The Mesquite Rodeo is Bringing in an Obama Clown

Tuffy Gessling didn't mean to offend anyone when he put on an Obama mask and did his thing as a rodeo clown at the Missouri State Fair. Yet enough people mistook Gessling's good intentions for some sort of race-baiting minstrel show that he wound up getting banned for life from the fair and generating a national controversy of absurd proportions.

The Mesquite Rodeo learned an important lesson from all this: The ignominy that comes from trafficking in racial stereotypes is far outweighed by the attention it gins up. Hence the rodeo's decision to bring in an Obama clown of its own. Here's today's announcement:

Come see what is causing all the ruckus as the Mesquite Rodeo 2013 season closer gets visit from a "special guest president"

You've heard about the controversy surrounding the Obama clown in Missouri. This weekend, an Obama clown is a special guest star as the Mesquite Rodeo puts on the grand finale to its 2013 season with non-stop rodeo action you will only find in the aptly named "Rodeo Capital of Texas." Though he promises to remove his hat for the prayer, people are wondering: How will an Obama clown be received in the Lone Star State?

Mesquite Arena general manager Steve Gander told Unfair Park via email that the rodeo is not simply trying to troll liberals, who have an innate and universal hatred of rodeos.

"Presidential and celebrity clowns and dummies have been in rodeo and other sports and entertainment events since before Richard Nixon," he wrote. Obama will be joined at the event by three other presidents.

That said, including the Obama clown was a conscious decision. "We are just being current and exercising our freedom of speech."

Gander promises "good clean family entertainment" and that the clown performance will be "respectful (probably more respectful than any deserve)." Friday and Saturday night only. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Why so subtle with your seething racism, Texas?  Let's see, you could do a  greedy Jew clown bit, a poor Mexican laborer clown,  And you can take the big-lipped Negro routine all the way back to the light-hearted times of Jim Crow and slavery, hatred and oppression through history. Cut that president with his uppity Columbia-Harvard-Law Review-constitutional professor background down to size, Texas. Race-baiting is hil-ar-rious family entertainment, something to be proudly celebrated, generation to generation.

The problem wasn't the clown himself. The problem was the announcer and the crowd. The announcer kept egging the crowd on, and each time, their response got bigger and bigger. That's what's wrong with America, not a simple rodeo clown.

We are all free to choose and we are all entitled to our opinion, no matter what your political leanings may be.  If you go to that that show you are literally the lowest common denominator and complete garbage.  The arena will be filled with an awesome collection of nimrods and morons!

Go ahead and go, bring the kids and collectively make yourselves dumber.  That's a scary proposition considering the lack of intelligence that brought you there in the first place!

It is completely tasteless  to make fun of any president running around a rodeo being laughed at. Adults wonder why children have no respect for adults And what kind of image does Mesquite hope to show the country.

I took my kids to the Mesquite rodeo and got them BBQ sandwiches so they could watch what they eat.

And they'll probably play "Proud to an American" without the slightest bit of remorse.

Didn't this guy just put a mask on? Wasn't it the guy on the PA that actually said whatever was said? Who - fucking - cares?

To reenact it correctly, you would need to set up triangulation of fire, most importantly a head-shot from the right-front.

Leo is correct. It's much more diverse now than it was before hurricanes and movement east from parts of Dallas.

Diane, I understand how you feel, being from northern Michigan. But I would be interested in seeing how you felt after living in Houston for a few weeks. It won't take long.

Mesquite ISD had its job fair on the dirt floor of that facility in May. That was the first time I've ever been to a public school job fair at a rodeo.

Because most people get drunk and have casual sexual encounters at halloween parties. Putting the mask on a rodeo clown is more like one step shy of burning an effigy.

No wonder Texas is ranked as the most disliked state on the poll given nationwide

Maybe they could drive a limo around and reenact the Kennedy assassination. Stay classy, Mesquite.

"Racists in Racist Town Do Something Racist... at the Rodeo!" I think this is officially a slow news day.

You do realize the rodeo this idea came from has been doing this with every president since Reagan but only now is it an issue? Bigotry has nothing to do with, freedom of expression does. If you don't like it, don't pay the money to go. Easy as that.

The same idiots doing this would be all pissed off if the same shit was done in some Muslim country.

I am so sick of the ugliness of this state and the people in it. I, too, am a native and ashamed. This is so far out of hand and it's just a fucking mob mentality now. Why don't you just start putting on the white robes again and burning crosses out in the open? Seriously. This is so far beyond a policy disagreement with the man in the White House. Ugly Texas - that's what we are now. Just flat out ugly.

This is beyond making fun of a President. This is outright bigotry and showing harm to the President. It's one thing to tell a joke - it's quite another saying you want a bull to overrun the President of the United States. This has turned into one of the ugliest states in the Union, and I'm a native Texan who's disgusted, too.

I am in mesquite right now and I think the statement is more than accurate. Leo i think you may have been living in a cave for quite a while because the "demographic" you speak of has been the same for years, or did you forget the location of the town in question?

It's a problem because people ACTUALLY want him dead.

Obama would score points if he just said "lighten up people, it's a joke." And then ask that the clown get his gigs back, to reduce the dismal employment stats. Then he can go back to the important stuff like the back nine.

@MBDG The clown bit has nothing to do with racism, you dolt.  It's political parody and it has been done to Reagan, Bush The Sr, Bush the Jr., Hillary, and I'd imagine Bill Clinton.

@killgarland so should clowns be offended that rodeo clowns are dressed up like them? You're dense.

@killgarland The left made fun of Bush every chance they had.  There was even a movie about their dream of assassinating Bush.  Grow some balls and a sense of humor.

@gypsytrade Wow!  So, no more jokes about presidents past or present?  Children have no respect because their parents raise them to have no respect, not because of a rodeo clown.  Get a life gypsy.

@gypsytrade You're absolutely right.  These lese majeste crimes need to be prosecuted.  Otherwise, how will our children ever learn to subordinate themselves to the state?

@exboyracer @Stephen146 You are from Miami, you mongoloid.  Talk about laying down with the dogs/fleas.  Enjoy your terrible state, and I'll enjoy my diverse, overly-proud, non-penis-shaped state.

@death2garland @DirtyP1 @killgarland It's hypocritical to one day call George Zimmerman a racist and then when black teens shoot or beat to death people that are white, give the excuse they were just doing it because they were bored.
