico types clogging up the ER desks, letting puke and grime pile up in public areas, turning our hotlines into The Anthony Weiner Funtime, and fucking up all our dinner orders.

@Dawn Wildfang I would say you are correct.  I would also say that the Observer is doing the same thing here.  We don't want to talk about the real issues of Syria, let's throw an easy target and goofball under the bus (Jeffress) and then tie in our thoughts on the abortion issue.

@rbtxcat75 Because their news beat is local news -- a local story about someone going off the rails is on the beat.  National Defense Policy is not.

Please try to keep up.  This is not the site you are looking for.

@rbtxcat75 "BTW, there are 1.2 million abortions a year and less than 5% are due to incest, rape or a mother's health........just saying."

Yeah, I'm sure every woman that gets raped walks in the clinic screaming, "I was raped! Get this thing out of me!"

I see no reason a woman should have to justify having a parasite removed from her body, anyhow.

Also... is it because he tries to turn the subject from Syria to abortion a cue for you to make the subject of Syria about him?

Do you fear a liberal backlash if you yourself stand for something, instead of finding someone to rail against? It's just that we live in a 1984 style world where you face a liberal backlash if you are anti-war.

War is Peace. Carry on.

@alteredjustice @rbtxcat75 like you mean THAT ONLY RAPE VICTIMS GET ABORTIONS?  THAT ALL ABORTIONS ARE FOR RAPE OR INCEST VICTIMS?  FACT IS....99% OF US ABORTIONS ARE MERELY ELECTIVE FOR THE DESIRE OF THE WOMAN, NOT BECAUSE OF VICTIMIZATION BY CRIMINAL ACTION....JUST MOSTLY STUPIDITY IN BIRTH CONTROL.

rbtxcat75
rbtxcat75

@alteredjustice @rbtxcat75 You were once a "parasite" as well.  The issue seems to be if a baby is wanted, it's called a baby and if it's not wanted, it's a fetus or in your case, a parasite.  Weird how that works.

alteredjustice
alteredjustice

@rufuslevin You are illiterate. But yes, stupidity in birth control is caused by the idiotic right who insist on teaching abstinence-only sex ed, which has proven itself to not work at all.

Oxtail
Oxtail

@alteredjustice Allright. Whatever. Then every living organism is a parasite of something then. Hell, we are all parasites of the Earth. And the Earth is a parasite of the Sun. I am "dividng" the term based on scientific explanation.

rbtxcat75
rbtxcat75

@alteredjustice @rbtxcat75 We are definitely overpopulated right?  I mean there is no room in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska, both Dakotas, Missouri, Ohio......should I continue?  Overpopulation is a myth.  And you cast a broad brush with your "people like you" statement.  We are all human (born or unborn) and we should all respect their life.

alteredjustice
alteredjustice

@rbtxcat75 I don't see your point. This world is horribly overpopulated as it is already. You cannot kill that which has not been born. The hilarious part is that people like you are the ones who never shut up about teen pregnancy, sex ed, and anchor babies.

alteredjustice
alteredjustice

@rufuslevin "THE WOMAN"? What is this, the 1940's? In any case, the term parasite refers to leeching nourishment biologically. I would think that would be obvious, but I guess I have to explain it for those less educated.

alteredjustice
alteredjustice

@Oxtail Again, you are treating terms as mutually exclusive and dividing them based on your own arbitrary bias. I'm hardly "focused" on the term. I said it once, used it correctly, and everyone got butthurt about it.

There is literally nothing that separates a fetus from being a parasite. A parasite formed by reproduction is still a parasite.

rufuslevin
rufuslevin

@alteredjustice @Oxtail LIKE THE WOMAN DOES NOT PROVIDE HER OWN NOURISHMENT EITHER... SHE HAS TO BUY IT AT A STORE WITH MONEY THAT SOMEONE GAVE HER....SOMEONE HAD TO GROW OR PREPARE IT FOR THE STORE MARKET AS WELL...THE WOMAN IS ALSO A PARASITE BY YOUR DEFINITION

garlandpddevil
garlandpddevil

@rbtxcat75 @alteredjustice no its not there are tens of thousands of unwanted children in this country right now.  These medicaid getting food stamp eating poor fucktards are a parasite to you, you hypocrite.

Oxtail
Oxtail

@alteredjustice

Pretty sure this is a more accurate definition of what we are talking about: -Reproduction, noun

  • the production of offspring by a sexual or asexual process.

But hey, if your brain only understands a limited part of human reproduction, namely 'nourishment,'  and disregards the rest of embryology, then I could see why your so focused on the whole 'parasite' thing.

rbtxcat75
rbtxcat75

@alteredjustice @Oxtail Using your terminology, 137 "parasites" are killed every hour in the US every day (3,333 a day).  Think about that when you are eating a PB&J on your lunch hour.  And then tell me that we don't have a major problem in the US as abortions outweigh deaths due to Cancer and Heart Attack combined.  BTW, the author has completely distracted us from talking about Syria......good job Eric.

alteredjustice
alteredjustice

@Oxtail Sorry, that's not a part of the definition. That's just something you added in to exclude a fetus from the discussion. Again, arguing semantics distracts from the actual argument. Fetuses don't provide their own nourishment. The mother does, to her own detriment. Ergo, it's a parasite.

alteredjustice
alteredjustice

@rbtxcat75"an organism that lives in or on another organism (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the host's expense."

Explain how a fetus doesn't fit that definition. It has literally nothing to do with whether it's wanted or not. The terms are not mutually exclusive. Arguing until we're blue in the face about which term is being used is a rabbit trail to distract from the actual topic.

I'm of the opinion that a woman doesn't need to justify a tough decision to a random internet nerd or anybody else. That's just me.
