Man Inaugurates City's $31-Million Soccer Complex by Going Mudding, Abandoning His Truck

The soccer fields at the city's $31.4 million Elm Fork Athletic Complex, at the western terminus of Walnut Hill Lane, are still several months from being put to use. City crews have been obsessively tending the sod this summer with an eye toward keeping it "in perfect condition" for next spring's Dallas Cup.

Those caretakers must have been apoplectic when they arrived at 6 a.m. to find that, last night, some yokel had driven his red 1999 GMC pickup past the barrier fence to go mudding on the fields. This much they were able to glean by examining the tire tracks cutting through the freshly planted turf, and then by following them to the abandoned truck that had sunk into the ground.

Police arrived and deduced that the driver had erred by underestimating the wetness of the fields and overestimating the performance capabilities of the 14-year-old truck. Whatever the case, he caused $3,000 in damage which, it just so happens, is just about the value of a 1999 GMC Sierra.

Americans don't play soccer. Illegal aliens from Mexico play soccer. 31 million tax dollars spent on a playground for Mexicans here in our country in violation of our national sovereignty.

Well, after seeing the actual damage on the news this a.m. I have come to the conclusion that I should be in the turf-repair business if that was 3 grand worth of damage.

I wonder if he called Uber to come and fetch him after he got stuck?

I don't know which comes first. My disdain for people who are reckless and stupid, or my disdain for people with too much money?

Those fields will generate far more than $31million over the next decade.  Quit being so short-sighted.  Dallas Cup alone will bring in about $2million per year.

Hmmm. 31 million on a soccer complex? Dallas has way more problems that could have used that money.

Everybody calling this guy a yokel and a redneck is going to be so confused when it turns out to be a Hispanic guy that did this.

Another colossal waste of tax funds courtesy of the city of Dallas. Nice job with the truck, idiot. They will find you.

WOW great use of the our money city. I love seeing $31.4 million go to a soccer field. Helping families in need and the homeless...eh not worth the effort when you can play Soccer!

Typical "Hey, watch this" Dallas redneck. No sense of personal responsibility.

@xmantx Yes.  Toll Roads and drilling in Floodplain = bad.  Sending kids in scuba gear to kick a ball around the floodplain = awesome!

@dallasdrilling.wordpress.com Isn't it kind ridiculous to put the soccer field in the flood plain as well?  Seems to me the soccer fields in that location was a stupid idea before they added the fracking rigs to the mix.

@dallasdrilling.wordpress.com but how many well sites since they will probably use lateral drilling methods. you make it sound as if there will be 60 individual gas wells. and define giant. is that less than humongous or greater than ginormous? and don't forget the royalties that come rolling into the city. but what they hey we could have 60 enormous windmills in the same area
