Study: Cowboys Fans, Unfazed by Years of Mediocrity, Are the Most Loyal in Sports

Congratulations, Cowboys fans. When any rational human being would have long since turned away in disgust, you've stuck by your team, undaunted by nearly two decades of unrelenting mediocrity. Your patience has finally paid off -- not with a Super Bowl victory, which is still probably too much to hope for, but with a claim to the title as America's most loyal fan base.

That's the verdict of Emory University marketing professors Mike Lewis and Manish Tripathi, who took time out of their apparently not-terribly-busy schedules to perform a statistical analysis of NFL fan bases by looking at box office revenues and controlling for variables like on-field success, the size and median income of the team's market, and other factors. Much to the chagrin of Lewis, a Steelers fan, and Tripathi, a Redskins fan, the Cowboys emerged victorious.

"What are keys to the Cowboys' ability to create a passionate and supportive fan base?" they write. "We think it's a long legacy of success, a football mad Texas culture and a state of the art stadium. Over the last three seasons (the time period used to calculate fan equity) the Cowboys have played sub .500 football but generated above capacity attendance."

Savor the moment while you can. Another disappointing season is just around the corner.

can we get that sad cowboy star on a shirt? or a hoodie? or will someone wrap their car in it?

Grew up watching the Cowboys.  I'm 52 years old and gave up on the Cowboys last year until Jerry dies.

The Rangers are in the thick of a neck and neck race for their division title. Darvish and Holland are pitching exceptional ball. Beltre is demonstrating his HoF credentials. Who are these Cowboys with such expensive parking lots and such mediocre skills?Go Rangers.

The Cowboy home wins last year were against visitors posting a 24-40 combined won/loss record for 2012.

BOOOOORRRRRINGGGGGG!

The most exciting football game in town last year was the Desoto HS playoff victory over South Lake Carroll at SMU (unless you are an aggie and went aggie-pants-crazy over J.F. Football in the Cotton Bowl).

Substitute 'delusional' for 'loyal' and I will agree. There is no reason to believe they will be any better than the same 8-8 they were last year and yet here we are with a team followed by a legion of Kool-Aid drinkers. I will watch every down (that I am awake for) and expect nothing more than a continuation of past performances.

What's wrong with supporting your team? What is your suggestion? When they do bad we should just kick them to the curb? Why is this even considered an article, all you did was comment on someone else's hard work. Kill yourself.

No we are not... We are very fickle unfortunately... Sure we watch the games & root for our team but we also lambast them every chance we get. The best fans I have encountered are the Packers fans....

Hey, at least the Cowboys are good at something.

So the Cowboys have the most "loyal" fans since they fill up the Death Star every game?  Did they ever think to look at the percentage of those fans actually paid for their ticket as opposed to having it bought by their company?  I'd go watch this trash too if somebody gave me the ticket.

What they can't take into account is that game attendance also includes fans for the opposing team. I've been to a few games where they outnumber Cowboys fans.

Nonsense.  They are the most fair weather friends out there.  I don't like Boston fans at all, but they are by far the most loyal.

Did they have to do the star like that though? #rude

Pretty sure they didn't ask Newcastle United fans their opinion

@AlphaJohnson  at some point, when it's clear that they don't give a shit about winning or improving, yes. you are allowed to move on, because fandom is a two way street. if the object of your affection starts to mail it in, what are you a fan of? the past? what might have been? loyalty is great, but at some point, you just have to move on.

if you think Jerry and crew are trying to win, and doing everything in their power to put the best team on the field, then that's great. keep cheering.

but if you are starting to think that all of these years later something isn't smelling right.

but if you are tired of an owner who makes decisions based on the character he plays in the public eye rather than what is best for the team's performance on the field.

but if you are tired of emotionally investing in a team that is lackluster at best, and watching whatever is happening in the front office happen, while Jerry tells you everything is going to work out, you'll see.

but if you would like to tell jerry that yes, i know you own the team, but it doesn't "belong" to you, and you need to take care of it...

then yes, you can stop being a fan. either that or stick around for another 20 years making this man rich and watching him treat something you love like his own, personal plaything. I for one have about had it.

@Steve Hunter The Cowboys think they play football.

@Steve Hunter Probably not, since they were doing a statistical analysis on NFL fan bases.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz If you are defining "Loyal" as "Most willing to get into a senseless bar brawl over a comment made as their team loses", then you are probably right.
