Dallas Police Arrest Alan Mason, Their "Person of Interest" in South Dallas' Serial Rape Case

The Dallas and Arlington Police Departments have found Alan Mason, who they're calling a "person of interest" in the serial rapist case that's been haunting the Fair Park area this summer.

Mason's arrest comes after two more victims of sexual assault came forward this week. The most recent victim to talk to police said she was assaulted at the 2700 block of Morning Avenue on July 5. And police say the last reported attack was on August 28 in the 2600 block of 2nd Avenue.

Police have been criticized for not briefing the public on the attacks in South Dallas until the eighth victim came forward this week. Up until this point, no arrests have been made.

On September 5, the Dallas PD's Neighborhood Patrol Officers got an anonymous tip that Mason "needed to get out of town because he had done something wrong," the police said in a news release. The department adds that Mason already has a Dallas County warrant for a probation violation for DWI and "outstanding traffic tickets."

At about 3 this morning, the Dallas Police Department's Metro Task Force and Deployment Unit found Mason's car in Mesquite. They found Mason at his apartment complex in Arlington. Police say he was arrested without resistance for the warrants and has been taken to Dallas Police Headquarters for questioning.

DPD completely bungled this investigation. Here are the mistakes that need to be addressed by Chief Brown - if he is brave enough to show his face in public::

1. Waited too long to get out info that there were rapes in the area! How can you wait til the 7th or 8th to put a warning out?? They would have coaught the guy earlier!

2. They accused the wrong guy! Mason is no angel but he was prematurely put out there as a person of interest. His bad reputation is now badder! ha

3. They havent even caught the guy who is the suspect now!

Can this be a race issue? No, because your Chief is black. But, if this had occurred in N Dallas - there would be calls for the job of the police chief.

With officer firings for conduct, theft etc... - we have a major problem with the DPD!

The police should have been on the horn with this after the very first rape!!!   I don't understand why the residents around Fair Park are not yelling racism!  This certainly seems like a clear cut case of treating people of color differently that white people.

It is unthinkable that a police department is biased against people of color when so many of its staff and administration ARE people of color.  They should have an equal sensitivity about rape in these neighborhoods. If I lived there, I would raise hell with the police department just like I would raise hell with the McKinney Police Department if the police here treated McKinney women  so shabbily!  Black or white has nothing to do with it.  Women's safety and psychological health on the streets are the core issues.  How would men like it if they couldn't leave their houses after dusk???? for fear of being attacked, robbed or raped.

" public on the attacks in South Dallas until the eighth victim came forward this week" actually it was 7 victims that made a report and the 8th & 9th victim came out after the news report

Also he is NOT charged as of yet with the rape/s - the case is still open

The cops had to do something.  This story was front and center in the Daily News.

I'm withholding judgement, comment, and my car payment until we can get the Facebook concensus. BTW, kudos to whoever fixed the website. Yesterday, all I was permitted to read was the pop-up-and-stay promo.

Is this the real rapist, or just a "Person of Interest" ???

I think Chief David Brown explained it quite clearly as to why the time lapse but like he said some people are not interested in the facts.

Lets see, in about 25 hours after the DPD determined that these 8 rapes, including the initial one where the victim gave no information about the rape, were the result of a single perpetrator,  the DPD identified and took the prime suspect into custody.

You also left out of the story that there is DNA evidence that links him to at least one of the rapes.

And people are dissatisfied with this?

I'd feel more like cheering if this had happened, say, 5 rapes ago.
