DART's Mobile Ticketing App Is Rolling Out Next Week

DART
Good news for anyone who's ever fumbled with change under a bus driver's withering glare, or frantically mashed buttons on the ticket dispenser as the train pulls away. Starting next Monday, September 16, you can avoid all that thanks to GoPass, DART's new mobile ticketing app.

It works about how you'd expect. Download the app free from Apple's App Store or the Google Play Store, register a debit or credit card and buy a pass. Before boarding, activate the pass, then disembark before the countdown timer expires. Tickets for DART, as well as the Denton County Transit Authority and The T, can be purchased in bulk and are good for up to 60 days.

The app was developed by a Danish company called Unwire, to which DART awarded a $1.5 million contract last October.

The best part about all of this is that it's advertised to the CC and no mention or signs on trains, buses, stations for thier customers.

Now what about the fukers who will see you flashing that new shiny iPhone showing off your pass, I think it's a pass to get your ass kicked and robbed. Focus on safety first them take my money.

This is great. I'm more likely to give into my impulse to hop a bus to downtown/Arts District/Uptown if I can just pay on my app in my car in the transit center parking lot. I checked the Play store and noticed the app also includes a bunch of planning stuff and also information about special offers. Now... is it just for spot ticketing or for monthly passes also? If it does monthly passes, I wonder if they'll add a feature where you can buy a 1/2 month pass on the 16th for 1/2 price :)

If the bus or train shows up in less than 30 minutes, will the vice squad ticket DART?

The app's FAQ covers this: "You are responsible for keeping your smartphone charged while riding the bus or train. You must purchase a ticket from a Ticket Vending Machine of bus farebox to start your trip if your smartphone is not working, so please plan accordingly."

I also beta tested this thing.  It's...actually pretty good.  In fact, it was surprisingly good and thought-out.  Also, they seem to have added or plan to add features that were requested by the testers...so, it seems that they're actually listening.

so can you buy a day pass in advance and wait until you need to activate it? or do you have to activate it the same day you buy it?

would dearly love for DART to do like what DC's Metro does which is allows you to buy a card and load it up with whatever amount you want. doesn't expire and you can add to it at anytime

YES YES. NO MORE BEING HARASSED FOR MONEY AND OLD TICKETS!?

It is a nice pretty feature.  I wonder how much use it will get given that 80%+, maybe 90% of riders use periodic passes.  Maybe biggest use will be during major events.  Another thing it might remove is the secondary market in passes, usually expired, that always results in some guy giving a story full of bull to driver, holding up the rest of us.

No, because it flashes a different color for a few minutes before saying active. I still use it daily after the beta gig awhile back.

So would it work if I waited until a fare inspector showed up to make the purchase?

This is gonna be fun. "Yes Mr. fare Inspector, I paid for my ticket, but the battery in my cell phone is dead right now..."

I was a tester for the app and it's reeeeally convenient! Especially if you don't use monthly passes and your train is on it's way & you don't have time to purchase a ticket. Just make sure you take a screenshot of your purchased pass in case you lose service somehow.

Google needs a map feature where it tells us where our bus is in traffic. I find myself waiting hours for a bus stuck in traffic of not even coming. I am talking abt bus 210z

I will definitely be using this for my monthly pass. Good job, DART.

I was a beta tester for this, and can say this is a very solid piece of work. DART gets double cool points for this app.

What's to keep someone from now waiting until a fare inspector boards a train before getting the cell phone out and buying the ticket?

Can I buy 2 or 3 passes for others/my family on my app? or only a pass for me?  We have a group that buys a midday pass for lunch on Fridays and I always pay.  Will i be able to have  passes on my phone for them

@Sharon_Moreanus Pretty sure there have been notifications about it on the ticket machines, all the time tables at stations, and on trains themselves?

@markzero I just checked and monthly passes (both local and regional) are available for all3 agencies (DART, DCTA, FWTA).

@markzero ha, I  have to buy a full fare 2 zone ticket at full price whether I start riding at 6 am or 9 pm, and they both expire at 3 am.  The passes really should be a 24 hr pass when you buy a full fare day pass

drummermoe
drummermoe

@pak152 You can buy a day pass and activate later on the day you want to use it. I bought one back in July that I didn't end up using and the expiration date for it was 9/24. I activated it this past week.

@MikeWestEast and major events is where this will help, no more waiting in long lines at the ticket machine when trying to get to a large event with lots of Dart riders

@UpTn DallasSocial Read your terms of service. You are responsible for keeping your cell phone charged.

@Rob Changstein Doesn't the DART Where's My Bus feature provide that info?  I rarely actually go to bus stop without verifying bus is near (Imminent on feature - within 3 minutes)

@ColinZ I am a beta tester. The screen flashes different colors if you just recently purchased the ticket and says how long it's been active for. Fare inspectors are trained to look for these colors and the timer. If you buy it after they already get on, they'll know and write you a ticket.

ChrisFromPlano

@ScottsMerkin I'm a beta tester. You can definitely buy multiple tickets and use just one phone to present to the fare inspector.

Pretty sure you dont ride dart but since I ride every day, I can tell you they're aren't any.

@ScottsMerkin @markzero I just looked on the app, and while they don't sell 14 day passes, they do sell 7 day passes. So that's pretty good of them. I imagine they may see a lot of use by people downtown for conventions for a week.
