Ted Cruz's Dad Says Obama Wants to Make Government Your God and Kill Your Grandma

Early in Ted Cruz's campaign for the U.S. Senate, he released a campaign ad featuring an idyllic shot of him and his father walking on a sun-dappled path shaded by live oaks. His father, young Cruz explains in a voiceover, escaped torture in Cuba by fleeing to Texas, where he came to embody the American Dream that his son now hopes to protect.

The real Rafael Cruz -- the one who regaled young Ted with dinner-table tales of his time in Cuba and the one who delivered a veritable call to revolution Saturday at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa -- isn't nearly so serene.

Cruz's speech was a fiery one that began by tracing parallels between President Barack Obama and the early days of Fidel Castro ("That same man that had been talking bout 'hope' and 'change,' now he was talking about how the rich were evil, how they oppressed the poor, and about the need to redistribute the wealth."). It went on to explain that the Pilgrims survived only because they abandoned their misguided communist scheme in favor of a free enterprise system, then blasted the Superme Court's decision to remove prayer from schools. "As a result, teen pregnancy skyrocketed, promiscuity skyrocketed, vandalism skyrocketed, dropout rates of high school skyrocketed."

Which brought him to the Obama administration.

When you hear this attack on religion, it's not really an attack on religion. The fundamental basis is this: socialism requires that government becomes your God. That's why they have to destroy the concept of God. They have to destroy all loyalties except loyalty to the government. That's what's behind homosexual marriage. It's really more about the destruction of the traditional family than about exalting homosexuality because you need to destroy also loyalty to the family.

Our lives are under attack We already saw what is happening with abortion. The same thing is happening on the other end with Obamacare. Obamacare is going to destroy the elderly by denying care by even perhaps denying treatment to people who are in catastrophic sicknesses.

But Rafael wasn't done yet. He warned his audience that the Obama administration "has both their hands in your pocket. They're going to take everything you have and the money in your wallet is worth less and less and less every day, so your treasure is going to be evaporated."

He then urged them to take an oath. It sounded a lot like a call to armed revolt:

I pledge my life. I pledge my fortune. I pledge my sacred honor. to do everything I humanly can to restore this country to that shining city on the hill.

You can see where the younger Cruz gets it. Watch the father's full speech below, via The Iowa Republican:

Dad was imprisoned by Bautista for fighting with Castro. Cruz was also born in Canada, so he can't be president. Why do these wing nuts have so much trouble with facts?

I live in Texas- my entire family is right winged except two of us, and another is extreme left..... meh. Texas seems to call for a lot of extremes. Then it also calls for much collaboration.

Explains where Cruz Jr gets his daily crazy from. Traditional father figure? Good grief.

Lots of folks who lived under authoritarian rulers are a mite sensitive when they see a similar pattern of events in their new, supposedly liberty-loving countries.  Daddy Cruz sounds like many of the folks I know who came here after living under socialist regimes in central & eastern europe.

If Cruz' father would have tried coming to the U.S. from Mexico, he would have been sent back home.  I don't understand how Cruz can on the one hand, be stridently against Mexicans being allowed to enter the U.S. for all sorts of legitimate reasons, while on the other, he seems to endorse allowing Cubans to immigrate freely for any reason whatsoever.

@Tim Smathers Cruz' father fled oppression from a conservative government that was a staunch ally of the U.S.?

@roo_ster Those damn authoritarian rulers. Passing laws restricting access to medical care. Passing amendments preventing people from forming a loving, committed bond of matrimony. Banning cultivation and consumption of naturally occurring herbs.

Hate those motherfuckers, I do.

Because Cubans have a sense of entitlement that goes beyond any other immigrant. They think they are special because they fled Castro. Anyone else for any other reason is an illegal in their minds. Of course, why should they feel any different? We made it that way.

@WylieH

Rafeal Cruz fled Cuba before the Castro's won their battle and controlled Cuba, Cruz was imprisioned by Batista.

His talk regarding Obama and this supposed "attack on religion" sounds too similar to the ideology of his tormentor, Batista, rather than anything associated with the left.

and all this crap on the denial of care to the elderly? gimme a break.....what we know is the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Because Cubans are fleeing Communism is my guess. It's silly, but for some reason that still matters to conservatives.

@Montemalone @roo_ster I suggest you add Solzhenitzen's Cancer Ward to your late summer reading list for a first hand perspective  on the inner workings of authoritarian medical dystopias.

@Montemalone @roo_ster Despite (because?) their upbringing in socialist authoritarian countries, they have a better understanding of liberty than your "Free Shit Army" misunderstanding.

@roo_ster @Montemalone

yeah, the folks I know who fled both fascist authoritarian regimes and theocratic authoritarian regimes express their concern about the attacks on liberty, too. Restrictions like those being proposed based on the erroneous "Christian nation" mantra exposed by you know who. Labeling of groups such as the reference to "exalting homosexuality..to destroy the family" by you know who.

Liberty of some is easily attacked in the guise of protecting themselves from others....

@P1Gunter Yep.  So is the fact that he followed AJP away from the plate.  Of course, this is the same ump responsible for calling this "safe": http://i.imgur.com/cvZTgcg.jpg
