A Fort Worth Insurance Salesman Stole a $1 Million Settlement from a Widowed Mother of Three, Prosecutors Say

When Danny Secker died unexpectedly last January at the age of 41, he left behind a widow, three sons -- one 3 years old, the others 5-month-old twins -- along with a $1 million life insurance policy through Transamerica to help see his family through.

The timing of the life insurance policy, purchased just three months before his death, was almost uncanny, but Transamerica did its due diligence and wired payment to his widow.

She never saw a dime.

Instead, according to an indictment filed Wednesday in federal court, the money went straight into the bank account of their insurance agent, Fort Worth financial planner Caleb Deason. According to court documents, he did so by altering the routing information on the wire transfer and forging the widow's signature.

Deason is charged with one count each of wire fraud and money laundering.

The indictment doesn't go into detail about Deason's motives, saying only that he used the funds for "personal use" and bought a a 2010 Range Rover. Other public documents show that Deason was also fighting foreclosure on his half-million-dollar Fort Worth home at the time of the alleged theft.

Neither Secker nor his widow is identified in the federal indictment, but they are named in a civil case filed against Deason in Tarrant County by Transamerica.

I'm real happy that this guy will get 24 less years than the guy who got caught with meth that same night.   Justice baby, the rich look after the rich even if they are thieves.

This guy has Goldman Sucks in his future. Or maybe BofA.

On the upside, with a pretty face like that, Caleb's gonna be real popular in the pokey.

Awfully good life insurance he recommended. If I were a detective in the jurisdiction I would want to make sure there is no mopery.

No, I don't have kids. Like I said, just a thought because these things happen, and it wouldn't be the first time. No one Liked it because they don't want to think about the possibility that something like that could happen from under their noses. Didn't say it happened like that or that the guy was right for what he did, obviously he was wrong. Just saying, there could be more to the story here. If there's not, there's not, but until they get more elaborate with this story (especially since they were implicating with words like "unexpectedly" and "three months"), I can't be swayed either way to believe something didn't go terribly wrong here. But she's going to get her money at some point, case closed. None of my business. Just something to ponder about.

Do you have kids? When you had them did you increase your insurance? I know I did. Luckily Danny Secker had the foresight to do so. It's pretty insensitive to infer that this guy's wife "might" have killed him when there's no information about that anywhere. The only positive I can take from your post is that no one clicked "like".

Possibly the policy was purchased 3 months prior to his death because they had just had a set of twins?

I was cut off in traffic by someone in a Range Rover just minutes ago.

It's a wonder to me why they don't put directional signals on those expensive vehicles.

He used the funds mostly for "personal use"? In other words, the money may not have lasted long, but at least three coke dealers were really happy for a little while.

I like how he didn't pay off his mortgage but he bought a Range Rover. Epitome of Fake it til you Make it ... err steal it.

An insurance claim wasnt filed 3 months ago. The insurance policy was purchased 3 months ago.

What a money sucking corporate pig. Stealing from a widow? Pathetic.

Rule #1: If your financial planner is in foreclosure, get a new financial planner.

Of course not. Not saying that's what happened, but I'm wondering how the father "unexpectedly" passed and why an insurance claim was filed three months prior. Did the wife do it, the father? I'd need more details, but I guess it's not going to get looked into anyway so I'm sure she's going to get her money plus some.

He wired it to his own account? Not only is he an asshole, he's fucking stupid.

Disgusting! No scruples, for what? A house you couldn't afford in the first place and a car you don't need? Terrible.

Why does it seem like the widow killed him some way and the insurance salesman found out and decided she didn't deserve the money? Just a thought.

Didn't you know? Range Rover is the British phrase for douchbag. A lot of English words and phrases differ over here in the colonies.

@Gabrielle J. Dean what does it seem like your comment makes you a dumb bitch? Just a thought. At time of death, he left a 3 1/2 year old and 5 month old twins....what would the point be of killing him? What a dumbass.

@Gabrielle J. Dean  yes, so the logical thing for him to do was forge her signature until he could notify the authorities.
