Trrance King Can't Stop Getting Arrested for Pretending to Be a Firefighter

When he was a kid, before his mom died during an already difficult upbringing and left him to spend his teenage years shuttling from one foster family to the next, Trrance King lived near a fire station. (That's how he spells his name, according to court records.) The men there were friendly and took the boy under their wing. The experience left King with a sense that fire stations were a place of comfort and safe harbor.

That's what King, 21, told Fox 4 in a tearful jailhouse interview earlier this year, explaining what had driven him to steal a Dallas Fire-Rescue uniform and show up at a Plano fire house pretending to be a firefighter.

He was welcomed at first. The Plano firefighters initially bought his story that he was a veteran firefighter who was thinking of relocating and invited him to share their breakfast. But his story had too many holes, and one of the men eventually called his supposed home station in Dallas and discovered that the name he had given belonged to a white guy who'd just had his stuff stolen. They called the cops, who arrested King on theft charges.

The Plano incident was neither the first nor the last time King would pretend to be a first responder. He has several Facebook profiles listing his profession as a paramedic at either the Garland Fire Department, Children's Medical Center or Baylor Hospital. Several photos show him in fire gear, grinning. In March, he posted a picture of a gold medallion along with the boast, "i got this for saving a 5-month-old baby girl from a burning car."

And then, last week, King showed up at a fire station in Denton claiming to be a paramedic. In retrospect, the firefighters probably should have noticed red flags right away ("It didn't sink in until later that Jayden Smith is Will Smith's son, so he didn't even make up a good name," Denton Battalion Chief Brian Glenn told NBC 5), but they allowed him to accompany them on a ride-along. It was only later that they discovered they were missing gear.

According to NBC 5, King was arrested on Sunday at a hospital in Irving wearing a Denton Fire Department shirt and carrying a stolen two-way radio. Glenn was rather philosophical about the alleged theft. "He was just looking for a chance to live a life that he dreamed of but didn't set his life on a course to achieve," he told the TV station.

So was King when he talked to Fox 4 back in May: "I hope to start over, but I'm going to need help. I don't know how to get it."

he has a fraudulent page about children's medical center working in the NICU. he also posts that he just got off at parkland and he's at the murphy fire department. if he had just worked as hard as he did being a fraud he could have accomplished something. it takes a lot of talent to pretend as hard as he did. his big mistake is saying the childrens bus is his ems. childrens doesn't do ems. they are a transport team.

This just makes me sad. Did anyone ever take the time to think that maybe he has no one in his life to help him fulfill his dream? When my kids entered college I was there to help them with the scholarship paperwork or the financial aid legwork and believe me that's not a easy task. I took them to look at dorms and to the college for tours and orientation etc...all the things most moms and dads do. This kid has neither. So before you judge him and make fun of him, step out of your glass bubble and ask yourself what if the same had happened to your kid and he/she had no one to guide them?

It doesn't work that way! You work hard for what you want in life, and you do it the right way! You don't just walk into a fire station with a B.S. made-up story and expect to become a firefighter! That's a slap in the face to those who worked so hard and did it the right way. Who wants a liar and a thief showing up to their house fire or medical emergency?

Maybe someone should point him in the right direction. Maybe he doesn't have what it takes, but perhaps it would be worth finding out for sure. He certainly shows the desire. Seems to me that he's just lost.

this story makes me so sad, its one thing to be a groupie, but he could have caused someone real pain for lack of training. and how did no one check him out? even as a VFF they run a check on all of us

I am saying he should be given a chance to go through whatever formal background checks and training any other firefighter goes through and possibly helped along the way. Plenty of us did stupid things at 22. Most of us had a decent and supportive family to pick us up when we stumbled and fell. This young man does not. It sounds like he has had a harder life at 22 than most of us will have in our entire life time. He deserves a second chance. If not given one, where do you think he will end up? Wouldn't you rather he gets some type of legitimate job training and becomes a productive citizen?

The kid is one vowel short of a name.

He is unstable. Do you want someone unstable, willing to commit a crime, responding to your home??

heck no. next thing you know he'll be burning down a house so he can be the hero who saved everyone, except he doesn't have any training and everyone will die including actual fire fighters. this guy probably has mixed personality disorder and needs to be in therapy big time.

well they should send him to school. they are a ton of firefighters needed fighting forest fires every year. but he should do his time for theft first.

Poor kid. It doesn't sound like he is hurting anyone. He just needs 5 guidance. Maybe these firefighters should take him under their wing and help him.

In a related story, many Dallas politicians keep pretending to care about their constituents while simultaneously pretending to have morals.

Reminds me of some college friends who spent more time figuring out how to cheat than I did on actually studying.  We made the same grade, but I ended up actually learning (the subject matter vs. their learning how best to cheat).

If this dude were to put as much energy into becoming a LEGIT ff or paramedic, he'd probably already be employed in the field by now.

@melinda_cook68 @Melinda Cook It happened to me, and I didn't steal people's stuff and repeatedly lie in a variety of media.

@Junior_91 "just lost" was the first time, maybe the second. Now he's a thief and a pathological liar.

@Kris Williams Thompson He had his second chance, and third chance, and more. He chose to repeatedly steal, to lie repeatedly and to enhance his lies to ever-wider audiences.

@Kris Williams Thompson But he is hurting someone, the real Firefighters who have to go through years of training and tons of school, only to have their gear stolen by an unstable person who goes out and pretends to be a Firefighter. What if there is a wreck and he jumps out of his POV in stolen gear and pretends he knows what he is doing? Not only could that endanger him but everyone on the scene as well because he doesn't know what he is doing. As to why they don't take him under their wing? Because, as stated before, he is unstable. That is a big enough problem with people that become Firefighters for all the wrong reasons anyway, no need to add to the problem by bringing in someone who already shows a track record of being unstable.

@wcvemail @melinda_cook68  Me as well, but everyone has different life experiences and different ways of coping. From this story I only see that he had it listed on his Facebook page and posed for some pictures, based on that I have empathy for him and as a mother I feel sorry for him. I hope he gets the help he needs.

@wcvemail @melinda_cook68 I was replying to you comment "repeatedly lie in a variety of media" when I said "From this story I only see that he had it listed on his Facebook page and posed for some pictures"...and as far as "my own kid' actually all my kids are grown except for the youngest one. They are all doing quite well thank you.  I never said I didn't believe in personal responsibility. You are making assumptions and putting words in my mouth. I said I feel sorry for him and hope he gets the help he needs. Whether or not you feel that way is your business just as it's mine to feel the way I do.

@melinda_cook68 @wcvemail "From this story I only see..." completely ignores the multiple thefts of fire uniforms resulting in multiple criminal charges, and the multiple lies to individuals. That is, YOU completely ignored those things in this story, just as you would ignore the same things about your own kid. "He's such a good son, he wouldn't do anything like that, so release him and stop picking on him."
