Texas' Abortion Debate Has Finally Inspired a "Choose-Your-Own Adventure" Video Game

Soon, you can help Latrice safely and legally terminate her pregnancy in Texas.
State Senator Wendy Davis' epic abortion filibuster in June inspired many things: a spike in pink Mizuno sales; imaginary jars of human excrement; an unfamiliar sense of accomplishment among Texas Democrats. And now, a video game.

The New York Daily News brings us the story of "Choice: Texas," which its developers describe as a "choose-your-own adventure store" in which players attempt to overcome the myriad obstacles set up by state regulators to successfully get an abortion in the Lone Star State.

Here's how the paper describes it:

In the interactive experience "Choice: Texas," players choose a female avatar to navigate "the struggle with geography, time, and money to obtain abortions," according to the developers behind the idea, Carly Kocurek and Allyson Whipple.

Characters in the game include 35-year-old Latrice, who is in a long-term relationship with her boyfriend but "never planned to have children." Another character is Leah, 19, who is a bartender and is trying to save money for the future.

There will be five personas in total, including a high school student not ready to be a mother, a woman in a high-risk pregnancy and a married mother in dire financial circumstances.

Sound fun? Well, it's not supposed to be.

"The game is making a point about how there's this rhetoric of choice, but it's really contingent on a lot of factors," Kocurek, a Chicago-based lecturer in video game history, told Polygon. "If you live in West Texas do you go to New Mexico to get an abortion there, or do you end up stumbling into a pregnancy crisis center that tries to terrorize you? I really want people to realize how difficult the situations facing a lot of women are. These are horrifying stories, often of middle class women with fairly good access but it gets much worse at the margins."

The game is tentatively scheduled for release in January. Kocurek and Whipple are currently a bit more than halfway through an Indiegogo campaign to raise $9,250. The game will be free, as the developers have graciously decided to forgo the massive profits they would otherwise reap.

Maybe we could have a prime time tv show where the candidate who kills the most babies gets to be Governor.

I'm totally pro-abortion, because abortion kills tens of thousands of what would otherwise be future black criminals every single year. Thanks abortion!

Gee, is this the only game where if you "fail" you end up with a beautiful baby and warm sense of completeness and wonder?

the safest place for a child should be in its mothers womb. This, just as gassing innocents in Syria, is a moral outrage.

A Quick search revels the PP abortion clinic in Lubbock still open, the two abortion clinics in El Paso still open with 'no plans for closing'.

Aren't those two cities in West Texas?

I guess I'm a little slow, but the 'game is making a point' about which middle class horror stories?

Btw, nice touch using a woman of color illustration right after the March on Washington, because we all know Dr. King would have been enthused that millions of black women co-operated with their white benefactors to free so many black children from a possible life of prejudice, oppression, and endless abortions. Certainly all your commentators of color would heartily agree. There are commenters of color on this board, right? Right?

Its just not the same without Anna writing these types of stories.

Sorry Eric you get 1/5 Vagina rating

This would be great as a kid's game, so that when they get old enough for their very own abortion, they'll already be prepared. If they can dodge the mean old anti-rights zealots before the third trimester, they'll get a bonus termination, but if not - it's a partial-birth brain scramble. The kids would love it!

Well, that was the original idea, but times have changed and history just ain't what it used to be.

Nope they  wind up with a unplanned baby that they cannot afford, so the baby is dumped into the steps of a local firestation, where they pass the baby onto the Adoption program.  There the baby; being one of thousands of  minority children now flooding the system because of the new restrictive abortion legislation is passed around from foster home to foster home waiting to be adopted, unloved and apparently unwanted .

Just touches my heart Phelps

The woman of color you speak about is Latrice...just one of the characters in the game Choice: Texas.

@ebailey75057 Unplanned?  You pull out your dirty bits and don't take precautions, that's as good as planning. (queue the rape baby narrative). If liberals really don't want all of these "thousands of  minority children now flooding the system because of the new restrictive abortion legislation" then why aren't they pushing birth control and sterilization? Because a responsible vagina is of no use to them.

