Cops' "Person of Interest" in South Dallas Rapes is a Mild-Mannered Insurance Salesman

Categories: Crime, News

Van Dralan Dixson, the neighborhood watch volunteer now tied by DNA to four South Dallas rapes, is out of jail and on the run. Alan Mason, the silver Honda-driving, oval glasses-wearing man whom police publicly identified as a "person of interest" before the results of the DNA test came in, is not. He's still stewing in Lew Sterrett on a probation violation (he reportedly fell behind on court costs) on a DWI conviction. And he's not terribly happy about it.

"It's very unprofessional, lazy police work," Mason told CBS 11. "It's injustice to me."

Mason, assuming, as seems increasingly likely, that he is ultimately cleared of wrongdoing, has a point on that last part, which he made in jailhouse interviews with the four major local TV news stations and The Dallas Morning News.

"They don't have to call me a suspect," he told WFAA. "Just by putting my picture by that type of, you know, those crimes, I'm automatically a suspect in the public's eye. It's now like I'm guilty until I'm proven innocent. They didn't call me a suspect, no. But they put my picture up. If I'm not a suspect, why did you put my picture up like that?"

Mason, aside from the DWI conviction from 2010, has a clean criminal record. The 29-year-old is an insurance salesman with a master's degree in criminal justice. He's the father of an 8-year-old. He tells NBC 5 that his grandmother owns a gray Honda sedan but that he hasn't driven it in more than a year.

Particularly galling to Mason, according to the News, is that Police Chief David Brown tweeted his name and picture.

"Why would he do this to me?" Mason asked. "I don't deserve this. I'm very respectful to females. I have three sisters and a daughter. I don't even cuss at females. And so for him to attach that to me, it's just devastating."

Black man Guilty until he can prove he's innocent!

I have a friend who recently got a DUI.  The entire ordeal cost him about 15K and he wasn't even convicted!!!  So being behind in court costs is not surprising.

Love how the Observer went ahead and posted his picture up yet again, beside an article with him complaining about local news organizations exploiting his image. Stay classy Dallas.

What's up with these neighborhood watch people? First it was shooting unarmed teens now it's raping women?

Perry Cavender

The guy the article is about is someone who was a person of interest in the case, but isn't the suspected rapist. He didn't have anything to do with it.

good job media and DPD for making this man look like a rapist!

Don't feel too bad. He was arrested and is currently jailed for a probation violation. He's had his issues with the law. However, if they've cleared him from any/all rapes, the media needs to quit talking about him in relation to these rapes. The other suspect was just captured in Baton Rouge, but it still hasn't been confirmed if he's responsible for ALL of the rapes.

They caught the rapist, Van Dralan Dixson, today in Baton Rouge.

Guess he wasn't selling much insurance; driving grandmas car and falling behind in court costs.

There's not a media outlet in this city/metroplex that isn't guilty of pasting pictures and names of rape suspects, sexual misconduct suspects, child molestation suspects before they are even charged.

It's more than repugnant.  But it gets them their ratings.

Way to help the cause, Dallas Observer!  When I read the title and saw the pic, I immediately thought that was a picture of the suspect.  I had to read quite a ways into the article to realize it was not the suspect.  You're just doing further injustice to this innocent guy.

Next time buddy - pay your court costs. A conviction for a DWI does not make you innocent. ASk all the people killed by drunk drivers every year.

Why is the guy that did it out of jail, and the guy that didn't locked up?

ScottsMerkin

If he is no longer a person of interest or suspect, then the police need to release an official report to the news and public

The cops really jumped the gun on this poor guy, splashing his picture all over the place on top of it.

@weirdozmedia I'd want my pic posted with clearance, also- IF it were already posted with an accusation of relation to the crime.

@TexMarine

Yeah, just because of that he should be put out there for the whole world to see as a suspect of 9 rapes with no evidence.

What a dick you are. Probably not even a real Marine.

@TexMarine a shitty lawyer costs 5 grand, so therefore a good lawyer can cost 10-20 grand.  Bail is a couple thousand.  probation is 70-100 dollars a month.  Restitution can be another 50 lets see.  Fines can be another hundred.  I hope you never get caught driving drunk or get accused of doing something you didn't do by someone who has an axe to grind with you / is better connected or has more money than you do.

@whocareswhatithink

WTF? This has nothing to do with his original conviction and everything to do with Dallas Po-Po trying to save face by throwing this guy under the bus.

You just better hope it never happens to YOU.

Oh please. He deserves this because of a prior dwi? You'd be pissed off too.

@whocareswhatithink pretty sure he is innocent of rape, as it stands now. I get it, DWI is bad, but it doesnt make him a rapist

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz It's what happens to every man falsely accused of rape, all the way up to the innocent verdict.  Guilty until proven innocent, yet their accusers remain anonymous.

TexMarine

@adill74 Racist? Go fuck yourself you idiot. Nothing I said was racist. Its idiot cowards like you who throw race at everything that show just how stupid the segment of society that you live in is.  Typing in caps lets everyone know that 1) you're unhinged and 2) an idiot.  Coupled with a double post, you've proven my point.

TexMarine
TexMarine

@tdkisok You and garlandpddevil should get married, as you both live in a world of make believe.  I never said he deserved to be locked up because he was falsely accused. I said (I'll type slowly so you can comprehend) that had he paid his court fines, he'd be out. He'd be free to sue the DPD and DO.

Any day you want to check my Marine status, be my guest. It wont end well for you.

TexMarine

@garlandpddevil I can't get caught doing something that I do not do. And if I'm ever in this situation, you can bet your Garland ass that my bills will be paid. Funny I don't see you crying for everyone else who's in LS on a probation violation.

@TheCredibleHulk @whocareswhatithink pray it doesnt happen to you...dont cross anyone in dallas county..in fact keep your dealings in dallas county to a minimum...buy a dash cam to track your vehicular whereabouts....keep receipts of where you stopped - use your card so there will be a electronic trail of your comings and goings...

@doublecheese @Myrna.Minkoff-KatzThere is something to this, unfortunately. Sexual assault, domestic violence, indecency with a child, etc., are not only guilty-until-proven-innocent crimes; they're guilty-even-after-proven-innocent crimes. The only analogous crime for women might be child abuse, and I suspect false accusations are relatively rare in that case.

These crimes are just so repugnant that we as a society direct our collective outrage to the first shlub they trot out. I think these particular offenses arouse our primal, evolutionary need to band together and ostracize the offender -- to the point that this need overrides reason.

@TexMarine @JaniceA

Nobody here is suggesting he should get away without paying his dues, but what whocares is suggesting is that he deserves to have his name attached to this heinous act because of another, admittedly, criminal and stupid act.

The damaged reputation that is inevitably acquired with his association to this crime by the DPD is difficult if not impossible to get rid of and far worse than any punishment for DUI could ever be.

The DPD committed the crime, here.

TheCredibleHulk

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz @Daniel

There are, or should be, protocols for incidents such as this.

This one really stinks because it looks like this "person of interest" was trotted out purely for propaganda to take some of the heat off of the DPD about this case.

Pretty easy to profile for almost any crime committed: He is a black guy in the Dallas area - He fits the broad, general description.

ruddski
ruddski topcommenter

Why would this incident be any different than the thousands prior?
