DFW Airport is Overcharging 300 to 400 Drivers Per Day for Parking

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport's "new, high-tech parking control plazas," which cost $56 million and offer automated entry and exits for all visitors, were supposed to go live in late August, but the rollout was briefly pushed back because of minor technical hiccups.

"The Parking Control System is a complex installation and it's important for our customers that everything works well from Day One, so we have opted to delay the launch," DFW Airport spokesman David Magaña said in a statement on August 25.

It seems they didn't delay it quite long enough, as Bill Woster discovered after he dropped off a friend at the airport and wound up with a $108 bill on his TollTag account.

"I was shocked," he told CBS 11's Brian New. "I was like, what's going on?"

Woster, it turns out, had stopped by the airport the previous week. The shiny new system read his TollTag just fine when he was going in, but it didn't record his exit until he dropped off his friend several days later. So, of charging him for a quick in-and-out trip, he was hit with a bill for a full week of parking.

Nor is Woster alone. Magana tells CBS 11 that the problem is affecting 300 to 400 drivers per day.

"We are as apologetic as can be and we are going to fix it as soon as we can," he said.

They are offering prompt refunds to affected customers in the form of checks, which take seven to 10 business days to arrive.

I had the same thing, I disputed a $77 charge that looked like I was parking for 4 days. Did not read one of my exits. Was notified on October 29 by CC company that DFW says it is a valid charge. So, here I go again, disputing it. Still unsure why they would deny this when they know they have issues. I still have THE ticket from the plaza when I entered because it didnt read the tag.

They also love to double-charge you when you use the Airport Valet for parking.  I used to go to the NTTA to resolve; they would get it done, but with an attitude.  Now, I just give the Airport Valet a call, and they get it done (and they are apologetic, recognizing that there is a big issue with this).

For the life of me, I cannot understand why there are not more dedicated TollTag-only lanes -- the south entrance doesn't have any.

Keep it simple:  don't use your toll tag at DFW because the cost varies by parking location and time inside the airport.  Pay when you leave the airport so you know if the charge was legit or not.

It is a dirty way to make more money - whoops sorry we over charged you.  We will get your money back in a week or so.  Plus there are some people that may miss some of the smaller overcharges or give up on fighting for their money.  Extra Revenue

I bet if it was the other way around they would get things fixed a lot faster

That is only a warmup for the airlines overcharging ! Luggage fees, last minute gouging on flights.

Who is/was in charge of this project? Was there no testing done before going live? This is unacceptable and for people with autodraft attached to their toll accounts, it's got to be some sort of fraud. $56 million? For convenience? I'm guessing there were a lot of people put out of jobs, how long until that $56 million gets them back into the black?

I lived in Coppell and still rather would take Love than DFW.

So do the tag readers on the way into the airport fail just as frequently, or is this a uniquely exit-only kind of problem?

I was charged $54 upon exiting last Thursday. I had just paid for valet parking so there should have been zero charge. I have trying to talk to someone at DFW via phone or email to see if they are refunding me but i just get vmail and no return call or nothing frm email. I called and left 5 messages yesterday. Guess they are swamped or just quit answering the phone.

I remember when it was free to drop somebody at the airport, I see the day when there's a toll at the end of my driveway

Why didn't they just adopt the system the NTTA uses, it is quick, it works and there is NO STOPPING in very tight lanes behind some other driver that has never used the airport before.  The current system has brand new barriers that are already all scuffed up... I assume there are a lot of cars out there with parts of DFW attached to the side.  Why is the gate so slow?  The system needs to read the toll tag quicker and open the gate quickly.  At least 1/2 of the lanes need to be Toll Tag only.... the whole process slows down when some one stops to pay with a credit card.  Please let those of use in the modern age with toll tags zip through. And if the system was put in place to automate entry/exit, why are there still people walking around and manning the system?  I guess now DFW does not have to pay for AC/heat in their little booths.

Seven to ten days to refund their stolen money, and they call that prompt?

Imagine that...DFW dropped the ball on this one.

For the love of God just let the stupid Wright Amendment expire already so we don't have to bother with DFW unless taking an international flight. There is no bigger beating than driving to that stupid airport.

@gourleyt Call the Airport Valet directly, not DFW or the NTTA.  That has been my best recourse.

@P1Gunter FYI, people do live outside of the Dallas "loop".  And DFW is much more convenient than Love

@P1Gunter DFW Airport STILL made sure that only a limited number of gates at Love Field will be available post-repeal.... and that from now until eternity NO OTHER FLIGHTS will be allowed from any other airports in North Texas.

How consumer friendly.

@P1Gunter at least at DFW when the DART train starts, it will take you IN to the airport as opposed to near it like love

P1Gunter
P1Gunter

@Chris And those people are not my concern. I care about the people of Dallas, and I'm reading the DALLAS Observer. If you want to live in some spare ass suburb that's your right, but take the downsides with it.

P1Gunter

@WylieH It's at least progress. I will never claim it's perfect, but at least I can stop having to layover in Albuquerque every time I fly to Oregon. Or if you want really fun, the Love Field To Albuquerque to Salt Lake to San Diego to Seattle flight.....that was a blast.

DFW Airport sucks. No one likes going there, it's far from everything and it's a giant pain in the ass. Again, unless you're going international it's about the only thing worse than a Southwest Airlines flight under the Wright Amendment.

@P1Gunter @Chris well for 97% of the rest of the region that is Dallas in name only, DFW is a fine airport and serves the needs of the masses far better than love field.