@ebailey75057 So its just better to off kids and if we can convince enough people that it is indeed OK to kill humans then we can all live in healthy denial where we don't get upset about the horror. I mean, we all know what a burden filthy little poor kids running around will do to our society. None of them will grow up and make a difference in this world.

Ya know, Jonathan Swift came up with an even better idea. Solve the overpopulation of children AND hunger at the same time:

@ebailey75057 Babies don't go into foster care.  They get adopted.  There are many more prospective adoptive parents that want babies than babies up for adoption.

The foster care system is flooded with older children.  Babies fly right out the adoption agency's door.

Latrice looks pretty hot, probably gets a frequency discount at the local tissue-removal boutique.

The purple hue is a nod to Oprah, and her constant shopping struggles. And if you refer to a white woman as a woman of color, you'll be tagged as an oppressor, no snatch for you! I'm sure all the black folks who read UP would agree, if he checks in today.

Or Iowa, where libs actually pray for abortion "rights". Pretty sure God's gonna get on that real quick.

@ebailey75057 Perhaps you aren't aware that its not up to the state to educate your children on all matters?  Perhaps its people like you who have this mentality that the state is solely responsible for the instruction of a child. Do you even have children?  "Leaving them to fend for themselves" ....again...this is simple. If the parents don't do their part, then the kid deserves it.  If you cannot keep your house in order, don't expect the incompetent local, state, or federal government to do a better job.  Its as simple as telling your little ones that if they are irresponsible with their genitalia, then their life will suffer for it. I show my nieces and my daughter examples of this; from within our extended family and our local community.

So I stand by my original comment. Responsible Vagina's don't have this problem. Statists and irresponsible vagina's deserve every hardship that they project upon themselves.  You never hear responsible individuals cry about this; only the victims of failed ideology have this problem.

My parochial school educated wife didn't receive any sex education, but managed to not get pregnant until she was married; what a shock!  Her public school "educated" sister received all sorts of warnings and education on this subject, and had both of her kids young and while unmarried. Add both of my public school "educated" step-sisters to this mix as well. None of them have good lives. and their daughters will most likely repeat. None of them lived in my house when they were young, and if they had, rest assured their lives would be better.

Put it this way, we're well beyond the age of AIDS/HIV, so if you are having unprotected sex and the worst thing that happens is you get pregnant, you probably weren't headed for great things anyway.  Your FIRST thought should be to protect yourself, and if you don't have the mental capacity to think before you act, then I have no sympathy for you or those (like yourself) who see these idiots as victims.

ebailey75057
ebailey75057

TexMarine. Are you not aware that Texas doesn't educate its children about any birth control.  No my good man, they advocate "abstinence" to children in Texas.  Leaving them to fend for themselves, during a time when children have nothing but questions regarding that subject.  Never mind we waste the opp to teach them something that would help them keep from getting pregnant.  No the Pharisees of this state won't even do that much to educate the children of this state.

A "Respnsible Vagina"  really, you went there?

ebailey75057

In cases yet.  The best entity to determine this is not the state, but the mother.  Its called choice as in Pro Choice.  Worked well for almost 4 decades without an issue.

@mavdog @everlastingphelps @ebailey75057 Remember though, that foster care to adoption is just part of the system.  Babies that end up in foster care are usually the ones who were not voluntarily placed.  When a woman is voluntarily placing her baby, it is usually through a private service, and now most of them place the baby before its birth (with the biological mother choosing the parents).  That means the voluntarily placed babies never hit the foster statistics.

@ebailey75057 So where did the numbers come from?  My style is generally fair and impartial consideration of the raw data, is that an acceptable 'style'?

everlastingphelps

@ebailey75057 YOU CITED NUMBERS.

There are two choices:

1) They came from somewhere.  Tell me where they came from, because there is absolutely no context for what you posted.  Black 23% what?  23% of the children adopted?  23% of the children put up for adoption?  23% of the kids not adopted?  Your shit doesn't make any sense.

OR

2) It doesn't have any context or make any sense because you are making the shit up.

@everlastingphelps @ebailey75057 False. There's a waiting list for healthy white babies. Meanwhile, minority children or those with health or behavioral complications sit in terminal limbo.
