ICE Shut Down a Pair of Western Stores in the Lamest Federal Raid in History

Teskey's, via Facebook
Late Wednesday morning, would-be customers of Teskey's Saddle Shop, both in Weatherford and Fort Worth, were surprised to find themselves turned away from a store that was under federal lockdown.

Locals were suitably scandalized, particularly because ICE spokesman Carl Rusnok would tell the Weathorford Democrat nothing more than that the stores were the target of "an operation in support of a criminal investigation."

So was it drugs? Tax evasion? Human trafficking? Was the small-town tack shop merely a front for a ruthless global criminal enterprise?

No, no, no, and no. Teskey's explained the situation on Facebook.

"The investigation is being done by customs agents which are a part of homeland security," they wrote. "They are investigating a violation of the law Marking of Imported Articles 19 USC 1304. There are no other violations. It's unfortunate to hear about the rumors of drugs and tax evasion which are absolutely untrue."

The U.S. law in question is the one requiring imported goods to be labeled with "Made in ____."

Owner Michael Teskey told CBS 11 that the raid was apparently initiated after investigators discovered a shipment of belts that lacked such a marking."We put a label on there that says Teskey's, Weatherford, Texas," he said. "And that's it, with a price tag on it and a bar code."

Both Teskey's locations are open for business today, federal law enforcement having concluded that the stores no longer pose a threat to global commerce.

Good ploy, obama!  Have ICE chasing mislabeled belts instead of narcoterrorist illegal aliens or Hezbollah and Hamas sleeper cells.  Sheesh...  Then you can claim that illegal entries into the USA are 'down'.  Right?

So ICE can find illegal belts at 4 ounces, but not humans at 150 lbs. Hmmmm methinks selective enforcement or grandstanding.

While I agree with everyones comments, it is a stupid law that states any product imported must carry a sticker/label stating the country of origin. I dealt with this in the manufacturing business for many years.+

Hey, this is just down the street from me and I certainly feel safer and will sleep a bit more soundly knowing the neighborhood threat to our GNP has been quashed. And the TSA detained Ted Nugent's wife today to boot! It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood..

WTF! So here is our federal government over stepping it's bounds and being "bloodied" in their abuse of power.

I'll believe this wasn't politically motivated when they start raiding hip-hop clothing stores.

Ahaaaa! Proof the increase in border agents is working. They can't find any drug mules anymore so they are after belt mules.

I agree this is so stupid.  If people want to shop there and buy a cheaper Made in Mexico products believing it’s Made in the USA, I say more power to the Teskey’s!  USA leather is so much more expensive anyway and Made in Mexico products are better because they’re less expensive.  I say we give most of Mexico and China our business because we need to save a dollar anywhere we can. Go, Teskey’s!!!!! <eyeroll and sarcasm font>

Although I can't seem to find the article at the moment, I think I remember recently that the public was told that the reason there is a problem rounding up Illegal  immigrants, was that ICE did not have the manpower to do so.. So instead lets go hassle some  American citizens that purchased some article that were not labeled properly from their origin ? REALLY? No where in this most wanted list do I see "covert label hiders" http://www.ice.gov/#most-wanted

More idiocy on a federal level...
Seems there are much more important things to look into...but I have to wonder what the back story is.  Who sicked the fed's on them?

I'm guessing a well-connected competitor is involved in this.

So they've run plum outa' things to do? No more dangerous criminals and/or illegal Mexicans in Tarrant County? Did. Not. Know. That.

I don't get it. She is busted for not marking the country of origin, e.g., Brazil, and puts on a store tag indicating Weatherford, TX, and that complies with the laws that brought a platoon of ICE officers to Weatherford?

Operations like these interdict the importation of elephant hide belts made from illegally poached endangered African elephants.

The labels lacked the all-important "made in", which confused the agents.

One reason I no longer live there. That makes three states I've left because, as much as I love vibrant diversity, they make shitty neighbors.

I still don't get it. The new label did not say "made in " anywhere. I suspect ICE was there because the belts hit the border addressed to Weatherford without labels. The new labels seem deficient. Does this place do enough business to rate a raid?

primi_timpano

I think you read it right and I read it wrong. Seems like a phone call would have worked just as well.

arstubblefield

@primi_timpano I read the article to say that the label they put on products was the deficient labeling that brought down the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing (as opposed to being the corrective measure that brought peace to the kingdom once again).  That having been said, I allow for the possibility that I read to much - or too little - into that.
