Dallas Police Are Now Posting Prostitution Ads on Backpage.com

Categories: News

DallasPoliceBackpageDummies.jpg
Anyone who frequents the escort section of backpage.com probably already knows this. Ditto for anyone who has given much thought to how police vice units are adapting to an era in which much of the sex trade is orchestrated online. It bears mentioning nonetheless: The Dallas Police Department is posting online prostitution ads.

The ads take two forms. Some are dummies, meant to scare off would-be johns. Take this example, which was posted to backpage.com last July under the incredibly misleading headline "-->> new PERFECT brunette DOLL PETITE BODY? - 21 - 21":

The D_a(ll)_a_s (Pol) ice in an effort to fight the (vict)imization and sexual exp) loitation of women and (child)ren through (prost)itution/human (traff)icking has initiated several (under) cover operations on the Internet. Some ads will be a (warn)ing such as this one! Other ads will be real, in that the person you meet will be a real under_cover police officer! You are not anonymous and your location and (I_P) address has just been lo(gg)ed.

See also: A Tarrant County Couple Pimped Out a 15-Year-Old Girl for Four Months, the Feds Say

The other type, as the dummy ad explains, is meant to be indistinguishable from the dozens posted each day by prostitutes and/or their pimps. When the unsuspecting customer arranges a meeting, cops are waiting, handcuffs at the ready.

Between June 2012 and August 2013, those efforts resulted in the arrest of 42 men, according to statistics DPD will present to the City Council's Public Safety Committee on Monday.

The fake ads are part of "Operation Brick & Mortar," the department's initiative to crack down on the online sex trade. The name is a reference to the department's attempt to establish the same "clear and visible presence on the Internet" that they have on the street. Sort of like having a squad car parked in front of a shady massage parlor.

The strategy is remarkably successful. During one recent series of stings, the department batted 1.000, making 23 arrests on 22 ads posted. Two of the girls were underage. Overall, Brick & Mortar has resulted in 118 arrests and citations. Six of those have been for compelling prostitution, two for criminal solicitation of a minor. Six child victims have been identified or recovered.

None of which has put so much as a dent on the local sex trade. Since midnight, more than 80 escort ads have been posted to Dallas Backpage.

In the article it says that two of the girls were underage in the sting, but no one actually had sex with any girls. Seems like they threw that in there to make this seem worse.

Just my opinion - I've come across a few professional girls in my time and the ones I've known aren't being pimped out. They have accountants, lawyers, businesses, pay taxes and probably make more than most other people. I knew one who had an office on main street and her regular clients included a mayor, city council member, a few cops, teachers, a doctor...

Is it right? I don't know. Is it healthy? Probably not as a long term career and not for a lot of women, but I think as long as they stay away from drugs, pimps and prison, what's the problem and they're going to have a better chance at that by advertising on the internet and meeting clients in hotels where they are relatively safe compared to walking the streets at night or trolling bars and nightclubs.

How were two girls underage? There weren't any girls, unless if they are saying the girls posted that they are underage, which no one would do.

Most of these women ARE NOT being forced into it. And do pay taxes. And live completely normal lives, minus the fucking of random strangers for money. It's bad because society says so. Do I want to see Miley Cyrus "twerking" practically naked with her tongue out like a retarded camel on my television? No. But society says that's okay? Wake up people.

Oh, and we do not spread disease. I am tested quite regularly and use condoms EVERY time. But I appreciate the concern for my health.

Do I think the police should target pimps and underage girls in this "profession"? FUCK YES. But I do think there should be some legalization of it. Huge waste of taxpayer money to post 22 ads and get 23 arrests. Are you dumb? One ad alone will garner me tens of potentials. Not one for one.

This is a means to an end for a lot of girls. Should I work an office job making shit for money, 40+ hours a week to be struggling to pay my rent and feed my family when I can make the same amount that I made at that shitty job in a month in a couple of days doing this? Hm. AND with less aggravation too?

And for the record, I don't post on BP and am not even from this town.

I'm confused.  How does the article state "The strategy is remarkably successful." AND "Between June 2012 and August 2013, those efforts resulted in the arrest of 42 men"?

Forty two men in one year?  Meh.  Not impressed.

This is why everyone's broke let the girls make some money! Or is this an evil plot to turn every guy in Dallas gay.

I've been a lot of places and seen a lot of policing over a long period of time. Many Dallas residents have no idea how good the DPD is relative to nearly any other place in the world, including its nearby neighbors. The closest I've seen to systemic corruption and incompetence here is the ranks of the Dallas County Constables.  If you're ever accosted by one of those, call the police.

They could probably better spend their time posting ads for people wanting Tina the drug rather than Tina the girl and do the world a lot more good.

This is what the VICE squad should be doing. Not conducting stings on Uber drivers...

Legalize it.

It wouldn't end the underground trade (look at Amsterdam or Nevada) but it would be a way for the johns and the women who truly want to work in the industry (or at least want the quick money) to get together without the pimps, the human trafficking, the child abuse, and the underground slavery.

42 arrests in 14 months?  Sounds like a huge waste of money to me.

Sorry your cars got hit.  Cops do real work and overall very good for our city and society.  Bizarre that so many people have rude comments about this.  Most of these women are being forced into prostitution, which I would say is a higher priority then your car accident in which you were able to drive away no problem.

If you think legalizing prostitution is a good idea, read here:  http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/jacqui-hunt/legalising-prostitution-is-a-terrible-idea_b_2644337.html?just_reloaded=1

what a waste of money and resources. the use of underage girls is horrible and should never happen - but overall just so dumb. Who cares if people pay for sex

Very odd punctuation. Odd enough to counter their intended subterfuge. Would it not be cheaper to answer existing ads than to post one's own sting ads?

thank God the police crack down on these easy entrapment cases, instead of doing any actual detection of crimes...who wants donuts?

