The Ticket is Taking Over ESPN Radio

Categories: Sports

The Ticket is and has long been the undisputed king of Dallas sports radio, consistently owning its two main competitors, ESPN 103.3 and 105.3 the Fan. But The Ticket's ownership of the local market has always been figurative, in the sense that it consistently gets two or three times as many listeners as its rivals.

Now The Ticket's going to own its competition in a more literal sense. (Update: An ESPN spokeswoman clarifies that ESPN retains ownership of 103.3. This is an affiliation agreement. But you get the idea.)The Dallas Morning News reports that employees were informed in a morning meeting that the station has taken over the ESPN station.

There aren't a lot of details about the deal yet, other than that the lineups won't change for the time being. There are enough hints, though, for Observer veteran Richie Whitt to predict that 103.3 FM The Ticket is coming soon.

Here's how he put it in a blog post from last month:

The Ticket on 104.1 FM is about to be a thing of the past. Cumulus has sold the frequency, and doubtful the new owners will simply keep 1310 AM's simulcast on its station. So here's my working theory: The Ticket is positioning itself for a move to 103.3 FM. Yep, ESPN. I know for a fact that Clear Channel attempted to buy 103.3 FM earlier this year. If The Ticket hopes to buy it, and thereby move to a stronger, FM signal, it would have to dump its existing FM signal, 104.1. Again, it's only a hunch, but if The Ticket winds up on 103.3 FM and ESPN moves to 1310 AM, you heard it here first.

Still yet to be announced -- or, perhaps, decided -- is what will become of the Mavs and Rangers games, both of which are currently broadcast on ESPN. It's probably safe to assume they'll both be devoured by The Ticket, along with the rest of your radio dial.

Too bad - Randy Galloway is leaving at the end of the year (probably tied to combination) and my favorite sports guys locally are Galloway, Hitchges, Cooperstein and the Musers. All others are marginal - still dont know how the Hard Line gets by as the hosts know little about sports! Get rid of Sturm/McDowell. On ESPN, Ian Fitzsimmons is great but Landry Locker is an idiot! Not good to combine - especially if the Ticket has oversight!

"The station will retain the ESPN name and ESPN’s national programming as part of a long-term affiliation agreement."

Interesting, since ESPN is retaining ownership. In the past, any radio station with the ESPN brand had to carry Mike & Mike in the Morning. We'll have to see what they do. This takes the steam out of the Musers "major announcement" tomorrow.

Wait, there is other sports radio in Dallas other than The Ticket?

Maybe the DO will revive SportATorium?

Still needs a power boost.  Cannot pick up 1310 east of Mesquite and can pick up 103.3 only sporadically east of Seagoville...

Rangers, Cowboys, Mavs & Stars all need to go to 1080 AM or 820 AM -- now there's real signal strength!

Seriously, the little one getting a real signal and Richie Shitt getting fired from the radio..2013 you are rapidly becoming one of my favorite years!  That nice little cold front in July was good strong work too!

So glad that Matt Mosley will be history along with Galloway. And Matt, if you read this, go eat a dick.

The TICKET sucks, especially Mike Rhyner.  And you heard it here first.

so the real reason ESPN Radio fired The Hammer finally comes out. It's all Mike's fault.

I hate it during hockey season when the Hardline has to end early and the Ticket Top 10 (I enjoy hearing highlights I missed during the day) is preempted for Stars broadcast.  Now if they going to air Rangers and Mavericks, then this will be pretty much year round.

Who will call the Ranger games?

Does this mean more or less baseball talking?

Does this mean better or worse baseball talk?

Does this mean Galloway will go away?

I like the fact they are getting a better signal.  Bad part is when you travel south, you can at least get the 1310 signal past Hillsboro.  The 103.3 signal gets drowned out by a public radio station in Waco by the time you get to Hillsboro.  So there goes the audience to the south unless you listen online.  Need a satelite feed.

@JFPO Why in God's name anybody outside of metro NYC listens to Mike & Mike in the Morning is an incredible mystery to me.

Good idea, but Tone hates sports..and he'd probably put Eric in charge.

@Atticus iheartradio. It's good to about West on my sprint phone until the coverage gets spotty until you hit Georgetown.

@tgtg999 No, I didn't hear it here first.  I've heard it before.  And that person was just as big an idiot as yourself.

@CitzenKim There's nothing that makes me change the station faster than Stars hockey. I keep trying to "get it" with hockey, but it just doesn't happen for me.

@CitzenKim Maybe simulcast so when sports are on, they can leave the talk show on the other station

@primi_timpano Followill fills in on the Ticket already as a +1, great marriage in that he'll (maybe??) be more regular.

@primi_timpano Nadel, broadcasters of sports are hired by the teams, not the stations.

You need Iphong money buddy, with the Iheart readio app and Viola! You got the littlest of Tickets wherever you roam.  I can't pick em up once I get out of the car at home, way out west, so I just plug the phone into the stereo and I'm golden like a shower.

@CitzenKim @JFPO

Because we like sports radio, not morning zoo shows masquerading as a sports show.

Part of the problem is they simulcast the TV feed. Two different broadcasts are needed. They are the only team in town to do this.

@DirtyP1 @CitzenKim I guess because I am the classic "bandwagon fan", I actually enjoy watching Stars hockey when they are contenders.  But listening to regular season hockey on radio is like watching paint dry to me.  Same for regular season Rangers baseball or Mavericks radio on radio.  If I'm really interested in a regular season Mavericks, Rangers, or Stars game I'll just watch them on TV, pretty much every game is televised nowadays.

Scott, thx. I wish there would be more baseball but never again hearing Galloway is a blessing.

don't think that's accurate, I know that Sham is an employee of the broadcaster (station), not the Cowboys.

Hmmmnnn, so you watch TV in your car?