@chiawatha That's a really bad way to look at it.  What it really says is that this isn't much of a problem.  We should measure the effectiveness of the police by the lack of crime, not the number of arrests they make.  That's one of the Peelian Principles.

everlastingphelps

And I'll have a LOT more support for vice stuff like this when there is a legal trade that the scumbags could be taking part in. I'm all for arresting guys looking for underage girls.  I'm much less for arresting men and women getting together because OTHER scumbags exploit minors.

@primi_timpano The police post ads and advertise the fact to scare the Johns, which as a deterrent, probably is more effective that locking up the prostitutes.  The prostitutes often have no choice, and those that do generally are willing to risk arrest because they already have very poor living conditions.  The Johns are more likely to have something to lose if they are arrested, and fearing arrest, are more likely to change their behavior in response to the police presence.  That is the theory behind it at least.

right? American culture, lets go around and point the finger at everybody, sneak around like the gestapo hoping to catch something, lock em up then throw away the key, rehabilitation is for the Swedish.

@SumTingWong Be thankful holmes. The one saving grace of this city is that the police generally leave us alone and there aren't bullshit traffic stops with bullshit tickets like in the burbs.

@everlastingphelps @chiawatha

I'm not sure if I understand exactly what you mean:

Peel is attributed as writing:

The test of police efficiency is the absence of crime and disorder, not the visible evidence of police action in dealing with it.

-Are you saying this effort was effective or that it wasn't that much of a problem in the first place?

Peel's philosophy may apply in some instances, but I don't think it applies here. If the police ran a sting and arrested no one, going by Peel, the police force is extremely successful, except that it is entirely possible that they are just moving advertisements to another venue.

The problem is that there are literally hundreds of ways for prostitutes to advertise and conduct business outside of Backpage, it's just the most popular one and therefor is being targeting.

A true measure of the effectiveness of these sting operations would be to measure the number of advertisements across a large number of mediums and see if the number of prostitutes advertising services went down.

I would bet a few thousand dollars that just as many prostitutes are in operation. They just moved their ads to other papers and the police caught 42 people that were too dumb to check out another website.

All in all, this sting is just an attack on backpage, not prostitution.

@citizenreader @tonytrex1627 Or to make the guys go back to using respectable girls for sex (fake a relationship to get the azz) Or keep married men married cuz its easier/cheaper to buy an hour than have a mistress who may want to be wife one day and the drama thats bound to happen. I thought I read somewhere in early England it was acceptable to a certain degree because it provided an outlet for males that would protect the marriagable and respectable women from their lust by allowing them satiate themselves at the bordello. LOL.

@P1Gunter  I might point out that a LOT of felony arrests begin with a simple traffic stop.  Big criminals often flout traffic laws, somehow thinking they are also above the rules about stops signs and speed limit signs.  LOL...

A few years ago, I chased a car that hit mine and only stopped because the 911 operator told me to do so. Talked to a DPD officer and gave that car's license number, make and model. Few weeks later I get a letter saying that the perp's car was registered in a different county so they "sent the owner a letter". And I never heard a damn thing again. Fantastic detective work DPD.

@fltxma1982 @citizenreader @everlastingphelps and mad because they make more in a day than you do in 2 weeks? Is that their fault or yours? Maybe you could calculate what you make by day and allow them to only charge that, so that there is no jealousy.Or is that what it comes down to? A fellow man (or woman) being a better position (no pun intended) because of their choices/decisions? You have the same choices. You could sell your body for money, get a better job etc. It all boils down to choices.

fltxma1982

@citizenreader @everlastingphelps actually no. Its because there is a serious problem with a wo9man who lets say charges 200 bucks per man per day. lets say she sees 10 men a day, she just made 2k tax free in a single day. Thats where the real hatred comes in, the fact they make more in a day then most do in 2 weeks, and all untaxed. It has nothing to do with anything being gross.

A few years ago, a former coworker had this happen to her: She and her boyfriend are both black and they lived in a not-so-great neighborhood across from the highway from Northpark. Her boyfriend leaves the apartment to go to the 7-Eleven down the street. He's gone for maybe 45 minutes and she wonders what is taking him so long. She walks outside and 4 young black men all dressed in white wife beaters and plaid shorts run by. She thought that was strange. She just goes back inside. A little while later someone knocks on her door. It's the police and they are asking if she the boyfriend of "Chris". "Yes." They tell her that 4 black men just beat and robbed a Mexican man down the street. Her boyfriend happened to be at the 7-Eleven during the time of the beating/robbery, so he couldn't have been involved, but when told to go check the video from the store the police seem disinterested. They catch 2 of the real guys, and "Chris" and another black guy are arrested. One of the black officers tell her, "we couldn't find the other guys so these two will do." She says,"What?! You need to do your job." Black officer angrily responds,"You need to shut the fuck up. I can do whatever the fuck I want, nigga. I am the law, nigga!" Which, just stuns her. So, her boyfriend gets taken to jail along with another guy because DPD couldn't catch all 4 of the real criminals.

@UnicornBaconPants @ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul @SumTingWong Holmes, let me tell you a story. A few years back I was living on La Vista here in Dallas and there was a serial burglar on the loose over there. So one of my room-mates walks on to the front porch (it turns out right after a burglary report) and then walks back inside. DPD thought it was him, so they literally kicked in our front door pointed guns at us, and then ran through our house to the back door. Needless to say, they didn't find the guy in our garage. I will let you guess how DPD responded when I called and asked them to pay for my door they kicked in. Was a fun night sleeping with a couch buttressing the front door because it was torn to hell that night.
